NCERT Books:-
1. History - You have to refer old syllabus books -
a) NCERT Ancient India by R.S.Sharma
b) NCERT Medieval India by Satish Chandra
c) NCERT Modern India by Bipan Chandra

Use the new books if you have your optional as History and reading the new books is in itself optional!!

2. Geography -
There are only four textbooks. If you have a decent look at the list of books, then the list also includes workbooks, books in other languages like Urdu and Hindi. Please have a careful look. You will have only four books to be referred. If you are still not able to identify, then the list is:-
a) Fundamental of Physical Geography - Class XI
b) Indian Physical Environment - Class XI
c) Fundamentals of Human Geograpy - Class XII
d) India - People and Economy - Class XII

3. Economy - Similar, is the case with Economics. You are getting panicked without even checking for once what is the language of other books. There are just three books, out of which only one important from the purpose of examination is from class XI - Indian Economic Development. Just read that. If you have time you can read the books on Macro and Micro Economics from Class XII. But I do not think they will be required.

Other books are fine. I would suggest if you lack time, then just read Indian Polity by TMH instead of D.D.Basu.

I understand that you mean the more books you read from the context to which you replied. If yes, then mind you, reading more books is not going to help. Concentrate on minimum number of books and read them again and again and make notes and ultra-notes.

You have to be very choosy about what you read and what you leave. Unless you are able to decide this, then UPSC is going to be a tough nut to crack.

More than reading multiple books, it is important to understand the fundamentals from a single or few books. Prelims will be easier to crack that way.

the strategy of limited reading is perfect for prelims...and the key is to understand basics. but for mains, i think, the more well read you are the better it is. So i'd suggest reading from multiple sources for mains.

Anyone in kolkata have old syallabus history books and wanted to share pls pm me.

Science means NCERT IX and X books for General Science. If you get time, then you can read books from VI to VII and XI and XII.

NCERT old history books mean of the syllabus that was prevalent before 2000.

Limited reading is not going to help. You need to cover the whole syllabus for Mains but it doesn't mean reading too many books for the same content. It means covering the syllabus from different sources and sticking to those sources.

No alternative for them!! :(

No, TMH guide and Spectrum guide are not required. Even if you will buy them, you won't get time to read them.

With all due respect, you've not understood what i said....limited reading does not mean leaving out syllabus.what i meant was sticking to say, one book for ancient history and keep revising from that same resource again and again.

This works for prelims. Tried and tested.

I never suggested limited reading for mains. Plus multiple sources is a must for mains to b able to develop your answers better. That's what upsc wants. It doesn't want every aspirant to rot up stuff from one book in one language. Multiple readings let you see different point of views and allow you to take an informed stance about issues when it comes to answer writing. Especially in GS.

i think you can write good answers when you have enough stuff in your head to come up with good points, examples, different views and so on.

What are you talking about Mains is possible only when you practice more and when you practice more, your thought process will also evolve.

Let us stop this discussion here. There is no point in proving a point. It is upto you how you work towards your preparation for examination. At the end of day, it is important to clear the exam, whatever be the way. The method should be convenient to you.

I am not trying to prove any point. You misunderstood and misrepresented my views. I had to jump in and clarify for other readers. that's it.

CSE Candidates' Information Central

Some More Words & Their Meanings

1. Elucidate - It means to throw light on or explain. A statement is to be made intelligible by providing relevant facts & figures. You are not going to differ in such questions but just follow the track it provides to you, just giving explanations if required with examples , To Elucidate >> Convince the Statement.

2. Comment - It Requires personal Views of a candidate. Please note that " to comment " is not " to argue". It is necessary here to be balanced on each aspects , for and against, including every topic of the statement. Though a candidate can conclude either for or against but not necessarily to any one side specifically. Illustrations , datas , incidents , facts can be used to comment your view.

3. Examine - This question compulsorily requires result of examination. One cannot be at middle point or remain undecisive to be neutral. The statement requires a close inspection to bring out facts throwing light on various merits and demerits and concluding on any one side.

4. Critically Examine - Here too , one must give judgement. One needs not to justify any fact or point but to be critical to them so that no side - for or against - seems to be favoured. As a critic does not be either for or against but for at some aspects and against at others.

5. Discuss - It gives you a chance to narrate various aspects & details of the statement. It is comparatively easy to discuss as you are neither required to explain nor to examine. Just providing necessary detail about various aspects of the question will suffice the answer.

6. Illustrate - To give example to explain the topic in the statement , to make it clear. Here too, relevant datas , quotations and facts can help to point out. But it must be remembered that you are not going to write an opposie to the staement. One needs to follow the direction of the statement and to explain it in that way.

7. Simplify - To simplify means to made simple the statement. Give Definition , Meaning , Explanation , details , examples and make the statement easy to grasp.

8. Argue - To argue is to give for & against arguments on different aspects & effects of the statement. Remember , both sides must be covered.

9. Review - To review is to have a look on the historical facts of the staement. It is an expertise inspection of any topic. What outcomes & results you get produced there.

10. Justify - In it, A statement regarding any result , decision or fact is given. Candidate has to justify it by explaining its benefits or merits & expressing its effects on minimising the adverse side. To prove propaganda in the statement logically & step by step is the expectation.

Here I am presenting Toppers View on Interview

1. 'While facing the interview board the selection of right kind of words that need to be spoken & the mode of presentation of one's answers matter a lot'

Mayur Maheshwari , Rank 6 (CSE 2002)

2. For the interview , one should be one's natural self. There is no point trying to portray an image before the Interview Board, which anyways cannot be sustained for long. Not much preparation is needed for this stage, as it is a personality test where your entire individuality is being assessed. Speak your mind out over issues that you believe in, have a sense of humour and be yourself , and never pretend or lie. But before that one should be absolutely thorough with the details entered in one's bio-data, current events , home state and issues surrounding one's optional subjects.

Bandana Preyashi , Rank 16 ( CSE 2002 )

3. It is a personality test. Focus should be to present yourself as a balanced personality. Presentation of thoughts in a lucid manner is very important. One should be able to give balanced views and make sure not to defend anything about which one is not certain.

Shurbir Singh Rank 4 ( CSE 2003 )

4. Being honest & polite , yet being firm on one's views is crucial to performing well in the interview. Tutored answers are not usually liked by the board & it tries to test a candidate's original thinking and presence of mind. Being honest and clear in you mind. Mock interviews and discussions help a lot in raising one's confidence level.

Avantika Gautam , Rank 15 ( CSE 2002 )

5. One should start preparing for the interview from the day one decides to go for the civil services. It needs a lot of self analysis and improvement in one's character in the light of requirements of the civil services. A serious hobby should be developed.

Nidhi Kesarwani , Rank 27 ( CSE 2003 )

Hi Everyone,
I believe that every regular and serious member should post a couple of questions daily, focused on prelims.... this will lead to nice quiz en route to the final exams. We still have some days to go, few questions a day will certainly do a world of good to preparations...

My first..

Q. What is the pH level of blood of normal person?
(a) 4.5-4.5 (b) 6.45-6.55
(c) 7.35-7.45 (d) 8.25-8.35
