Hey everyone!
So I really need some help, I've been thinking and thinking a LOT, but I feel its time to get some external advice.
I've given CAT thrice. First, I scored around 96.9, the second time I scored close to 98. And just when I thought I was getting lucky, I messed it up totally this time and scored something which didn't even come close to what I was expecting after a full yr of effort(early 90s)-- blame it on a horribly conducted CBT CAT!
I was mainly interested in getting through to the IIMs all three times due to which I missed out on applying on other colleges-- a bad decision on hindsight! I attempted XAT last year, again 96ish(There's more to this story on my foolish decisions!)
And now, I have no clue as to what I should do! I've outgrown my job, I'm not going anywhere with it... I don't know whether I should start studying for the entrances again, and even if I do I have no idea how to go about it. I still have a dream of getting into a top b-school, but for now its just a dream :(
There's been a lot of tension at home regarding my future(you know how it is with girls, marriage talk etc). And this 'low' phase has lasted a little too long for me too...
I'd really appreciate it if I could get some good advice as to what to do(I know its a little too much to ask). I really really need a MENTOR at this point of time, and I just don't know where to look. And Pagalguy is the only thing that comes to my head.
Thanks!

I dont know about the mentor part but i would really like to help you out of this.
First of all looking at the previous CAT scores i really do believe that you will score well this time. But this time do appear for more tests like FMS, IIFT, JMET other than CAT and XAT. And if you get through one of the top 15- 20 colleges do get in. And the marraige thing just try to postpone it by 6 more months as then you would have a whole new season of b school exams and once you score well and convince your family that you have got a great oppurtunity, things would be different from your family's side. I really appreciate what you aim for but this time do consider institutes like NITIE, Sp jain, MDI, IIFT, SJMSOM. These are as good as some of the IIMs. Also institutes like XIMB,NMIMS,IMT G, MICA,IMI, TISS etc are a good option for you...
I have a gap of 6 years between my 10 th std and 12th (2nd PUC) completion and I have a gap of several more years between completion of 12th and joining degree. I again have a few backlogs in BBA degree (via distance education from Sikkim Manipal University) which i cleared by losing a year. My aggregate in BBA stands at 65%. I hold a BEC Higher (Business English Certificate) from the University of Cambridge and Have a certificate in Italian and German. I lost so many years because of a lack of motivation to do math in which subjects I failed in 12th and also in degree.
I would hence like to know my CAT exam prospects with which I stand to face good bschools or a company for that matter considering the backlogs and gaps of so many years.
I am better and most comfortable with languages.
Am I eligible to write the CAT and would the IIMs or other top bschools be interested in my profile considering my distance education degree background?
Please help with my queries, thanks
Best Regards

Hi
First of all would like to say , believe in your dreams ,then only people will believe in them, If you truly believe in them , i am sure you can convince your parents regarding your decision. I am sure they can wait for a few more months
Now for the dream of getting into an IIM , I would just say , common go for it once more , you will see many people on pagalguy, who have made it to IIMs after 4-5 attempts,
Have a look at this thread
http://www.pagalguy.com/discussions/all-i-wanted-to-speak-about-cat-25002933
And i am sure you could find a mentor, in that thread as well
As some one as already mentioned , please look into other colleges as well, they are as good as IIMs . And they are equally hard to get in .
So just focus right now on your dream , work hard , analyse your weakness and try optimize your score
All d best , m sure you will make it:)

AFAIK, you aren't eligible for CAT, as it requires minimum 50% in graduation.

Hi guys..
I am in a great confusion regarding my course. Since i am currently pursuing BBA, i dont know how to decide whether i am interested in these areas or not:marketing, finance, HR, travel n hospitality, media et al..
BBA doesnt really teach u everything about a particular subject..Its like, even after completing 2nd year you are the jack of all trades, master of none..
I've two internship opportunities viz., one in online marketing and second in travel planning..what should i go for??
also, i've to choose the internship keeping in mind that this little experience will help me in my future decision of doing mba in a particular field(which also goes undecided).

Rohin,an experience of half a year which I presume 6 months is generally not given much weightage.Workex of 1 year or more is considered as workex.Secondly,if you do not have any liabilities then you can take a break and concentrate on CAT 10.If you are confident and your preparation is good, you can surely get into IIM's.
A gap can always be justified. So concentrate on your CAT prep.
All the best !
hey seniors
im B.Tech 2009 passout. Im currently working in a s/w company and getting around 24k in hand. Im confused between the following options a lot. Please help me chose the correct one as Im just wasting time by not making a quick decision.
1). MBA - I had appeard in CAT 08 and 09 and got around 75-80 percentile in almost all exams. This year if i appear for CAT etc then ill try to analyze my weak areas and try to cover up. The problem is that i need to take a lot of education loan for my MBA. And i would later want to settle in some good PSU. I dont know whether my MBA would help me in that or shall i forget about MBA and concentrate more on PSU exams. If after MBA i opt for PSUs then repaying a huge education loan of 6-8 lacs could be a problem as i would end up paying 15k-20k installments for 5-6 years. My prime days would be spent in repaying the loan only.
2). PSUs - Iv always thought of PSUs as a safe option for life. But now im not in touch with my engg subjects. I think it would take a lot of effort to crack a PSU exam now. But this would have been the best option for me as i want to settle early in life. Its not that i did not study my engg subjects properly during B.Tech, but now it would take gr8 effort to qualify a PSU exam. I think cracking CAT would be easier for me as i already know about many of my weak areas and areas of improvement (since iv given CAT twice).
3). My s/w job - The work that im given is not so great. I dont know abt the future as i wont be gaining any valuable experience with the kind of work im given. Its very difficult to change my work over here.
4). Bank PO - Iv been thinking abt Bank PO also , but most of my frnds have told me that the in-hand salary is around 16k-21k and the work is mostly of clerical nature. People work very hard in PSU banks and are not satisfied with their work. But this could be an easy option as cracking bank PO is not that tough. It would give me early settlement in life but i may be posted to small districts and all. Plus i would go for a job which is paying me less than my current job.
seniors/folks please help me take the correct decision as it could change the course of my life.
thanks and regards
Boss..,other than job security n early settlement..,what r the other driving forces for u to come to a PSU..coz i have been working wid SAIL for 2yrs now n im quitting my job this yr n goin to IITD for my MBA..so let me give u wat it ll be like workin in a PSU..most of PSUs will be in not so city kinda locations n ll be very difficult for a 23yrd guy to live..yeah they r payin nicely(really gud for dat fact) but it wont come widout compromises..remote locations ..no girls(may appear silly but its a serious issue yarr life tho boring)...sycophantacy is the order of the day..n not so fast growth..
If u can live with these things yeah PSU is a gr8 choice..after all who will pay u some 38k for no work or very les work...
PM me for any queries regarding PSU job...

1yr gap I dont think will ruin ur chances...but definitely job acts like a shock absorber n helps u prepare widout much pressure as CAT n odr MBA entrances r more like gambles...so i think having a backup job will help u a lot n helps u prep widout worries..But if u have confidence(U shld have it) that u can n will make it dis yr ..,go ahead...dont waste time searching backups start prep fro CAT-2010..
All d very best...
how a 2nd division score of Btech going to effect a IT job search ..in case one plan to go for job hunt and cat2010 ?
i want to quit the s
oftware job i have at infosys..
kindly suggest any other option in finance, sales etc
i am graduate in B.E. electronics and telecomm..
interested to pursue mba..

personally speaking, I would recommend that you prefer online marketing over travel planning...
online marketing is nothing but an upgraded version of marketing (almost every company now has a website...and there are more countless examples)...while I cannot comment on the packages and profiles..online marketing will definitely help ur career if u take marketing in ur MBA...plus..travel planning would limit u to the tourism and hospitality industry only..

It wont have any bad effect if you are able to explain it properly. Now dont worry about these issues and get on with your preparation.

If u get a good CAT score.. n u have good Acads.. den gap year is not an issue
E1 people have converted IIMs with a Gap year n poor acads(a few of dem i know personally).. u jus need 2 crack d interview
any body on my dilemma man.... that 2nd div
i've got admission in institute of mathematics and applications(IOMA) bhubaneshwar for Masters in Computational Finance(aka Financial Engineering). the course structure is very exciting and completely in tune with my cfa studies(gave level 2 this june)...however i'm skeptical about companies in india giving this course due weightage...only two batches have passed out so far n highest package has been 9.5 lacs offered to just 1 student...i've to report on or b4 21st june to hold on to seat
i've got admit in CCAP as well (CRISIL certified analyst programme) which involves 2 year's internship with crisil + studies at NITIE . at the end crisil would make an offer of atleast 5 lacs....i'm skeptical about both its market acceptance + the problems such an internship would create later on when i go 4 an mba ..it wont b counted as work-ex for sure...i've to send original marksheet by 18th june
i've also got my interview at igidr(msc economics) lined up for 30th june...besides that dse exam is on 26th june...dse/igidr r very-well recognised in corporate world n have an excellent placement record
some1 plz guide me as to the best option for me...
