@PalakMathur hey Palak.. I am planning for UPSC 2014. Want to know which books should I read to get started.. Also, many ppl say to go thru NCERTs,which subjects one shud cover in NCERTs, and which standard NCERTs one shuld cover.. like many say std. 8th to 12th will suffice while other emphasize on from 1st to 12th.. Thanks in advance
Hi Puja,

Personally speaking, I didnt refer NCERTs older than class IX. I referred class IX to XII for Science subjects. For others, I just used XI and XII NCERT books.

Here is the complete book list that I followed for GS:

After a disastrous attempt at CAT 2012 thinking of taking civil services. can i prepare for civil services prelims if i start now ? i've these books with me now: TMH,Pearson- thorpe,manorama,india year book,ncert books(6-12). are these sufficient enough ? don't know how to study all that, any pointers on how to approach and effective study plan ?
yes they are more than enough , first complete ncert -> tmh / pearson and selective reading of IYB / Manorama and do revise a LOT
@PalakMathur Good reference list for Section 1 (GS) at your blog :thumbsup: Really Helpful.

Any recommendations for Paper 2 of Prelims?

@visionIIM-ACL For Paper 2, I just referred my very old CL study material and did some passages from it. I revised Quant from Arun Sharma. For Decision-making, I had a very clear mind how an administrator should work, so, it helped there as well. I didn't follow any guides. I feel that guides are just waste of time. The publishers fear that their books will not sell and include all the rubbish in there and make aspirants fearful. I think with removal of optional from Prelims, prelims should be the easy nut to crack for anyone who has good hold on GS and has average aptitude or has great aptitude and average GS. :)

I personally will not recommend any guide - TMH/Pearson - they are all same. They will prepare for some unknown exam but certainly not CSAT. :)
@visionIIM-ACL Hi
Although I kind of knew that corporate life isn't my calling before taking the MBA plunge, but how have you decided on going for Civils? I mean resisting the lure of an easy job and put yourself into hours of preparation for an extremely tough competition?? Have you planned of any kind of fallback option?? I need some comforting words before I take the tough decision for myself...
@PalakMathur What are your optionals?
@ank_mission_IIM My optionals 'were' History and Pub. Ad.
@spatone I would suggest that rather than asking others, you decide why you
want to join Civil Services. The nature of exam is such
that you can't rely on someone else to keep you motivated.
You will have to keep yourself motivated. It will be your
responsibility. So don't take a plunge on someone else's motivation.
Try to figure out yours and get all wet.
@PuYGuY I would suggest don't waste your attempt. First decide
what you exactly want to do and then work hard to achieve it.

Am already in job post MBA!!

Going to prepare alongwith it .. have something to prove to someone through this exam and that is driving the motivation in me every moment!!

Have a promise which I have to keep ! 😃
@PalakMathur
My resolve is there. Its just that I h
ave been dissuaded by many. Have even posted by duplicate account on this thread coz many a real life people know me on PG. I fully understand that self motivation is the key. Thanks.
