in an examination 45% students failed in hindi and 32% failed in History,20% failed in both the subjects.if the number of students who passed the examination was 880,how many students appeared in the examination consisted only of these two subjects..

Either I am mistaken(about my lvl of prep) or the question is slightly mistyped...u sure no. of students passed=880?? is it not 860?

u see solving the question using venn diagram...c the figure attached..

the question is right dude its 880 only

At IIM, Bangalore, 60% of the students are boys and the rest are girls. Further 15% of the boys and 7.5% of the girls are getting a fee waiver. If the number of those getting a fee waiver is 90,find the total number of students getting 50% concession if it is given that 50% of those not getting a fee waiver are eligible to get half fee concession..
A machine depreciates in value each year at the rate of 10% of its previous value.however every second year there is some maintenance work so that in that particular year depreciation is only 5% of its previous value.if at the end of the fourth year,the value of the machine stands at rs.1,46,205 then find the value of machine at the start of the first year
pls explain in detail with steps..

45% failed in Hindi and 32% failed in History. Also 20% failed in both.

=> Percentage of students who failed in atleast one the subjects= 45+32-20=57

=> Number of students who passed the examination=100-57=43%

Now 43%=880
=> Total number of students= 88000/43=2046.xx

(I guess some of the data given above is mistyped. If it would have been 48% students failed in Hindi, then we would have got an integer value for the total number of students as 48+32-20=60%=> 40%=880=> 100%=2200)

1. Total students = x
Boys = 0.6x
Girls = 0.4x
Fee Waiver for boys = 0.6x*0.15 = 0.09x
Fee Waiver for girls = 0.4x * 0.075 = 0.03x
Total fee waiver = 0.09x + 0.03x = 0.12x
Given,
0.12x = 90
x = 750
Students not getting fee waiver = 750 - (0.12x) = 660
Half fee concession = 660/2 = 330

2. Value at first year = x
End of first year = 0.9x
End of second year = 0.9x * 0.95 = 0.855x
End of third year = 0.855x * 0.9 = 0.7695x
End of fourth year = 0.7695x * 0.95 = 0.731025x
Given,
0.731025x = 146205
x = 200000

Initial Salary = x
Lets say salary increased by y% and then by 2y%
=> x * (100+y/100) * (100+2y/100) = 15x/8
=> x * (100+y) * (100+2y) = 15x * 100 * 100/8
=> x * (100+y) * (100+2y) = 18750x
=> (100+y) * (100+2y) = 125*150
=> y = 25%

My take is 25%

Let his initial salary be y and raise be x% and 2x%.

=> (15/8 )*y = y * *

=> * = 15/8
=> = 25*25*2*15 = 125*150
=> x = 25%

Prema goes to a shop to buy sofa costing Rs.13080. the rate of sales tax is 9%. She tells the shopkeeper to reduce the price of sofa so that she has to pay Rs.13080 inclusive of taxes. Find the %age reduction needed in price of sofa to satisfy her requirement?

so,
(1+x/100) (1+2x/100) = 15/8
x=25 satisfy this.

x(1.09)=13080
x=13080/1.09 = 12000

% reduction = 1080/13080.100= 8.25%

Check the XY-product constancy module in % by Arun Sharma:::
13080x(1- x/100)x (1+ 9/100)= 13080
cancel 13080 from both sides
In xy product constancy a rise in 9% is offset by a reduction in 9/(100+9)
=8.25% approx.
ANS:::9(100)/109 %

"in an examination 45% students failed in hindi and 32% failed in History,20% failed in both the subjects.if the number of students who passed the examination was 880,how many students appeared in the examination consisted only of these two subjects.."

Answer : Your question can be solved using Venn-Diagram.
Consider the venn diagram for Hindi and History... the parameters being
a=failed only in hindi
b=failed in both
c=failed in history

Let total no of students be x

So as per the question
a+b=0.45x
b+c=0.32x
and b = 0.2x
so a=0.25x
b=0.20x
c=0.12x
So people who have failed in atleast one subject = 0.57x
So people who passed in both the subjects = 0.43x ----> (1)
and people who passed in atleast one subject = a + c = 0.37x (since a and c dentoes people who have failed only in "one" subject) ----> (2)
so (1) + (2) = 0.8x = total no of people who have passed the examination.
So 0.8x = 880
ie x = 1100 = total no of students...
Sorry for keeping it long 😃

x(1.09)=13080
x=13080/1.09 = 12000

% reduction = 1080/13080.100= 8.25%

x is the price such that after 9% tax on x,the total amount that need to be paid is 13080.this x will be the price over which the customer would be charged 9% tax.hope it helps.

not sure abt language,but i think
say initial pop is 100
So,after 2 year it will be
100*(1.08*1.01)^2 ~= 119

%increase ~ 19%

Let the population of mexico be x
Population after 10% migrated to SA = 0.9x
Population after 10% migrated to America = 0.9x * 0.9 = 0.81x
Population after 10% of the rest migrated to Australia = 0.81x * 0.9 = 0.729x
Let the no of males be a
and females be b
=> a+b = 0.729x
Given that b=a/2
and b = 364500
=> a = 2*364500 = 729000
=> 729000 + 364500 = 0.729x
=> x = 1500000

In a town consisting of three localities A, B and C, the population of the three localities A, B and C are in the ratio 9:8:3. In locality A, 80% of the people are literate, in locality B, 30% of the people are illiterate. If 90% people in locality C are literate, find the percentage literacy in that town. (a) 61.5% (b) 78% (c) 75% (d) None of these

i worked in this way:
let the population be x
9x+8x+3x=100
x=5
A=45,B=40,C=15
then A=80/100*45=36
B=30/100*40=12
C=90/100*15=13.5 approx 13
39/100*100=39%

can u please tell me whether i am right??coz the question paper doesnt contain the answer..thanx in advance
