There used to be a time when people had only newspaper or radio as a Source of news .But with the development of technology television,internet ,watsapp etc news is very easily accessible. But this technology has been used by many people through out the world to craete fake news,paid news .As its is rightly said that we are living in post truth era.
Paid news has started as a new culture in India where many political parties ,multnational companies are using this for there personal benefit.
Piad news can have serious consequences on democracy where people mindset can be changed in minutes by showing a good leader in a negative image .In the recent case many big political parties have a good stake in news channels where news is shown according to benefit of the party.Cambridge analytica -facebook scandal being the recent example.
Some impacts of paid news being it adversely effect level playing field , its misleads the people, increase in election expenditure, and influences the voter and thier right to information.
There are some steps taken Election commission of India where it issed instruction to district authorities to report paid news, appointed media certification and monitoring committe, law commission in report no 255 have also given suggestions on paid news.
There are some challenges also to control paid news as elections have tight timelines so paid news becomes a second priority, eastablishing transaction of cash by political parties is indeed not very easy.
The folowing steps need to be taken control this issue RPA act 1951 needs to be amended to make paid news an offence, more awareness campaigns among masses, imposing, heavy fines on media channel will act as a detterent .
