 XL interview (24.02.2019)
Venue: Jamshedpur
WAT and GD topic:

Should paper currency be replaced with electronic money?

The GD was civilised with everyone in favor of the topic. I made some few good points.

Interview:
3 panelists, p-1 was maybe 55+ , p-2 and p-3 were in their mid 30s.
I was the last to be interviewed.

A junior from xyz company  and from IIT BHU had just given her interview.
P-3: You have close to 4 years of workex good.
P-1: So what do you do?
Me: told about journey in xyz company .
P-1: Oh you are from xyz . You and the lady who just had  interview do you know each other?

Me: I met her for the first time in waiting room, she is in fact from my college. It's a small world.

P-1: Indeed. So xxx are you married?
Me: No sir.
P-1: Do you plan to get married?
Me: My mother keeps me nudging but I am not planning to get married for at least 3-4 years.
P-1: so you want to complete your MBA before marriage right?
Me: Yes that and I want to have a house and save some money before I get married.
P-1: why do you need  to have money in your bank to get maried? Maybe your wife will bring money also.
Me: I plan to have some money just to deal in case of any emergency. Moreover my current salary is more than enough for me to live in Jamshedpur but I need to have some savings before I plan to have a family here. My parents are also old so I save money just for any medical emergencies.
P-1: How much money do you think is sufficient?
Me: I try to maintain a balance of 6 months of salary.
P-3: but you have worked so long, surely savings is not an issue for you?
Me: I sent the money home to build a house for my parents. I have invested in mutual funds and share market too.
P-1 to P-2: take some tips from him!

P-1:Good. So what does your name mean?
Me: It means someone who is good in language.
P-1: How many languages do you know?
Me: I was born and brought up in nepal. My primary education was in nepaleese.
P-2: What were you doing in Nepal.
Me: told my father was working in Nepali steel company.
P-1: And what other language?
Me: I moved to Kolkata in 2004 and stayed there for  10 years, so I know Bengali too.
P-1: Bangla bujhte paaro( can you understand Bangla)
Me: Hain sir aami Bangla bujhte paari(Yes sir I understand Bengali)
P-1 : What else you know?
Me: I know oriya. It is my mother tongue.
P-1: Asks question in oriya.
Me: Answers.
P-1: Apart from that I know English and Hindi . I scored 99 in Sanskrit in class X. But I am out of touch, with one month of practice I can speak in Sanskrit as well.

P-1 recites a shloka in sanskt asks me to decipher. I look visibly perplexed and try to decipher. He then gives me hints and tells me the meaning.

P-1: do you remember any shloka in Sanskrit ? Any one of your favorite?
Take your time.

Me: "Namanti gunino Jana .... "

P-1 corrects me with the last verse and asks me the meaning.

P-1 then asks do humble people really get respect.
Me : humility is the surest sign of intelligence, sir
P-1: I have talked the most in the interview. Does it make me the most intelligent and the other two lesser than me
Me: depends on the context sir. In popular culture it is said that the person who speaks the least is the most intelligent but to speak extensively you need knowledge.
P-1: So you are an expert in maths.
At this moment P-3 who had asked a lot of maths to candidates earlier took out his pen and was about to ask question.
Me: I was good in maths.
P-1: what do you mean you were good in maths. Does that mean that you are not good in maths now?
Me: No sir I am good at maths but it has become a bit rusty.
P-3 looks disappointed.
P-2 then quips in.
P-2: You did mine planning. Tell me a mine planning institute.
Me: CMPDI
P-2: Ok. Tell me how many types of underground mining methods are there.
Me: In coal mining bord and pillar and longwall. In metal..
P-2 cuts me short: only two methods of underground coal mining.
Me : yes sir
P-2 : there are five.
Me: the two methods bis what comes to my mind right now sir.
P-2: underground continuous mining?
Me: Yes sir, I remember.
P-2: which is the largest open cast mines in India?
Me: Gevra coal mines , SECL
P-2: ok there was some new fund to be paid by mining industry?
Me: Yes sir under PMKKY a new fund called the district mineral fund was introduced. It was seen that the vicinities around mines were severely underdeveloped with  all the money sent to state govt with money being used elsewhere.
P-2: what is the rate of DMF?
Me: I am not sure but I think it is 10% of royalty.

P-2: No. Tell me you have DMF and you also do CSR which is 2% . How is it sustainable.

Me: sir DMF is on royalty. CSR is on profit.

P-2: Tell me the challenges faced by mining industry.

Me: 1 would be regulatory challenge. Leases are up for auction.

P-2: how is regulation challenge? You have to follow the rules right.

Me: Yes sir . It is changes in regulations

P-2: how is the changes in regulation specific to mining industry. Do you know NASSCOM?

Me : Yes sir

P-2: the chairman of NASSCOM can say the same thing.

Me: Sir, the regulations have become stringent now. Earlier rapacious unscientific mining used to be done. There are pits in Forest area which is un diverted. The rules penalise us for the mistakes done in the past. As a young mining engineer who is in charge of a mines, it is not right to be penalised for the past mistakes. I have to rectify the old mistakes and ensure that rules are followed.

P-2 nods occasionally but doesn't sound convinced. He asks me what other challenges are there.

Me: Skill related challenges are there. Young engineers don't want to work in mines any more.

P-2 : Why? I think people from ISM dhanbad are still Gaga over mining.

Me: they join yes but they leave mines within a year to pursue either MBA or some analytics job in Bangalore, gurgaon.

P-2: MBA like you?
P-3 to P-2 : He has done enough yaar. 4 year he has done mining.
P2: what other challenge do you envisage.
Me: technological challenge. Our technology is far inferior to Australia.
P-2: you can always import the technology like aircraft industry has done. Why is it not being done?
Me: we have to look in terms of socio political context also. We have to employ the people who have been displaced. Moreover we have to overhaul the entire mine design based on New technology. It needs to be gradual.
P-2: In Australia they have these big machines. Skill can also be improved.
Me: yes sir there are these 500 ton dumpers which are actually driven by girls. I don't imagine that here.

I realise I messed up here as everyone jumps in.
P-2 : You are saying girls can't drive dumpers in India.
Me: no sir I wanted to say as of now we don't have skilled men in our mines who can operate such heavy machines. With proper training people from any gender can ride those.
P-2: then training should be imparted.
Me : yes sir.

P-1: ok what's your XAT percentile?
Me: 99.7
P-1: O baba re. You must have other calls too.
Me: only L.
P-3: SP Jain ?
Me: only applied to A,B,C and XL sir. I want to study in the top 5 B school only.
P-3: You haven't filled in HR.
Me: No sir. I was not interested in HRM. I want a general profile to diversify my profile. Told why I wanted to do MBA and how mining being a niche subject has limited my movement across vertical.
P-1 says do you know XL's HR is best in Asia.
Me: yes sir But HR was not my interest.
P-1: Ok fine do you have any questions for us.
Me: No sir.
P-3: don't be shy you can ask us anything.
P-1: Except how your interview went.
Me to p-2: I hope you don't mind sir but how do you know so much about mining.
P-1: arrey an electrical engineer was also asking to you, how you know so much about transformers!
P-2: I have worked in CIL.
P-1: Have a tofee.

I took a tofee, thanked them and left.

HRM/Mumbai WAT/GD: One who does not recognize the inherent differences between men and women can not be a good leader Interview (3 male panelists) Questions, in no particular order: 1. Why did you quit your job? Do you have no guilt that the company trained you for 1 year and then you quit? 2. You have done engineering from such a prestigious college; why did you waste resources of the college and now not even pursuing an engineering role? 3. Favourite subject? (I answered refining and petchem) Asked about Nelson complexity index of a refinery. Then, What is the capacity of Jamnagar refinery. A brief discussion on Brent crude and Arab Lite. 4. What is the difference between sex and gender 5. Why did you mention playing the Devil's advocate in GD, when talking about not stereotyping people into specific gender roles? 6. Where did you take your coaching from? 7. Asked a bit about siblings, I have a sister working in HR. The panelist says, "Ghar mein ek hi HR kaafi hai, tum please mat karo" or sth to that extent. 8. Preference between HR and BM? 9. What other calls do you have? Overall, the panel tried to conduct it like a stress interview and were attempting to grill and roast, like the damp piece of meat that we are. They also tried to dig into the deep, dark depths of my desolate heart and drag me through the drab drudgery of despair. Too poetic? SorryKThenksBi

For those, who still have their interviews left. This might help orient you! ALL THE BEST :) https://www.quora.com/How-was-your-XLRI-2019-interview-experience/answer/Palak-Singhal?ch=10&share=317a8f8c&srid=uzMiM

For XLRI, how many students are called in for BM & HRM courses approximately ?

When can we expect results?

Hi, Could some of you let me know the breakage of various parameters( XAT, GK, WAT-PI) in final selection Is it difficult to convert with average GD-PI for 98.36% in XAT and low GK percentile(15%) , ACAD & WE good( 90+ throught and 3 Yrs experience)

So we don't need to carry anything except Call letter and originals. What are the documents that the panelists would already be having.
