Can anyone help me regardign essay writing/????

its taking a toll on me....like i went thru the papers of previous yrs...But there are some abstract topics which is not understandable..And soo many things are there....i mean i really cant understand on which portions shud i give importance for esssay writings???i mean yeah ok i can write well but if i feel fish out of the water in that case....if i dont know about the subject matter in that case?????

and one mroe thing is how this ESSAY Writing matters.....i mean if i score well in other topics...i mean QA VA and LR but a very low score in ESSAY....in that case will i get a call from XLRI or XIMB???or other institutes????just let me know that../

The essay will play no part in your getting a call from XLRI, XIMB or any other institute. It is your XAT score (and i repeat your XAT score only) and the corresponding cutoffs decided by each B-school that will determine whether you get a call for GD/PI or not.
The essay will come into play only during the interviews in the GD/PI phase. The interviewers at XL/XIMB will have a copy of your essay during your interview and they may or may not question you on your views presented in the essay. Also, the essay is not corrected and no direct score is given to the essay. It is upto the interviewers whether they wish to question you on what you have written or not. Having said that, it is advisable to give considerable thought while writing your essay so that you can defend your point if questioned in the interview.

So essay has a lot of value but during the PI phase.

OK..i ll try and give a little bit on how i think XAT should be tackled and I hope it can help some of you to do that extra bit on the day thats not very far :).

Its always good to read success stories and get inspired by them and at the same time its good to know failure(naa...Not success yet:lookround:) stories so as u can avoid the same mistakes....

here is my story and mistakes i did last year while writing XAT which i wish no one repeats(including me)

so i would take you through my 2 hrs on XAT 2010 and u can know what mistakes u can avoid(i already wrote about it long time back....but writing for the newbies who might be taking XAT for the first time like i did last year)

Strategy plans before XAT:

Having observed that VA cut offs would be imp factor for the calls(even if by chance we miss QA or LR cutoffs...still will be able to manage PMIR call with good verbal score) and also the humiliation faced in JMET 09..where almost all my RC answers are wrong as i did this section last and under pressure, decided to do VA at first

i never do LR section last so thought of doing VA-LR-QA with equal timing to each

since QA and DI come together and for the fact i never cleared QA cut off in any mocks in 2009,decided to play it safe by doing DI (going with a predetermined mind set is a sin, u will soon know why...)

the 2 hrs of XAT
..........................

started confidently with VA and it looked like a breeze and was having a feel good factor...done around 23 questions in 40 mins(didn't read the remaining 7 questions as i want to stick to time limit..)so far so good

then started LR section

MISTAKES:
.................
selected the 3qs pupies set (i have predecided to do 2 LR sets and then only attempt DM as no one can be 100% confident on DM questions)

i say selecting this question is a mistake because instead of selecting 5q sets i chose a set with 3 qs and did 3 of them in 10 mins

then i had done the biggest mistake of my exam of choosing the XL Band set(again it contains only 3 questions nd the prvious puppies set was atleast easy) and did this set for almost 20 mins()...so now almost 30 mins into LR section ...i realised that DM questions and 1 single LR question were infact easy ...so since my attempts are low ..took another 22 mins and completed them....final attempts read 16 questions in 52 mins

now entered the QA section(supposedly my weakest section) with just 28 mins left

did not scan through the paper but jumped at the first DI set (rose and cornations..as i predecided to do DI first)
15 mins into it and i am not able to get accurate answers(those who had seen 2010 paper know..what a pain that set is)
by this time i can see my hand literally shivering(i now know ,what pressure can do to a man)
unable to leave the set ..i answered 2 questions of the set with half calculations(both are wrong)

then in the last 15 mins frantically done another 9 questions out of which some 6 are correct....total attempts in quant read as 11 in 28 mins

immediately after coming out of exam hall i know tht i missed BM and might have a remote chance of PMIR call...but results said otherwise

VA ....16.76 99.81
LR .....8.75--10 91.89
QA ....4.5......71.99

OA 29 to 31.5 98.46%

Learnings from my exam:
do not go with any preconcieved notions..be ready to change the strategy during the exam

scan the paper before selecting questions to attempt(XAT provided ample questions)

read through the quant questions even though they might look intimidating,as they might turn out to be sitters...this i observed now while scanning through previous papers)

spend time in LR where u can get max returns(unless 3 questions sets look very easy, its better to go for sets with more questions)

and finally remember all is not over till it is over

I am not too sure abt this but what you can try to do is go to any centre in dehradun as today they will be issuing provisional hall ticket....Try and manage with them and get a new provisional hall ticket issued....Hope it helps

yaar yeh Gurgaon ka centre Dronacharya Engineering College kyun rakhte hain. That college is not even in Gurgaon. Why dont they understand its too too far. Not only that the road is in bad state and not safe either. Also there is no public transportation available to that college. What the hell is wrong with the Admissions deptt. Now people who dont have a conveyance will have to spend another 1000 bucks for taxi fare..totally unreasonable. BS!

Bhailog thanks for all your help and support ....finally got my admit card(provisional) ......center is Army Public School ,Dhaula Kuan,New Delhi ....i was really tensed that i wont be able to take XAT2011 ,no helpline no. was working ,no reply to mails( sent 12 of all to them but no reply) ....now u can imagine my state of my mind ....just one thing worked ALLL IZZZ WELLLL ....for all of you who are still unable to download their admit card do one thing :

get hold of your friend who have got their admit cards ,report to their centers as soon as possible ....today or tomorrow ...finally on reaching their centers tell the concerned people that you are unable to get the printout of admit card (they are willing to help...trust me)........they will issue you a new provisional admit card.

Center is not the problem ...you can go to any center ......and get your provisional admit card.
Take along with you the required documents :
1). 3 photographs
2). XAT pay in slip (Axis Bank)...or by whatever other means you have paid the fees
3). ID proof (Driving License, PAN card...etc)

The same happened with me.
Made multiple payments (3 times).But when it was not going through anyways.
I called GIM and go tto know that there is osme problem with ICICI payment gateway.
they asked to call the banker and get the authorisation code for multiple payments and it to them through Email or phone.They will reverse the payment.
Include your XAT ID with every communication with GIM.

First time, I got connected with GIM after multiple attempts, their EPABX sytem is quite annoying, which disconnects the calls everytime the desired extention is busy.
Second time again the same case..!! I must have spend 20 Call credits(both first and second time) reaching them.
Finally could not connect second time, I mailed the details to them.Still awaiting response from them.

Hey ppl,

Here's wishing you all a very happy new year and all the best for XAT. A few pointers regarding XAT:-

1) Never loose ur calm......and by never I mean NEVER. Even if you have been stuck in a question for quiet a long time, remember XAT is more about accuracy than no. of attempts. Keep ur focus and move ahead.
2) Do not make random guesses. With a five option and progressive negative marking pattern in XAT it is easy to screw up.
3) Please pay attention to the essay given and take it SERIOUSLY (speaking by personal experience). I know one has been exhausted by 2 hours of the test and therefore the essay is generally ignored. They do have ur essay in front of them during ur GD/PI's so keep that thing in mind!
4) I know a lot of random keys wud be floated after the exam but trust me.........wait for the results and u might be in for a pleasant surprise. I was a borderline case in QA according to most of the keys including TIME and CL but landed up with a 96.xx in QA and a 99.68 overall with both BM & IR calls. Keep ur faith ppl.

just to add be v careful with the instructions.. it hs been said many times before, i would like to re-iterate read the instructions very carefully!
And stay calm and give t your best!
Lastly, its just another exam, dnt treat it as the biggest thing in your life as it isnt and its best u dnt mke it 1.!
