Banks are the engine of economic growth they provide required capital to big businesses that give rise to employment . But sadly in case of indiano economy the non perfoming assets have rose upto 10 lakh crores .This is a matter of concern because banks are not in a position to lend money to run the economic cycle .On the other side the business are not having the required money to pay back to banks this twin phenomena known as twin deficit.
The reasons of such conditions of banks is mainly due to the large number of loans given to infrastructure companies in previous govemrent without properly seeing the credit worthiness.Apart from this issues bank frauds that has heppened in case of vijaya malaya ,nirav modi has also increased this problem.
The goverment of india recently lauched bank recapitalisation scheme where goverment will provide money through recapitalisation bonds and some money from the budget also. Apart from that banks have been asked to raise money through selling thier equity in market. Apart from this goverment has formed bank board bureau to look into the senior management functioning of banks apart from hiring of senior level employees. Indradhanush was also launch to revive the health of banks. Merger of sbi with its branches was also done to improve overall functioning of bank.
Though various steps have been taken but the desired result is not achieved the goevrment shoufd take the following steps to revive health of banks. Firstly the goverment should have no invelvement in decision making in banks they should be allowed to work proffessionally. Secondly Rbi should be given powers for the removal of cmd of banks if thier performance is not good rather than goverment deciding on this. Proper training should be given timely to mid level employees. Proper Auditing, monitoring should be done in banks on timely basis by third party so that any flaws in system can be highlighted. Employees of bank should be given free hand in loan disposal so that they are not harressed by agencies like CVC,CAG,INCOME TAX ETC
Though the banks are in not good conditions but if above steps are taken then thier health can be revived over a period of time and thus helping the reviving of Indian economy.
