PhD/FPM (Fellow Programme in Management) 2024

Is it mandatory to present a research proposal in FPM interviews ?

Dear Aspirants,

This is Rishikesan Parthiban, a third year FP student from IIM Calcutta. I am writing this post to posit my experiences thus far at IIMC.

Having had a completely tech-oriented background until then, I joined the MIS group at IIMC in 2015 with a strong passion to contribute to knowledge on the use of technology to bring change in people’s lives (but with minimal knowledge about management in general).

My first year at IIMC largely pivoted on learning about the fundamentals of management, with an emphasis on understanding its diverse facets. Although a faction of scholars (within and outside IIMC) believe that the first year coursework (that mostly overlaps with the PGPs) is not so productive, personally, to me it was an invaluable experience. I got to understand the basics of different disciplines within management, which I believe is a pre-requisite to be a well-rounded researcher. Besides, sitting inside the classroom with the PGPs indirectly served as an opportunity for me to understand how they think and solve problems. To me, this in itself is an important experience for any aspiring faculty. I also engaged myself in clubs and other activities besides academics and had enough time to relax.

Are there challenges in clearing the first year coursework? …. Depends….. However, the support structure from the FP (&perhaps PGP) students at IIMC makes sure that no one is left behind. Unlike popular perceptions that IIMC is a ‘quant’ campus, there is a good mix of the so-called ‘quali’ & ‘quanti’ courses in the first year that provide a fair chance to people from all backgrounds to perform. To my knowledge, nearly all the students made it past the first year (some quite easily and others with some effort).

During the summers, besides my project, I got to know more about the community and forged a closer bond with its members. I also got to closely interact with faculty members from different disciplines. To my pleasant surprise, the faculty members I interacted with were incredibly approachable and even treated me as their colleagues on knowing that I am an FP student. Most faculty members are humble and even dine in the staff canteen along with the FP students (including the present director).

The coursework during the second year concerned more on area-specific doctoral level courses. In my second year, I also got a chance to be student representative at IIMC. During this time, as a community, we got to resolve some issues like lack of food in summer for FPs, increase in stipend to match (&exceed) peer IIMs among other things. My experiences in the 2nd year, with the different flexibilities in the coursework, were enriching.

After the coursework, I was encouraged by my faculty to choose topics that I am passionate about and urged to pursue the same, however challenging they may be. Hailing from the south, I found it exacting to do field work in a state like Bengal. The system even offered me Bengali classes & other support structures to help me in that regard.

My research area involves a discovery orientation and action science alignment, where I engage with people in the rural areas in Bengal (who are kind of my co-researchers) and seek to leverage social technologies to contribute to their life and livelihood. Despite core challenges like language issues, cultural differences, difficulties in staying in the field, etc. the system at IIMC has provided me with enough support until now to help me further my research. Looking back, IIMC has provided me with exact kind of dream that I wished to pursue when I applied for the program (though I was unable to articulate it back then, intuitively this is exactly what I wanted to do).

Overall, my three years at IIMC has been more than fulfilling. Yes, there may be a few issues associated infrastructure and other things just like any other institute. But every time the community faced an issue, it has been able to navigate through the same to a fair degree of satisfaction (with the help of the administration). To my knowledge, none of these issues has come in the way of me pursuing my work at IIMC.

Back in 2015, when I was in a dilemma whether to choose IIMC over other (big) IIMs, my well-wishers told me that Calcutta(with its fore-thinkers, etc.) is the place to be when one wants to gauge the difference between knowledge and ‘wisdom’. Three years down the line, I can confidently say that my decision stands justified.

Any updates on IIM Udaipur shortlist and RAT dates.

Hi Guys, I am planning to take up the matter of Interview date clash with Directors of IIM A and IIM Rohtak. If you are also facing this issue, please drop your details in comment below. Individual requests are being turned down but decent numbers may force them to rethink.

Any updates on iim Kashipur. They said they will release the list on 15th. (Today)

IIM Udaipur and XLRI will release shortlists in a couple of days ( spoke to both)

Any updates on IIM Raipur?

Hi Everyone, does anyone have any details about the area-specified tests for OBHRM or Public Policy at IIMB? Has anyone heard anything from last year's applicants?

I just spoke to the FPM admissions office and they only seem to know what's in the admissions document. Not too many more details than that.

Any inputs on this front will really help.

Thanks in advance.
