UPSC CSE Exam 2019: Admit Card, Syllabus, Result

Getting 125-130 marks in GS Paper 1 a/c to CL, ALS, and  GS SCORE. Total attempt 95 , correct 72 , incorrect 23. Last year gs paper 1 score was 112. I think I'm in.

I am scoring 84 marks in paper 1  obc  category ..What are my chances??

when Upsc changed prelim pattern this year, there was a brouhaha that this year GS paper will be super tough.I also thought that. But what we saw that paper was easy to moderate only.So there is no point of dilly-dallying in probable cutoff. We cannot bring upsc in our prognosticatory discussion. It can be anything,a rock bottom 90 or a sky-kissing 130.If you have the chance of scoring even 90,start prep for main. If cut off becomes low,you will write main...if it goes high,ur study will be beneficial for the 2016 exam.... ...

In this article, we would discuss soil horizons and processes for the formation of soil.

Soil formation is a result of various processes that tend to affect the soil profile (parallel layers of soil each with distinct physical characteristics). Following are the processes that result in soil formation:

1. Eluviation: It is the mechanical translocation of clay or other fine particles from upper layers to lower layers due to downward precipitation. The particles could also translocate in dissolved form.

2. Illuviation: It is the accumulation of the washed off material i.e. eluviated material in the lower layers of the soil profile. Water percolating the soil leaches out soluble salts and mineral particles, thereby adding them to the lower portions.

3. Leaching: It is the loss of water soluble material like calcium due to percolation of water down the soil profile.

4. Cheluviation: It is a combination of weathering of minerals by organic acids and translocation of organic matter through the layers of soil profile. It is similar to leaching but under the influence of organic complex compounds.

Soil Horizons

UPSC

1. Layers of soil parallel to each other whose physical characteristics are different from one another.

2. They are separate from one another by boundaries which range from indistinct to abrupt to clear.

3. Horizons are formed due to differences in depth, amounts of humus accumulated, translocation or loss of colloids.

4. Capital letters A, B, C, E, O and R are used to define master horizons.

5. Lowercase letters are used to indicate specific characteristics of the master horizon.

6. Study of the soil profile gives important information about the fertility of soil. Its composition helps to establish the process of its formation and is an important tool for agriculture.

Soil fertility and plant nutrition

1. Soil fertility depends on the amount of essential elements and organic matter present in it.

2. Organic matter like the remains of dead plants and animals (decomposed by microorganisms) in the soil act as a reservoir for nutrients.

3. Absorption and utilisation of essential elements that are necessary for plant growth and their metabolism ensures good plant nutrition.

4. Complex interactions like decomposition of organic matter, weathering of rock and microbial activity produces inorganic minerals in soil.

5. Plants need at least 16 essential elements, namely carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, sulphur, calcium, iron, magnesium, boron, manganese, copper, zinc, molybdenum and chlorine.

UPSC

Dear PaGaLGuY Readers,

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducted the Civil Services preliminary examination 2015 on August 23rd. About 4.65 lakh aspirants appeared for the preliminary examination this year, an increase from last year's 4.51 lakh aspirants. In this article, let us look at the analysis of this exam, the likely cutoff of the exam and the answer keys to the two papers.

General Studies Paper I Analysis:

One of the most significant changes observed in Paper I this year was that a number of questions were based on current events of national and international importance (international summits, regional groupings, international agreements and their outcome, etc.). Further, this year's questions were less analytical - and therefore, less tricky/difficult - last year's questions. This year's questions were largely based on facts/static details of various subjects. As was expected, General Science along with Environment, Bio-diversity and Ecology comprised about 20% of the paper (more or less similar to last year's pattern). In addition, this year's paper saw an increase in the number of questions in the sections of Economics & Budget and Indian Polity and Governance.  Geography and History sections had about the same weight as that in 2014. Another observation was that the number of questions on art, architecture, religion and culture in History have reduced.

The breakup of this paper is as follows:

General Studies Paper I                                             No. of questions

1. Current Affairs and General Knowledge                             14

2. Indian Polity                                                                          13

3. Geography                                                                            15

4. Economic and Social Development + Schemes                23

5. History (Ancient, Medieval, Modern, Indian                        13

National Movement and Constitution of India)

6. General Science                                                                   09

7. Environment, bio-diversity, climate change                        13

Cutoff

Overall, GS Paper - I this year was slightly easier than last year's paper. Do note that the GS Paper - II is only a qualifying paper this year (marks scored in this paper would not be counted towards the cutoffs for eligibility to appear for Mains). Accordingly, the expected cutoffs this year are as follows:

Category         Cutoffs (+/- 5 marks) out of 200 marks

General                 105

OBC                      100

SC                          92-93

ST                           85

General Studies Paper II Analysis:

This year's General Studies Paper II (or CSAT) was not significantly different from last year's paper. However, the paper was lengthy, with an increase in the reading comprehension passage-based questions. In all, the paper had 23 passages, including 19 passages that were followed by only one question each. Also, questions on decision making and interpersonal skills were absent this year (similar to last year). The numerical/ mathematical ability and analytical/ critical ability sections contributed roughly the same number of questions as they did last year. Further, these questions were comparatively easy. Overall, though the paper was lengthy, it was easier than last year's paper.

General Studies Paper II                                             No. of questions

1. Reading Comprehension                                                     30

2. Logical Reasoning                                                               06

3. Numerical ability and Data Interpretation                          32

4. Analytical or Critical Ability                                                 12

5. Decision Making and Interpersonal skills                         00

The answer keys of the two papers can be seen below.

mains ke liye kitne select hote haiiii...........prilims ke bad civil service ke exam me

Prelims is over and I am sure many of you who are reading this will clear that stage. Don't be too happy about it. it is just one small step towards a bigger goal. The goal to contribute towards society. The goal to bring positive change in people's lives (Mind you, your goal is not just to become an IAS). The next stage is more fierce, more competitive and more demanding. It can make you realize your limitations but at the same time, it gives you a chance to learn and know about what is happening about you. It will sanitize you about social milieu you live in and about the ways you can contribute towards the society.

Often, prelims and mains are different ball game. While prelims is very diverse and requires certain skill sets, mains is more about focus, analysis and have an in-depth understanding of a subject. Off late,  UPSC is asking questions based not just on the facts but based on your understanding and perspective. There might not be right or wrong answers to many of the questions asked in UPSC.

Now the task is not that simple. You can't just read, memorize and reproduce in the exam. You have to understand the topic which you read, understand multiple perspectives about each topic and come up with your own perspective. In such a scenario, debates and discussions among your peers, with parents, and with mentors would come handy.

Writing practice has its own advantages, but you would write only those things which you know. So knowing becomes more paramount. Try to build up a perspective. Try to read multiple resources. Don't just stick to one paper. Try to include 2 or 3 papers to understand various points of view. Talk to you seniors often about the subjects which are socially relevant. Try to put yourself in that situation (as an administrator) and think about the solution from multiple perspectives.

To know the facts is the bare minimum which all the 16000 candidates writing mains will be doing. To crack it with flying colors, you need to walk on extra mile, you need to be original in your thought and should be able to communicate well through your writing. I hope you get an idea of how to proceed with your preparation for mains.
