Hi All,

I really appreciate this work here. Kudos to all !!!!

My profile -
GMAT -680 (Quant-50, Verbal - 31) .
Work Experience - 4.4 years(IT)
International Experience - 17 months

Btech - 7.3/10
XII(CBSE) - 67
X(CBSE) - 80

I am planning to go for MBA. Honestly speaking , I have worked in IT for 4+ years but haven't found very exciting and so don't wont to continue.
I am planning to switch to Finance.
I am also considering MS finance option.

I found a program in SP Jain Sing/Dubai - Investment banking and wealth management. I think it is good and have applied for it but now the problem I face is how to explain my switch. I haven't done something significant to show my interest in finance. I tried CFA L-1 but couldn't study mch and flunked - I dont want to mention this in my interview.

Please help. I am really confused and don't wont to take any other specialization in that college.

Would appreciate your response.
Thanks.

First and foremost, you should get understanding of the recruitements scene after you complete the course. Getting a job in IB is extremely competitive, especially for a person with no exposure to finance/ banking. Its one thing to do the course (if you get an admit) and quite another to also land a job after completing the course. So talk to current students/ alums who have made that switch and ask them about the support you can expect from the b-school in making it happen.

Also, talking to people in the industry will help you manage your own expectations. On probing further you may realize that the long working hours (IB) or the analytical nature of the job may not appeal to you. And this is just one example.

About the admit itself, if you have not had any exposure to IB (worked on the technical side), then it definately is a challenge to convince the adcom about why you want to get into IB/ wealth management.

I am targeting Top 10 US business schools. My Q to you is,With my pathetic acads,is it even worth to think of Top 10 schools and what about educational Loans. To be honest,I cant even afford Flight Ticket charges.
Kallu mama,

You had a first class in your engineering and a brilliant performance in the CAT. So I'm sure you'll do well if you take the GMAT.

The issue isn't that. The bigger problem for you is that the top schools are very expensive. Second bottleneck is that you have very little work-ex right now, so top schools would be very tough.

Even in the best case scenario (say, you get a 100% tuition fee waiver from the top 10 schools), you'd still struggle with the rest of the funding.

You have undertaken too many certification programs. I'd suggest putting the international plans on the backburner for now and getting a few more years of work-ex.

Hopefully your financial situation would improve in 2-3 years to re-think the international MBA plans. In fact, that's about the avg work-ex that most Indian applicants have at the time of applying.

Research analysis can help you pick up many good skills about the industry, managing data, and hopefully leading small teams soon.

So hang in there and don't try to accelerate the process.

Hello Consultants,

Thanks a lot for helping aspirants like us with our doubts. Keep up the good work!

I have a few dilemma which i was hoping that you can resolve.

My Profile:
Xth - 91%
XIIth - 87%
I have done Dual Degree from IIT Delhi (B.Tech. + M.Tech.)
B.Tech. CGPA - 7.4/10
M.Tech. CGPA - 9.2/10

Work. Ex. - 18 months presently; working in a niche management consulting firm

I have not yet taken GMAT and my percentile in CAT '11 was 97 (however, I gave one mock GMAT test few months back and scored 700 without much prep.)

I am looking for an MBA from the Top 20 global B-schools for the session starting in 2013 or later. However, I am currently facing few dilemmas which I hope you can help me resolve

1. If I plan to apply for R1 of 2013 session (i.e. by end of this year), do you think I will have decent work ex. to convince the Ad Com guys? Or should I wait for the next year (i.e. for 2014 session) to apply?

2. How important is the role of a company's brand name for admission. While I am gaining some good work ex. in my present company, it is not a very reputed firm, rather a small one of ~70 employees. Should I stick to it or change to another big firm now and leverage its name once I get a work ex. of 2 yrs from there? The reason I say this is because all the people admitted to Harvard or Stanford which I have come across have had some good work ex. from companies like McKinsey, BCG, etc.

3. During my final year at IIT, I worked as Teaching Assistant and took doubt solving classes for 1st and 2nd year students. I was also paid for that. Would it qualify as a work ex. or not?

Your valuable response to these queries would be of great help.

Thanks in advance,

Best Regards.

Many B-schools have a Masters in Manamagement program. You can check those out.
Business school rankings from the Financial Times - Masters in Management 2011

On another note, you can use your MBA education better if you work for a couple of years and then get back to study. In this case you can relate to the concepts learnt in class better with situations you will have faced at work.

With 2.5 years of work experience, I would question why you want to do an accelerated MBA (more for people with around 6-7 years of WE, and for those who do not want to change their career tracks). You should be in an MBA program where you get the time to soak in the classroom and social experience at an easier pace - this will also give you a chance to explore various career tracks and find your inclination towards some of them.
Another point - If in 2.5 years, you are heading a 30 people team, then on the face of it, you are on a good career progression (& a good prospect for higher ranked programs) - maybe you should try retaking the GMAT and applying with better scores for Fall 2013 admissions - that would also get you closer to the class average WE (4-5 years) and add to your value at b-school.

About Hult- their average GMAT score is 610, and at 580, you must fall within their class range (do don't under-estimate yourself here). The best way to know about a b-school is by talking to alums/ students. I would say you must try and understand their recruitment scenario before you take a decision - talk to Hult students, you will get better clarity from them.

Hope that helps.

Maybe you could take a month long leave- Admissions committees do not look very kindly upon people who quit jobs to study for GMAT. There reasoning is that if you can not take the work load at this stage, then how would you manage the the MBA, which is far more taxing? So while you can consider a leave, quitting should not be an option.

I think its about how you set your priorities. Indians have a good support system, so that may work for you. Other than that, I guess employers are not going to differentiate against you if you are a mom, especially if you bring some great skills to the job (the MBA would help here). Moreover, the MBA degree would stay with you forever, so you should consider its long term benefit and take the plunge!

Himanshu, Your educational scores are definately on the lower side. Though they are one among the many factors that b-school consider for admissions, yet they are very much there. Another factor that could help overcome this weakness in your profile is your GMAT score - so you should try to get a great score - above the class average of 710.

Your work experience - the admissions team would definately like to see a career progression in the past 5 years and a clear idea about your post-MBA career goals. Other than this, they would want to know about the gaps in your career/ study. You have not given much information here, so its difficult for me to comment any further.

So get going with the GMAT prep and gear up to crack it!

Hello Sir,
I'm currently in the 8th semester of Engineering. I plan to take my GMAT any time in December 2012. But I'm not just aiming for an MBA abroad. I'd rather take a MS in General Management/Finance/Accounting/HR course. Also, can you please tell me if these courses as good enough as an MBA? What's the difference between these 2 degrees? I'm mainly aiming for universities in The Netherlands (or if not then UK). Most of the universities there don't ask for work experience to be eligible for the MS course. But since I've already been placed, I'll be joining my job in June 2012. The season in most European B-schools begins in September. So, I'm aiming to join in Sept 2013. By that time, I'd be having a more than 1 year work experience. With this, will I be good enough for a MS degree course? My academics are average. 89.33% (ICSE) in Xth, 83.8% (CBSE) in XIIth. But my CGPA in graduation is very poor. It's just 6.7/10 (B.Tech in Mining Engineering, NIT Raipur). Most of the extra-cirricular activities were of school level. I'm mainly aiming at Rotterdam School of Management, TiasNimbus, Nyenrode University, Maastricht University and Amsterdam Business School in The Netherlands. I may look for other universities too. And I've not yet searched anything about the universities in the UK. Please tell me about what kind of score do I need in GMAT for MS (and/or MBA) in these universities. Thanks a lot.

Someone please reply to this? I know I shouldn't repeat, but I am forced to ask since no one replied me since long 😐 Looks like they skipped me. Help please 😞

what are the benefits of pursuing mba through gmat over pursuing mba through ielts universities.

Hi everyone,

School : 12th 95% 10th 92% (both CBSE)

Thanks in advance for your replies

Hi,

I had planned to take GMAT in April this year. However, I will be travelling to Germany during that month(official visit). Is it possible that I take the test from there? Are there any requirements that I need to fulfill in order to take the test from another country? Please guide.

Thanks in advance! :)

Bibhu,

Management, accounting and HR are very different functions. Which of these are you rooting for? You need to have that clarity before you do a specialization in any of these, else you may land up in a course and subsequently with a degree that does not excite you. If you read through some old posts on this thread, you will see how much frustration that situation can lead to. (= :banghead:)

The difference between MBA and MS - MBA is typically a general management course, though you could take up a concentration/ specialization in the 2nd year. If you are studying outside India, most b-schools would expect you to have a work experience of atleast two years (though it may not be a requirement).
MS on the other hand is a specialization in a particular subject and you don't necessarily need any work experience for it.

I'm mainly aiming for universities in The Netherlands (or if not then UK).

My question to you- what is it about the Netherlands that you are so keen on it as a Master's destination?

With this, will I be good enough for a MS degree course?

In terms of years of work experience, yes. But first you have to understand why you want an MS degree? What purpose will it serve for your career?

Please tell me about what kind of score do I need in GMAT for MS (and/or MBA) in these universities. Thanks a lot.

Try to get your best! the higher the scores, the better it is.

But first, start your job, give yourself some time to learn and grow in it. Work experience will give you more understanding of what you want to do in life- HR, accounting or general management. And then you can decide if it should be an MBA or an MS.

All the Best,
