I aspire to be an IAS officer like everyone on this thread. I have researched on the optional subjects but I am not sure what courses to choose. What optional subjects would you recommend for an environmental engineering graduate like me? What are the strategies to prepare for prelims and mains? What magazines, books, newspapers and websites would you recommend to prepare for general studies? I would highly appreciate if someone could give me some guidance as to how to go about preparing for IAS.

Friends, What is the best coaching institute in terms of quality of material for Economics?
I have only heard 2 or 3 names i.e. Vajiram, rau, etc.
frnds plz suggest me good ias coaching institutes for english medium in delhi and mumbai .

well, If age is not a prob., i.e. u can afford to do an mba and take up CSE after a year or after that...then certainly complete ur studies first.
if age is a prob. then u have to let go one!
more so, after an mba from a good institute...ur profile will have an edge over others.
I know many who entered civil services after doing mba from iims / xlri.
My advice wud be to do an mba i.e. if age permits

Done B.Sc. in basic sciences , got 95.51 percentile in cat nd converted some decent colleges ,so will be doin MBA ..I havenot taken coaching as of now but plan to take in near future......Wat about you......can u suggest some good geography books......

I am opting for Psychology and Economics. I have started with Economics from NCERT and Nordhaus. About Psychology, I am not sure what material should be chosen except for 11th & 12th NCERT books. I am thinking of taking coaching material for psychology.

Engineering grad. worked for 1.5yrs. quit now. preparing on my own. also doing an MA in psychology from IGNOU.
Will take my 1st attempt next year. was planning to take a chance this year. dropped the idea cus m not prepared for the mains throughly.
Good books for geography:
1. NCERT to start with. 11th n 12th
2. Khullar for geog. of india
3. saviinder singh for physical geog.
4. strahler and strahler
i havent referred to book 2 3 or 4. plan to get em if the need be. but they are the popular books recommended by those who cleared the exam and got decent marks.
I got the correspondence material from a coaching institute called civils india by majid hussain....but it aint worth the 3000 i paid for it.
referring the standard books will be more prudent.
