I will say one thing, from the point of view of the question maker. If they are present in the same question, that means they are different, otherwise they are not π ..
Also, if the answer comes out to be absurd OR introduces extra cases whereas the options doesn't contain cannot be determined, then take the meaning which gives you a definite answer. I remember following this approach in some mock, where I got confused.

I dont think the 2nd statement's construct is correct. I mean I think the grammar is wrong.
Had it been : 'B sits 2 places away from A, to the right of A' , then layout is A _ _ B
for 1st sentence, layout is A_B
Had it been : 'B sits 2 places away from A, to the right of A' , then layout is A _ _ B
for 1st sentence, layout is A_B
