What kind of courses are you thinking about? Masters in a particular field/ MBA? Are you looking for a course in India or want to study abroad?

I am looking for MBA

john565660,

I would suggest you to get some work experience after your college. The purpose of any professional education should be to help you do better in your career.

You will get this clarity (how an MBA degree will help you in addition to the CA), only once you are in the workforce, know what you want from your career and understand if its an MBA that can bring you closer to it.

Piling up degrees without knowing how they fit into your 'bigger picture' may lead you to frustration later, if at that time you feel that these degrees are not getting you what you want.

Best,

Hi,

Can anyone tell me the min GMAT required for AIM, Phillipines, NUS, NTS.

Thanks

Have been reading thru the thread for almost an hr so as to not ask repetitive questions. But, frankly each profile is diff and i ended up skipping pages..

Good way to start - its always interesting to know that there are other people in the same boat as you!

Now, 2 years later and not so fresh and armed with experience i'm thinking of MBA instead of MS, because I want to eventually either take over my dad's business or start my own business

Another good start. While reading through the posts you must have realized that a lot of people struggle on what they should do after their undergrad. Its good that you had some clarity there.

Should i look for general MBA programs or one's designed for entrepreneurs? I am mainly looking to do my MBA abroad, not country-specific.

Starting/ expanding business will require that you have a rounded knowledge about all aspects of business - operations, marketing, finance etc. You can do an MBA where you study these subjects in the core module and then take up an entrepreneurship concentration (or specific electives that interest you) in the elective module.

How do European Business schools compare to that of US? Are the lesser known European schools good, say Norway/The Netherlands?

European v/s US schools: this is more about your preferences. In general, European MBA courses are of shorter duration compared to the ones in US. If you are certain that you would join your business after the MBA, then a one year program can make sense. However, if you want to really be part of the b-school community, then you should definately consider a two year MBA- you will get more time to explore and study at a relatively relaxed pace (& do more things). The other advantage would be the summer internship, that can help you with the job.

I am not very sure about an MBA degree from Netherelands, other than Rotterdam School of Mangament.

Thank you Very much in anticipation

Hello to all the consultants taking time out and answering people's queries here. You are doing a great job. Cheers. The reason I post is that I too along with so many other confused souls here, need your help/advice.

About me.
I am currently in my Second year in Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Delhi University pursuing B.A (Hons) Economics. I scored 70% in my First Year and was the college topper.

10th- 96.6%
12th-91.6%

Another addition (maybe) to my profile would be that I secured admission to University College London in the UK for Bsc Economics. (Rated 4th best in the world by the QS Rankings)

I have decent extra-curriculars. (Involved with an NGO, did an internship in Reliance Life last year, will probably do a couple more this year, am a good orator and writer and have numerous school-level certificates)

Now, I am preparing for CAT this year. If I get a good %ile and get into a Top 10 college, well and good. If not, then I would like you to please realistically evaluate my chances at some of the Top Pre-experience Master's programs in the UK and elsewhere. Specifically, Master's in Management at LBS, Mfin at LSE, MFE at Oxford etc.

I will give my GMAT this year in the summer vacations and expect a decent enough score (Above 700 at the very least).

What do you think is my chance of making it into one of these programs. The thing that proves to be of the greatest deterrent to me is my college, Shaheed Bhagat Singh. Although a part of DU, I realize it has almost zero brand value compared to the likes of SRCC, St. Stephen's etc. So provided I maintain a good academic record (Above 70), do you think I can get into these programs?

I am also applying to the YLP at ISB this year.

So, if you could, please take some out and assess my chances at these universities? If I have a low probability of making it, I'll probably just buck up my CAT preparations even more as the placement scene in my college is pathetic.

Thanks in advance and regards,
Shubham Agarwal.

Hi sir, this is santosh,2011 btech passed out(cse) with 65.36%.i went for cat 2011(t.i.m.e coaching). But the result was not up to my estimation ,so i decided to go for 2012 cat.So please suggest me which type of job is suitable for me to do in current year(2012 feb-2013). i mean whcih will be advantage one for me in cat-2013 interviews and call getting in good colleges.
Thanx in advance

Hi,

I had planned to take GMAT in April this year. However, I will be travelling to Germany during that month(official visit). Is it possible that I take the test from there? Are there any requirements that I need to fulfill in order to take the test from another country? Please guide.

Thanks in advance! 😃

I got to know from few of my friends that Most of the MBA Univ Abroad doesnt accept 3yr Bachelor Degree...Could you pl suggest me with my Acads and good GMAT Score will I be able to get into any of the TOP Univ in USA/UK.

Many schools accepted 15 yrs of education. Some specifically mention that they don't. But Adcoms know that Indian applicants come from an education system that offers degrees of 3, 4 and 5 yr durations.

Do a quick search on Google and you'll get many websites that list out univs that accept 3 yr degrees. Don't rely only on those sites. Once you get the names of schools, re-check on their official websites and if you still aren't convince, drop them a note to verify.

If your 4 yrs of finance exp has been strong, you'd be competitive if you target the right schools.

Hi

I am an average scorer, in a hurry to undergo best possible one year MBA program.

metric-- 85%
SSC --70%
Btech--78%
Working in Infosys from last 14 Months.
I am expecting a Gmat score of around 650
Please guide me about one year MBA courses in UK, Europe or some other countries which i recently heard about like Philippines, Singapore, China

After getting an H1B this year, I have a set plan for the next 7 years(if all goes according to plan)
Year 1 - Work for my company in the US
Year 2 - Back to India & work for a yr more
Year 3,4 - MBA in the US
Year 5,6,7 - Work in the US to repay my loan.

Query: H1B is valid for a max of 6 years. I think we need to return to India before applying for H1B again. How to do i manage to work in the US in the 7th year without having to return back to India for a yr? Kindly help. Thank you.

i am a btech, with an experience of 6years in IT field....consultants, i am in a dilemma to join teh MBA course. with my exp a 2 year MBA course would not be good for me, considering a 1 year program in India, I have figured out ISB as the only good option.

i am not able to decide on the lines of a growth in career, in a years time i would be a project manager in one of the IT companies, at this stage

at this stage thinking of mba, am i too late?....i need your help and guidance consultants....i will be 30 in may, i havent applied for mba this year, hence by the time i apply and graduate from ISB (2014) i would be 32. firstly by then my exp would be 7.5 years. with all that experience is it worth applying for an mba and what are the future prospects.

also , this would be a bit odd to ask, considering the scenario in india about marrieage and kids, people have been advising me to stay away from mba, as by the timw finish it i would be 32 and they suggest it would be to late for kids....if there are any honourable females in teh consultant group...please suggest me the right path.

Hi Consultants,
I have been reading this thread for quite some time and find it very useful and would thank all the consultants involved for their valuable contributions.
Now its my turn to request the consultants to kindly evaluate my profile.
I will be writing GMAT this May and would be applying for Fall 2013.
Please find the summary of my profile.
10th - 89% 12th - 91 % B.Tech- 72 %
Work Experience - 6.5 years in IT in the Banking Vertical in 3 IT companies. Have been delivering in the role of lead for the last 4 years .However only in the last 1.5 years worked with designation of Team Leader.I have been only on a short term onsite(for 3 months) and not on any long term onsite.
From mid of this month, working as a Senior Consultant in a Process consulting start up that is focused on Transportation vertical (non IT)(Also start up is founded by my relative)
Have done some Technical certifications.Planning to take up PMP certification at the earliest.
Have received appreciation/awards for the work done in every organization.
Not much in Extra Curricular activities/NGO related work on social causes.
Request to kindly provide guidance on these mentioned points.
1. At the time of applying in Oct 2012,I would have a total of 7.2 years (6.5 years in IT , last 9 months in non IT)& at the time of joining B school in Fall 2013, I would have a total of 8 years (6.5 years in IT, last 1.5 years in non IT).
Given my major work ex is in IT, would I still be tagged as Indian IT Male??
2.I am interested mainly in 2 year MBA, as post MBA ,I am planning for career change and get into Strategy Consulting. Also is 1 year MBA advisable for career change?
3. As the start up is in the initial stages and I work only for the founder (who is also my relative),should I get a recommendation only from the client and not from founder??
4.I am planning to get involved in NGO related work on social causes but I fear is it too late??
5.What are my chances at the Top 15 US B Schools assuming I get a GMAT score of 750+??
Thanks a lot for your valuable time and eagerly awaiting the feedback.

Your marital status will NOT come in way of your doing the MBA (unless your spouse has a problem with it ). Infact most B-schools have Partner Clubs which richly enhance the experience of the partner if he/she decides to accompany the other partner. Ofcourse, this depends on how involved a person is willing to get in the club.

28 years- that does not make you too old for an MBA. However, you may base your search for the right school on certain criteria, like a two year MBA v/s one year MBA or an Executive MBA. You can consider b-schools all over the world, including in the US. What the admissions committee will really need convincing about is: what are your career goals, how does the MBA fit into that plan and why now. A lot of soul- searching will help you answer these questions.

Its always beneficial to score above 700 in GMAT - you can look at the average GMAT scores released by b-schools on the class profile pages of their websites or on b-school rankings published bu Business Week and US News.

Regarding courses in Finance and IT - you can take electives in these subjects. I think, your search can get more targeted for courses once you have pin-pointed your career goals and understand what it will take to get there.

Hello Sir,
I'm currently in the 8th semester of Engineering. I plan to take my GMAT any time in December 2012. But I'm not just aiming for an MBA abroad. I'd rather take a MS in General Management/Finance/Accounting/HR course. Also, can you please tell me if these courses as good enough as an MBA? What's the difference between these 2 degrees? I'm mainly aiming for universities in The Netherlands (or if not then UK). Most of the universities there don't ask for work experience to be eligible for the MS course. But since I've already been placed, I'll be joining my job in June 2012. The season in most European B-schools begins in September. So, I'm aiming to join in Sept 2013. By that time, I'd be having a more than 1 year work experience. With this, will I be good enough for a MS degree course? My academics are average. 89.33% (ICSE) in Xth, 83.8% (CBSE) in XIIth. But my CGPA in graduation is very poor. It's just 6.7/10 (B.Tech in Mining Engineering, NIT Raipur). Most of the extra-cirricular activities were of school level. I'm mainly aiming at Rotterdam School of Management, TiasNimbus, Nyenrode University, Maastricht University and Amsterdam Business School in The Netherlands. I may look for other universities too. And I've not yet searched anything about the universities in the UK. Please tell me about what kind of score do I need in GMAT for MS (and/or MBA) in these universities. Thanks a lot.

i am in a dilemma to join teh MBA course. with my exp a 2 year MBA course would not be good for me, considering a 1 year program in India, I have figured out ISB as the only good option.

Its always a good strategy to spread yourself further - you can also consider the PGPX/ EPGP program by IIMs, which are meant for people with 5+ years of work experience.

i am not able to decide on the lines of a growth in career, in a years time i would be a project manager in one of the IT companies, at this stage

You would have to think hard about this- what is it you want from your career 4-5 years from now? Do you want to stay in the same industy, in a different fuction? Or change industry? Or start something of your own? Are you seeking a much larger jump in responsibilities within IT? This clarity is very important before you get into an MBA program- for one, you can give better direction to yourself in the one/two years you are there.

at this stage thinking of mba, am i too late?....i need your help and guidance consultants....i will be 30 in may, i havent applied for mba this year, hence by the time i apply and graduate from ISB (2014) i would be 32. firstly by then my exp would be 7.5 years. with all that experience is it worth applying for an mba and what are the future prospects.

People in your age bracket definately go back to b-school, so you are not late. However, B-schools would expect you to have very clear career goals and good reasons for the need of an MBA at this point in your career. An MBA would surely open up possibilities and new paths for you, which you may not get exposed to in your present career. Other than that, the network you create would be valuable for a lifetime.

also , this would be a bit odd to ask, considering the scenario in india about marrieage and kids, people have been advising me to stay away from mba, as by the timw finish it i would be 32 and they suggest it would be to late for kids....if there are any honourable females in teh consultant group...please suggest me the right path.

You have hit the right door here (for the female bit!!) I believe that if you think an MBA will help you a great deal in your career, then you must do it, rather than regret not doing it a few years later. At this time, while you have some flexibility in your life (small/ no kids), make the best use of it. Besides, you can think of your spouse as a partner in the MBA education process. If your family is staying with you, they would get the unique opportunity to interact with families of other students, which is a tremendous exposure for them as well.

Hope that helps.
