All the best for IIM I RAT
(Using an anonymous id for obvious reasons)
My classmates and colleagues here at IIM Calcutta have received praise for the initiative they have shown and for the interaction between the aspirants and the students of the fellow program here at IIM Calcutta. This has always been the case about the FP community at IIM Calcutta even before I joined here.
Alas, they are forced to show this initiative since the faculty and administration have completely abdicated their responsibilities towards the students of the fellow program – both present and future. I was impressed by the level of dedication shown by the students when I was applying to answering the queries of the FP aspirants and it was the only factor which influenced my decision to choose pursuing my FP at IIM Calcutta over the other two big IIMs. My purpose of this post is not to malign my institute but to make aware to the aspirants of the large number of issues that are present here and that the faculty/administration refuse to address despite the issues being raised over the years.
1) The number of shortlists this year is 288. This led to some students questioning if there was any shortlisting at all by some of the groups (as can be evidenced by screenshots links to which I have posted below. The students whose number is partially not deleted is an ex-student representative). For reference, the average number of shortlists released in the last 3-4 years was in the range of 110-120.
2) There are a number of infrastructural issues that FP students have to face here at IIM Calcutta. For starters, FP students have to scrounge for food during the summers as none of the hostel messes function during summer (To be fair, the current student representatives have put a lot of fight and it appears that this year, one hostel mess will function during a portion of the summer). One reason the aspirants see a large number of FP students volunteering during the admission process is this (sad but true that because volunteers are provided breakfast and lunch, FP students volunteer in large numbers).
3) Another infrastructural issue is the lack of proper internet facilities. The entire student body suffers due to this but the FP students more so. None of the hostels – be it bachelor accommodation or family hostels has proper internet connectivity.
While the bachelor hostels have fibre optic connectivity, the speeds available are pathetic and the installed Wi-Fi routers do not work. Students try to get around these issues by purchasing their own Wi-Fi routers and connecting them to the LAN but these routers are confiscated in raids (thankfully such frequency of such raids or “room inspections” as they are called has decreased). The logic given against students having their own routers is that the wireless signals of the private routers of the students cancel out the wireless signals of the routers provided by the institute (I am not a network specialist but I smell bullshit here).
The situation in the family hostels is even more pathetic. My classmates in the family hostels have been clamouring for proper internet connectivity. They have written several emails to the authorities requesting fibre optic connectivity but to no avail. They were provided with Airtel 3G routers last calendar year after years of making noise (the interesting thing about these Airtel 3G router – each of them cost about Rs. 4000, have to be plugged in, and as a result are of no use when there is a power cut. I am not sure why the institute did not purchase cheaper data cards/dongles which can be plugged into USB ports or have their own battery. Also, why the institute chose to purchase Airtel routers when it is common knowledge for everyone on campus that Airtel’s network is exceptionally poor here is another mystery.)
4) Water supply – I do not even want to get started on this. One would think that a premier management institute would be manage to provide its students with clean drinking water. Nothing would be farther from the truth. Somehow, the institute purchases new RO machines every year for the hostels but these machines rarely last beyond a year or two. The situation got so bad that provision of drinking water facilities was one of the issues on which elections to the student body were fought (I am not sure whether to laugh or be sad here). Like the point above, I am living in heaven compared to my classmates from the family hostels who have to frequently brave water which is brackish and black. Some of them with a sense of humour have come to call it “saza-e-kalapani”
While these are some of the more crucial issues in my view (there are others like the prevalence of dengue, faculty who are vindictive, etc.) which affect the FP students in particular, you should also consider the broader environment among the student body of the campus. The last two years have seen several students who have been fed up with the system standing up to protest only to either be ignored, demeaned or crushed. Issues like:
(i) The abuse of power by placement representatives
(ii) Sexual harassment complaints against student body members. Most complaints are crushed before they reach the committee against sexual harassment (like the instance where one student council member conspired to quash a complaint against his friend/mentor who was a student council member the previous year). If they do reach the committee, then the female students who are part of the committee receive threatening phone calls/messages from friends of the accused. Or the punishment is non-existent – an apology email to be sent to the batch (without even mentioning why the apology is being sent)
(iii) Widespread abuse of narcotics and illicit substances – this is a proud part of the culture that we have an event every year celebrating it
Several of us (both FP and PGP students) have made attempts to raise these issues in the internal forums or have discussion about how these issues are out of place in an institute of national importance like IIM Calcutta. However, each time we have tried to, we are either met with derision or outright ostracization from the IIMC community.
My aim through this post is not to alarm the aspirants but to let them know the reality as things stand here in IIM Calcutta and to realise that not everything is as hunky dory as my colleagues would like to portray.
P.S. To those who think that I am poking holes at the constructive work that my colleagues are doing and that I am just badmouthing my institute – I have myself been a part of the volunteering like my colleagues for the last 4-5 years. Each year I was hopeful that things would change but now that I have spent so long in the system and as I am getting closer to graduating, I don’t see it happening and I don’t think it will ever. Call me a cynic but this place has made me one.
P.P.S To the moderators, I am not just trying to badmouth an institute with outside information. You can reach out to me and I am prepared to share my credentials assuming you will not divulge them (for fairly obvious reasons)
