regarding subjects u have to go through the syllabus of that particular subject.. what interests u is the basic funda behind choosing a subject. most people even engineers choose subjects like Anthropology, pub Ad or psychology because they are relatively easier to comprehend. The trick lies in articulating yourself. u need to have impeccable writing skills to succeed. Also most of the people go for Pub Ad jst because that is what u r supposed to do as a part of ur Job and training.

Someone guide me regarding Geography for Prelims. Which books to follow, preparation strategy ect.

Geography is a good subject as an optional. However, much will depend on your writing skills and your interest and knowledge. For the starters, I would suggest go through NCERT XI and XII books on Geography -- all of them. I think you will need to read them and re-read them, until your basics are strong. For the list of books, PM me, I will send you the complete list.

Then it is great. I was simply wondering that how are you managing your time as you said that you are working. I am working too and I find it extremely difficult to concentrate on one thing for a long time. Anyways, I would love to hear your success story once it is done. It will help me gain some confidence. Wish you all the best!!

Engineering service exam is held every year by UPSC . Conducted in 4 disciplines- Electrical, Electronics and communication, Civil , Mechanical.
You can give the exam in any of these four disciplines irrespective of your engineering degree discipline.
Consists of two stages- Written and Interview.
Written for 1000 marks
Interview for 200 marks

Candidates are called by UPSC for interview in about 3:1 ratio according to the number of posts that year.
combined merit list is then prepared.

The exam process takes about an year.
Written is held in June. Interviews sometime in Feb or march next year . Then some more time for result declaration. Joining comes in December-january

Better call up UPSC and ask directly. The number is given on the web site. Also , it is CRF(central Recruitment Fee) stamp and not RPF stamp.

What are your subjects??

For General Studies, here find the mention of the books:-

History: NCERT(old syllabus books for XI and XII)
India's Struggle for Independence by Bipin Chandra
Note: First complete the NCERT books. You can arrange the old books from some seniors as the old syllabus books are not available in the market.
Geography: NCERT (XI and XII books, new syllabus books are also good).
Geography through Maps by Anil Kesari
Note: Have an Atlas handy while studying Geography. And when I say handy means, refer it whenever you encounter some geographical feature, relief, place, pattern, etc.

Polity: Indian Constitution by Laxmikanth

Economy: Read NCERT books from class VIII onwards.
Note: Frankly speaking, I have not read them so far. Nor I intend to do so. If I will get time then I may think of going through them. Analyse the previous year papers. I would recommend to go for Arihant papers for GS(Pre) as they have already analysed the paper well.
Science and Technology: Read NCERT books
Or You can rely on TMH Guide or Spectrum Guide.

Misc: India Year Book.

Note: Also have the syllabus handy while studying so that you do not overburden yourself with useless information. Stick to the syllabus.

I would like to add....

Get class notes of GS of Students of 'Vajiram and Ravi' . They are easily available in shops in Ber Sarai , Rajinder Nagar and Mukherjee nagar. Since the syllabus is very vast, it helps having concise notes which can be revised over and over.

i am based in kolkata if i take postal coaching from"vajiram and ravi" will it be ok? i am taking public administration for the prelims . or it is better to go to delhi?
