@Palak ji I hope u hav come back to PUNE again.. Even i m not fan of CSchronicle bcoz its very expensive also when it comes to value addtion.. So i think v r only 2 persons who oppose Chronicle in this world...anyone else here??
I do not say that Chronicle is not good. However, I prefer newspapers and other magazines and books in place of Chronicle. Because I just cannot remember anything that is written in Chronicle. Yes, Chronicle's special additions covering different subjects are good for revision.

Whle preparing last year i found current affairs to be the most important aspect for both premils and mains. So i was thinking to make a group and create a repository where each member can upload a topic/questions which they find relevant and important. That will not only help us for prelims but also for mains because we will have a complete repository with us by the time we need those for mains...and it is very difficult to do alone....
So if other puys find it suitable then please let me know....i can host a website (as i have space where i host 2 sites for our department in iit delhi)....where we can upload and manage the contect of the site....
Please tell me about the Practice material(question solving, papers etc.) book so that i cn regularly assess my preparation. I m planning to buy TMH or pearson or any other kinda guide..Plz suggest sum gud book...I have started just now and want to track my progress from time to time(as studying only from past few days and dont know whether its relevant or nt).
To access your knowledge, I would suggest that you better join a test series, either online or paper.
And also tell me about the magazines. Right now i am referring Pratiyogita Darpan only...dont knw abt the content much but as of now it is gud...i guess sticking with it is fyn but still just wanna ask u whther i shd go with sum others magazine too?
I didn't find any magazine specially made for examination good enough. I used to read Pragati and sometime The Economist. It is upto you to decide which magazine do you like to read. People generally refer Chronicle and Pratiyogita Darpan.
I am not getting NCERTs Books so started with Subject specific books...as of now i have started my prep with Geo.-by goh cheng and Indian Polity-D.D. Basu tell me how to get online NCERTs (soft copy) / or online order and is it ok to go with new version of NCERTs as i guess they r nt available in the market...
I do not know whether you will get all the books here or not but you can certainly try Digital Library of India
and for prelims is it enough to go thoroughly with NCERTs(old or new) of all the subjects?
Yes, new NCERTs if done thoroughly can be of immense help!! Though I find History New syllabus NCERTs interesting but I have not read them thoroughly, so will not be able to comment on them. Old syllabus NCERTs for history are what people recommend.
I hav started with
Indian Polity- DD Basu Nd geography-NCERT 11th, 12th + Goh cheng Leong...(8 to 10th required ?) Magazine-Pratiyogita Darpan Newspaper-TOI Practice material- Nil Year Book-Manorama('ll go for Indian Year Book also)
Good enough. I think Geography for XI and XII are sufficient. For General Science, refer IX and X books and if get time then only go for XI and XII otherwise not required. If you see last two years Prelims, they are set from NCERTs only. So, go ahead with NCERTs.
For practice, you should join a test-series. No material can replace exams.
Wt other topics are there which are not covered in GEO & Polity books(preferably from prelims point of view)?
You will not find the current perspective in the books. Rest all is covered by books. For Indian Polity, I would recommend you to go with Indian Polity by Laxmikanth. It is precise and contains the material that UPSC asks or will ask. D.D. Basu is a nice book to read. But I think we can take care of niceties after clearing the exam. Also, if PubAd is not your optional then do not read D.D.Basu. Better to go with Indian Polity by Laxmikanth.

its just an advice....:biggrin:
There is one issue with the thread/repository ...that is ...after a few months there will be too many files and it will be troublesome and unattractive to go tho=rough the files when we really need to .....a website with proper navigation will make it easier to categorize the stuffs and thus make is easy to use...
But yes rightly pointed ....need to find out a way to give edit access to everyone with the provision that there should be a back up in case of an accidental delete....
