I appreciate your art of defence. However,as a fellow puy, i would suggest you not to use such ammunitions when in the interview battlefield.EVERY PUY COUNTS. :)

Unfortunately, yes. It is still there in mains and last year i.e. 2011, people with optionals such as pub ad had an avg. of 220 whereas indian language literature students such as "MAITHILI" and "PALI" ended up scoring an average of 300+.UPSC still acts as a monarchy.

@deepak1139 said:So Does that mean I should go for more unconventional subjects as I am from engg background and none of the subject are familiar to me now.For every subject I have to start from scratch.

After analysis of past year trends, one get tempted towards unconventional subjects and naturally so.However, remember one fact that a VENOM can be utilised as a MEDICINE only by a trained practitioner. In simple words, unconventional subjects too are not bed of roses and may prove to be thorny unless you have some intimacy with it i.e. interest, love.dedication, passion,et cetera.By saying so,i'm not advising you against it rather trying to provide you with a holistic analysis.P.S.:Engineers prefer subjects such as geography, pub ad,physics, sociology, anthroplogy and any of core engineering subject. For IT wallas, the list further diminishes.

Good to see a no. of IT people aspiring for the civil services,it reflects change.Well, coming to your query-I can only suggest you based on heuristics and there is no full proof binary logic behind it. 😃 Go through the syllabus of the list of subjects that i will list down, look for availability of study materials and last but not the least your curiosity and interest factor.Look for subjects with a FUZZY transition and avoid sharp transitions while reaching the decision node(your optional)
