I am an E&TC; engineer, 3 yrs in Infosys and now doing my MBA at IIMK.
I had the following electives narrowed down,
Management
Mathematics
Public Administration
History
Geography
Electrical Engineering
Given i finished my engg way back in 2005, i dropped Maths & Elec Engg. Management was dropped even though i am doing an MBA as i felt the papers were more theoretical and involved more of HRM, OB than finance which is my specialization and also i hate HRM, OB. Also Science subject have a pretty high moderation in marks and i heard management is tough to score and also the HR part disinterests me.
History was dropped as i like Geography more, due to the commercial and economic aspects it has.
Public Administration was listed as it is a favored optional and also has lot of subject matter and also it is more analytical in nature and i felt i can do justice to an analytical paper.
Finally, i selected Geography and Pub. Admn as my optionals for Mains given CSAT would come in this year.
folks, am i right in my selection given the interests and time lag i had from the other engg subjects. Also, suggest the books that i have to get for the above courses i.e. Geography & Public Administration.
1. New Horizons of Pub Ad - Mohit Bhattacharya 2. Administrative Thinkers - Prasad and Prasad 3. Indian Administration - Rajni Goyal and Ramesh Arora 4. Public Administration - Awasthi and Maheshwari
1. New Horizons of Pub Ad - Mohit Bhattacharya 2. Administrative Thinkers - Prasad and Prasad 3. Indian Administration - Rajni Goyal and Ramesh Arora 4. Public Administration - Awasthi and Maheshwari
These reports will cover most of your syllabus in Part 2 as well and can be used as additional souce in addition to Rajni Goyal
Its is told that the age limit for civil services is going to get reduced ?I know it is not getting implemented this year do u have any idea if it is getting implemented next year or not ?

Reducing the age limit from 30 to 26 has been proposed long back by YK Alagh committee AFAIK along with reduction in the number of attempts.
But these sort of decisions are populist and would take a much bigger overhaul of the system than expected and government would never want to touch such things.
As far as I see, they are going to change the pattern of evaluation for time being and CSAT is the way ahead.
Age limit reductions might not see the day at all in near future, anyways this is my opinion based on the way politics go on in this country.

No they are not going to reduce the age limit this year. It is one of the recommendations but would not be implemented as it has been kept on hold by the PM. They still have to decide on it. But everything will be clear only in December when the notification will be released.

I am thinking to write a series of posts on preparation for General Studies, like what books to refer and what strategies to follow. Hope it helps.
I will start with Economics for General Studies. I faced issues while preparing Economics like which books to refer. I wanted to have a general understanding of Economics, its basics, etc. Here is what I would suggest to read:-
1. NCERT Indian Economic Development Std. 11 2. NCERT Introductory MicroEconomics for Class XII 3. NCERT Introductory MacroEconomics for Class XII 4. Various magazines like Chronicle, Pratiyogita Darpan, Wizard come out with Special issues for Economics. You can read them as well. I prefer reading Pratiyogita Darpan for Economics 5. TMH or Spectrum's manual for GS has sections on Economics that can also be referred if you don't get time to read first three books but I would suggest to read the first three books and then you can read the manuals for more understanding 6. I also referred Economic Survey (ES). But I think you can read any related articles in the magazines. That would be sufficient. But ES gives you points that may be useful in Essay writing. But reading articles would be sufficient too 7. For budget any magazine would be sufficient 8. You can refer to artilces and editorial related to economics that appear in Newspapers 9. If you have internet access, then it could be a huge resource as well but don't waste time on internet
I think this would be of some help for those who are preparing for examination.

Syllabus is huge but that is what we have to face. Pub Ad is a nice subject.
As far as number of hours is concerned, you need to plan your time well so as to manage to complete and revise the syllabus in such a manner that you are comfortable with the subjects. I can't say a number here as it will vary from person to person.
