SAGARMALA PROJECT
Indian people in its ancient civilisation and even in medivial period have widely used sea routes as a mode of communication but that seems to have to lost in present time to revive this communication the goverment has launched the ambitious Sagarmala project.This project will be implemented by Ministry of shipping.
The sagarmala project will led to development of National waterways in different parts of india . One of them NW1 thats it will connect alloahbad from Haldia. There are many others that are about to built. Apart from waterways building the goverment is also planning to modernise ports and infrasturucture . In this project its also includes connecting coastal towns with ports with good quality roads,railways,pipelines . All this will led to reducation in logistic costs which is one of the highest in India and thus helping customers with reduced costs of good. Apart from that it will also help in increasing the GDP as logistic is the most important economic activity.
The goverment also planning to built 14 coastal economic zones near ports that will provide lakhs of employment opportunities to youth .One of the projects is near JNPT port in mumbai that goverment is trying to develop.
But there are many challenges in the implementation part likes one of them being financing of these projects as our banks are not capable to fund due to high NPA. Secondly many environmentalist are saying that it will destroy the fragile coastal plains effecting the wildlife in these areas. Many people doing fisheries in these areas are also against these projects.
Though the project will definitely lead to development and economic growth of India but the goverment should keep the angle of environment in Mind as well as the life of people who have been living in these areas from decades.
