Cultivating Knowledge: VJIM Students Explore Organic Farming and Rural Development at DRNVJIRD

Bridging Classrooms with Rural India

In the academic year 2024-25, the Vignana Jyothi Institute of Management (VJIM) embarked on a journey to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world practice. The institute launched its transformative Rural Immersion Program, offering students an invaluable opportunity to connect with rural India. Dr. Amanat Husain, Assistant Professor in Agribusiness at VJIM, is the faculty coordinator for the rural immersion program which is aimed to provide students with firsthand exposure to the agricultural landscape and its challenges.

The program received strong support from VJIM’s leadership team, including Director Prof. (Dr.) Bharat Bhushan Singh, Dean Dr. D. Ravinath, and Program Head Dr. Padmaja Nalluri. Their participation reflected the institute’s commitment to offering an enriching, holistic learning experience.

Immersion into Rural Realities

Students from the 31st and 32nd batches—a total of 510 participants—joined the program. Among them, 413 students visited rural areas to engage directly with farming communities. Their mission was clear: understand rural life, explore agricultural practices, and analyze the socio-economic challenges faced by farmers.

Through these interactions, students gained a practical understanding of rural India and learned how management education can contribute to sustainable development.

Hands-On Learning at DRNVJIRD

The program began with educational visits to farm sites affiliated with the Dr. D. Rama Naidu Vignana Jyothi Institute of Rural Development (DRNVJIRD). These field tours gave students an up-close look at farm operations and the complexities of rural livelihoods.

At the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), established by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), students explored how these centres empower farmers through training, demonstrations, and innovative agricultural technologies. They also discovered the role of KVKs in conducting Kisan Melas and outreach programs that bring scientific farming practices to villages.

Building Skills Beyond the Classroom

Alongside agricultural learning, students took part in management and communication games. These activities encouraged teamwork, leadership, and creative problem-solving—skills essential for future managers addressing rural challenges.

To promote collaboration, VJIM faculty organized team-building exercises that enhanced communication and decision-making abilities. Students learned to think critically and act confidently in real-world situations.

Celebrating Culture and Community

A vibrant cultural night became one of the most memorable parts of the program. Students performed rural-themed songs and dances, celebrating India’s rich heritage. The evening ended with a campfire, creating a sense of unity and shared purpose among students and faculty members.

Research, Reflection, and Field Insights

During village surveys, students collected data on demographics, farming practices, market access, and rural challenges. This research helped them understand ground realities and assess how effective policies or management strategies could improve livelihoods.

These experiences encouraged analytical thinking and inspired students to propose practical solutions for rural development.

Exploring Nature and Sustainability

To strengthen their bond with nature, students trekked through the Narsapur Forest. The experience deepened their appreciation for environmental conservation and its connection to sustainable agriculture. It also reminded them that protecting ecosystems is vital for the long-term success of rural communities.

Shaping Future-Ready Rural Leaders

Throughout the VJIM Rural Immersion Program, students gained insights into agricultural systems, rural economies, and sustainability practices. They also built emotional intelligence and leadership skills—qualities essential for anyone aspiring to make an impact in rural India.

By the end of the program, students returned with a broader worldview, ready to apply their knowledge in meaningful ways.

A Transformative Learning Experience

The VJIM Rural Immersion Program achieved its goal of blending academic knowledge with real-life application. Guided by Dr. Amanat Husain and supported by dedicated faculty, it continues to shape future leaders committed to driving positive change in rural India.

Through initiatives like this, VJIM Hyderabad reinforces its mission of nurturing socially responsible managers who understand the importance of sustainability and community-driven growth.
