Practice dense RC passages i.e. short and tough ones.

IMHO, if you are not good at RCs, then at this moment you should avoid it. If you will look into the past papers, you would realize that RCs are giving way to critical reasoning. Now neither is easy but CR has a structure to it. There were 17 questions from CR alone last time. That is 70% more than the sectional cut off.

Apart from that work on Vocab, it had 4 questions, making it a total of 21 EXCLUDING RCs.

So as you can see, (it's a suggestion, not an implication, XAT is full of surprises) you can get a 100%ile in English even if you do not do any RC at all. Best of Luck .

Last year RCs in XAT were one paragraph types. They just ask anything from an RC (generally inferential questions). I would suggest try last year papers of XAT for just anything related to XAT papers. Why I say this is because we are all in CAT mode and XAT questions are a little different, you have to be in practise and please use the official XAT answer key and then try to understand why this is the answer not the other, try to understand the mind of the paper setter. Don't take XAT lightly I know many people who cracked CAT but got screwed in XAT royally. Respect XAT give it time and believe me you will crack it. For XAT my personal experience stategizing and practise are of utmost importance.

My strategy last year:
LR has been generally toughest section of XAT. I planned to clear cutoff in LR and QA(time consuming) so select the questions carefully. Then I kept this room to do the easy parts of the paper, whatever they are (some years RC was easy, some years decision making, some years LR puzzles are also easy). This is to maximise your percentile because the BM call is at a relatively higher percentile.

30-31 right answers last year would have sailed you through. Genrally the cutoff in XAT is pretty low, so one has to keep the QA attracted engineer's mind in a control and try to optimise the score.

About essay:

I think it doesn't have any influence on the call(whatever info I have from seniors), but during the interview they ask you questions from it, so please come back home after exam and briefly write the points which you hav written in the essay(as till the interview you will forget). For essay preparation follow a structure easily avaliable on coaching institute websites.

Points, structure and and using the space properly in time is what is important. Practise a few essays if possible in the limited space and time (this is for people who are through with their preparation)

hi puys..m gonna ask a very stupid question..spare me for tht.....
just wanted to know what is the mark given to each question in XAT...I mean is each question worth 1 mark or there is a kind of differential marking...

last yr XAT had 101 questions..this means the paper was of 101 marks..Am I correct?.......

P.S....I am aware of the -ve marks scheme... (1/5 th for the first 6 and 1/4th from there on..)...

Adding to what federer has said

for AR/DM score of 8+ had given u 90+ (i had score varying from 8.75 to 10 and i got a percentile of 92)
but one caution here is that,last year the LR part is tough ,hence lower cut offs
the year before that(XAT 2009)the LR part is very easy...so plan accordingly

QA i scored 4.75 and percentile of 72....so as federer said it should have been around 9.5 to 10
my friend who scored around 13 got 99 percentile in QA

here the cut offs vary from 92 to 95 and hence those who are aiming for BM should make sure they give enough time for QA in exam

VA ...last year i think a score of 10 to 11 would have given 90+ percentile
as i got 16.75 and percentile of 99.81...

this is also one very imp section as cutoffs for PMIR is sligthly more for VA when compared to BM

hence the order of imp in exam

VA (for both PMIR & BM)
QA(for BM)
LR(make a decent attempt here)

I observed a trend on AR.....

XAT 2006 contained Missing data questions...

XAT 2007 continued with a similar trend ....

XAT 2008 quest conitinued few missing data sets and DM....

XAT 2009 had similar pattern for AR.....

If people remember, the mocks conducted by TIME and CL were exact replica of XAT 2009 ....

XAT 2010:No missing data, complex data containing loads of variables...

This year also one can expect similar pattern in mocks and may be in XAT 2011....

I took XAT last year....I scored 98 in AR. ..with overall 80 odd....rest of the sections are not worth while mentioning..I attempted around 16 ques..(3 in DM...)....


What i am stressing upon is one learn a lot from trend analysis and structure his preparation...

can anyone help in doing similar trend analysis in ENG and QA....We can however never predict wht will come in actual exam...

But atleast this well help some in tuning the prep.....
