Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

Hi
My problem
I am an integrated M.Sc Physics 2nd year student, in a pure-science oriented
research-based institute.
Don't wish to make a career in Physics. (I know its late)
Question
Can I do an M.Ba ? obviously I can
I mean will the so called 'good' b-schools first of all even accept my applications, seeing my
bloodily diverse background (already a masters, that too in Physics), given I clear CAT. They
may say I botched in science so I am going for a career shift.

So please assist me, is it really beneficial step??

Just make sure that u can give them a good reason as to why u want to do an MBA and how ll it help u . Thats it . And actually a diverse profile adds to the application value i feel . Just work well for the CAT and get a good percentile . And the rest in on ur GD and PI's . There is no such restrictions that ppl with masters dont get into IIM's . And frnd be sure of ur physics . Ll help in the interview

Cheers .
Hi,

My background is:
Xth (CBSE): 90.8%
XII (CBSE) : 90%
B.Tech - DCE (Delhi College of Engineering) : 67%

Work Ex: Completed 2 Years as Risk Consultant in Deloitte

I plan to enroll for MBA sooner or later, wanted to know should I go for IIM's this year or wait, give GMAT and try for ISB, or any other option?

Please guide on what I should do I should be doing?

Do not restrict your scope. Be wide and open and target the best! If you are interested in doing MBA then you should start trying now. 2 years is good enough experience for Indian B-Schools if you want to go for 2 year Programme. If you are looking to save time and do your MBA in one year then start preparing for GMAT.

If you want to continue with your profile of Risk Management, then you can try certifications in the related field as well.

Hi all,

My elder sister worked in an IT company for a couple of years before doing MBA in Wisconsin University, US(Entrepreneurial Management). She has about 5 months of experience as a financial analyst, but she has resigned it as the pay was not good. Her visa is getting expired and she still hasn't found a job yet. She is in dilemma as to return to India or join another course(an year-long course) and search for job after like 6 months or something. Please advise on this.

how much would she sacrificing in terms of challenging career and salary if she returns to India?

P.S : I don't mean any disrespect to any job-holders India or abroad by asking this. No offense meant, so please advise.
Thank you!

Depends on ur interest man . Apart from that plz mention if u have work ex or not . If u r a fresher then go for any specialisation u like or u think is gonna benefit u more . Finance , operations , HR , IT , anything . There is no restriction as such . But if u have substantial work ex in a particular sector ( around 2 yrs) , then MBA in that sector would be heplful . For information on various specialisations , check some threads here and talk to some seniors of the college .

Cheers

I was also from pure science background (masters in chemistry). Trust me buddy, your diverse background is your advantage. I cleared all of my 7 interviews (except IIMC whr i was wait-listed) and i feel my diverse background helped me.
Having said that, you have to prove yourself in front of them- that u r gud enough and u deserve to get in thr not only coz u score well in CAT but also because u r gud in whtever field u were. And you r not changing field coz u dont like science but to add value to urself.
So buckle up for written, GDPI won't be prob 😃

Guys, I am a 2011 btech passout, with a major in Electronics and instrumentation. I am now working as a sales engineer for a company who deals with test and measuring instruments. I am also preparing for CAT, but the issue is that since my job is marketing, at the end of the day, i come home late, and too tired to study or prepare, and most of the times i miss my CAT class the next day too. I'm worried that I may not be able to perform well in my CAT, and have considered giving up my job too, but im not sure how much good it will do, as i will have no experience, and also, is it okay if i join some institute to teach CET english or quant? i have a GRE of 1440, and am pretty confident i can get in somewhere.will that count as work?
please guys am in a terrible state of mind, help me.

Do you have to choose the specialization now? I think this will happen after first year. By that time you will be able to find out where your interest is and then can select your specialization.

Hi,

I have been working for major IT MNC for the last 3 years. I have plans to do an MBA and I quit last week from my job to concentrate on my MBA - GMAT preparations and work on building my profile for the same. I am currently serving my notice period. I have a couple of offers from major banking companies (technology profile) as well.
I am confused whether I should be taking up these job offers I have in hand immediately or if I should be taking 2-3 months off and prepare and give my GMAT and then join some company? Which one of these would be good for building my profile?

Confused!!!! Please help!!

Thanks!

First of all answer a simple query: Does your sister know what she wants to do in her professional life? She did MBA in Entrepreneurial Management and then went for a job. If she had to do a job then why did she took admission into Entrepreneurial Management - a full blown course. I don't mean to offence her but it is the truth. Your sister should sit and find out what exactly is she looking for. A long-term course or anything is not going to help until and unless she is clear about her goals.

If she returns to India, then they are chances that she finds a good job but it may or may not pay as much as in USA. Risk is at both ends. If she joins a course, then she can buy time to think about her goals and search for job. It is for her and her family to decide what is good for you all. Another course after MBA doesn't make any sense until and unless it is going to help in career advancement and lead you towards your career goals.

First of all why did you quit the job - for preparation or for switching to a new job? If for preparation, then why are you thinking to join? If for a switch, then will you be able to prepare with the job? Think about these and then decide. If you can prepare with the job and score a decent score, then go ahead.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply!

I quit for two reasons:
1. I didn't want to get stuck in the "quicksand" or the viscous cycle in the IT industry. I have given my best in these 3 years - left no stone unturned as far as work is considered, received a lot of appreciations for my work. In fact, they were plans to send me onsite within another 6 months, but all this would mean that I continue giving my best and forget about my MBA aspirations- at least for the next 2-3 years. And the way I have been working, it didn't leave any time for my preparations. The onsite would confuse me further and probably make me regret 10 years later.

2. I figured out that for MBA there are thousands of apps by the major IT MNCs - especially the one im working for and only people who are a class apart would be able to make it in the best of BSchools. Having a good exp of 3 years in this company and then joining the technology side of some bank would be a different as compared to being 4-5 years exp in the same company. At least that is what I believe.

My only confusion is:

In case I take some time off,say about 3 months,..give my GMAT, and then try joining some company, will there be any takers for the same? And then how would I justify the "gap" of 3 months - both for my job interviews as well as MBA applications?

Please help!

Hi,

I think what is more important is that you should score well in GMAT and everything else is secondary. So, go ahead and prepare for GMAT. For justifying the gap, I do not think that they will ask you about it - you can simply say that you were simply taking an off from work. I cannot give you all other valid reasons and justifications that you can give. But believe me there are plenty.

Secondly, if you think that the bank job will not hinder in your preparation then you should join the job. In no case should the job deter you from scoring well in GMAT. Whatever you target should be achieved.

hi,

i have passed out from NIT Allahabad this year itself. I wanna pursue my MBA as soon as possible. I dont think that i will be able to prepare well and give my best shot if i join my job(hyundai motors/capgemini), as there are hardly 3 months remaining for cat and other exams . Right now i am thinking to work in a cousin's company(biscuit manufacturing)(i am from mechanical branch).it's a small start up in my own city.. At the same time prepare well for cat this year. Please suggest whether its a good idea or not?

Also please tell me whether working in a small private ltd. company is a negative point while going for an interview??another question i have is that exp. of mine will be considered as a work exp... right??

Please guys help me.. i know i can do well. bt then the very thought that even after getting calls i might be rejected int the interview because of the above point worries me a lot.....

I don't think that the size of the company will be of any concern specially when you will be having less than a years experience when you go for interviews. Anyways, you will be joining your cousin's concern which you can very well explain and that too to your advantage. So, go ahead and prepare well!
