Hi palak, First of all i would like to thank you for taking this inititative and making this thread active.
Thank you. It will remain active only when others will start chatting over here.
Secondly, can you please guide me abt one or two confusion
I will try to answer your query:-
1-I have decided to take chemsitry as one of my optional and bit confused abt 2 subject. So, can you throw some lighht on Publc admin, sociology and political science.
I will try to answer your query from my point of view and why I selected the optionals that I did.
Chemistry is a good optional if you have interest in it and have good basics. Any science/technical subject for that matter is good and helps in scoring marks.
PolSc has a very vast syllabus, so I would not suggest to take PolSc as second optional along with Chemistry. I was initially very much inclined towards this but gave way to PubAd just because of its vast syllabus.
As far as PubAd, Sociology and PolSc are concerned, I have studies PubAd and it is very interesting subject. And it helps in writing GS answers as well. Study material is also easily available. If you have good writing skills, then you can select this subject.
Sociology is another interesting subject. My mother did her MA in Sociology. So, in the beginning, I was interested in this. But after Reading Ram Ahuja, I found it very boring.
I would suggest go through the syllabus. Read few chapters from the recommended books and solve questions related to them. If possible get these answers checked. Select the optional only when you are comfortable and interested in it.
2-Abt NCERT books FOr GS whether i should study 8 to 10 books or from 8 to 12. for GEography,History, science etc.
I think XI and XII are fine. If you have time then you can read books from VIII to X.
3-for current affairs whihc magazine is good.
Chronicle is good. But I didn't referred it. I had subscribed to a Current Affairs module (panorma) from UPSC Mantra. It was good enough to cover all the current affairs, current science and tech, etc.
Thank you. It will remain active only when others will start chatting over here.

For History, you may also like to read India's Struggle for Independence by Bipan Chandra.

2. Practical Work in Geography is not required. In its place download India:Physical Environment. Rest all are fine.
@Palak Mathur ji .... MPSC HAV REMOVED OPTIONALS IN MAINS PLUS MAINS WILL B ONLY OBJECTIVE WITH 4 GS SUBJECTS... Notifictatn on Mpsc.gov.in I m gonna concentrate on mpsc only bcoz upsc optionals also may scrap..but in PSCs clas 1 seats r less.. Whats ur take on this new notificatn..
Oh man, it is a great news!! But unless UPSC removes optionals from Main, it will have not much impact on our studies as we still have to prepare for Optionals.
One question, now what 4 subjects will MPSC ask??
UPSC's notification will come in Feb. What are your optionals? Have you decided?
hi guys i am new here, started preparing for civil services my optionals are public administration and literature of pali any help for me
For PubAd, I referred following books:-
1. New Horizons of PubAd by Mohit Bhattacharya 2. Indian Constitution by DD Basu 3. Administrative Thinkers by Prasad, Prasad, Satyanarayana, Pardhasaradhi 4. Indian Pub Ad by Arora and Goyal 5. ARC Reports
In my opinion, MB is the most boring book but has some finest examples. So, read it, again read and read it again and again. Do not put this down after reading it once. Read it again two or three times continuously to take out anything from it.
I have not read Pali as a subject. But had thought about taking it as a subject. It is interesting and easy subject. If you ask specific question, then I may be able to answer your query.

Just checked MPSC's website and notification. See attachment.
Some points:-
1. 6 subjects in mains - two in languages (100 marks each, Descriptive) and four in GS(150 marks each, MCQ type objective with 2:1 negative marking)
2. Passing is each subject is must. Passing % for General - 45% and 40% for reserved category.
3. Interview of 100 marks.
4. Four Subjects are:-
i) GS 1:- History and Geography ii) GS 2:- Indian Constitution and Indian Politics and Law iii) GS 3:- Human Resource Development and Human Rights iv) GS 4:- Economy and Planning, Economics and Development, Science and Technology Development
I am presenting the list of books that I followed for History as many people have asked for the same through PM and email:-
Ancient India: 1. NCERT (old syllabus) Ancient India by R S Sharma 2. IGNOU notes (These are the best when combined with NCERT) 3. Early India by Romila Thapar (followed partially) 4. Wonder that was India Part 1 by AL Basham
Medieval India: 1. NCERT (old syllabus) Medieval India by Satish Chandra 2. Medieval India Part 1 and 2 by Satish Chandra 3. Advanced Study in the History of Medieval India Part III by JL Mehta 4. Initially when I didn't know what to follow, I followed Wonder that Was India Part 2 by Rizvi and had made its notes. So, I referred it notes. But it is not required.
Modern India: 1. NCERT (old syllabus) Modern India by Bipan Chandra 2. India's Struggle for Independence by Bipan Chandra 3. A new look at Modern Indian History by Grover and Grover (Chapter 4-22, Chap 40-44, Chap 49) 4. India After Independence by Bipan Chandra 5. Modern India by Sumit Sarkar (followed only till Prelims of 2010). After that it is just a part of my book-shelf :). Its each sentence is worth a Prelim question on History. Even in GS pre, they frame questions from this. I have no idea how to tame this book.:)
World History: 1. Just read NCERT old syllabus books from Class IX to XII. Didn't had time to read any other book that was recommended like World History Guide by Jain and Mathur or Krishna Reddy.
I concentrated more on NCERTs and IGNOU (Ancient India).
@Palak Mathur & @chamber Whats better between this- TOP KI CLASS 2 JOB VIA SSC(Eg.ITI,Examiner) or Class1 job via state PSC
Palak Mathur Says
No idea about SSC. I have only inclination towards UPSC IAS, IPS, IFS or other Grp A jobs!!
Sorry,I didn't see State PSC thought that you are talking about UPSC. Any day PSC will be better as you get your own state. That is the reason many people fill home state as the option in UPSC as well. Firstly, it is your State and it is quite possible that you have good knowledge of State politics. Secondly, politicians prefer home officers.
I went to Sales Tax Bhavan in Mumbai(HO)...they told me nowdays there is not much imporatnce in Sales tax..everytime Central Excise overshadow them... State govt walo ki importance kam hoti jaa rahi hai..aur har time central govt apne pass jyada adhikar rehna chahta hai..
Central Excise ki importance to shuru se hi zyada hai. Haan relatively ab zyada kharab ho rahi hogi Sales Tax waalon ki poochh!! 😉
