gk update for the month jan 2011
suruchi bansal Sayshi........what about geography as an optional...there is lot of competition in this subject ..n i've heard they take same proportion of students from each subject..will it be good to opt geography?
choose an optional in which u have interest.
Candidates were screened in proportion to the optional for the mains exam.
Now that the pattern has changed, one cant be sure about it.
people say Geography is vast compared to other subjects, but every subject needs equal preparation, in one way or the other. Few need to be studied more in depth and some more in breadth.
Decide with your kind of interest and aptitude.
All the best.

General Awareness in UPSC CSE is not the one generally thought of. If you see the syllabus then you will realize it is not that simple.
Palak Mathur SaysGeneral Awareness in UPSC CSE is not the one generally thought of. If you see the syllabus then you will realize it is not that simple.
Completely agree with you :)
I just meant that only one paper needs to be focussed at more as other paper will be at easier end:)
Myself Mrunal Patel.
Once upon a time, I cleared the UPSC prelim (2009) .
but no interview call due to low marks in Mains :(
Anyways, after glancing through this thread, I saw many newcomers have routine questions, let me clarify them all.
Is coaching necessary?
Simple answer: NO, because UPSC is constantly changing the pattern to put coaching classes at disadvantage. Myself twice victim of this, because I've been preparing with the coaching-class factory mindset in General studies.

Should I leave my job to prepare for UPSC?
It depends.
Mohd.Safi did it without leaving the job (rank #55, got IAS, no coaching). Following thread
Safi got Rank 55 without coaching or leaving the job on his first trial
What about the optionals?
In descending order of importance
1.Your interest cum scaling system.
2.Availability of material.
3.Your graduation background
