Thanks ajaygovindg for your advice. I guess now I have made a firm decision of leaving the job and joining family business thereafter.
hello Puys
Preparing and shall be appearing for CAT,XAT,CET,FMS,JMET,SNAP and NMAT this season.
Any other left or the listed above would suffice.??

thats enough
In my opinion second option would be better. Few reasons:
1. B schools are having a trend these days to give profile based calls. And in that there is very little room for IT work-ex guys, because mostly its not because, they want to grow up in the same field that they go for MBA, but to shift completely. In simple language majority go for MBA to run away from IT!B schools are taking this into consideration when they look for a good mix in the batch they select.
2. Working in family business would definitely considered as work ex and can be justified easily, based on the fact that most of the job offers are from IT companies after graduation. Since your interests lie elsewhere i.e. MBA or a managerial role, you can justify your movement to family business saying you wanted to learn the business and get first hand exp before going for MBA. But again you'll have to be careful on the wordings and how you put it across to the interviewer. (This is again debatable because the B schools are also cognizant of the fact that, people show family business work ex, when in fact they have taken year off to prepare for CAT)
3. If you continue in the software company you're currently in, you'll not be able to prepare for CAT. By chance even if you're able to find time to prepare and get a better score next time, you'll be having around 18-22 months of work exp, by the time you join a college in June 2012. But then you might prob have a tough time in the interviews considering point 1, I mentioned above. Being in family business you can probably lend a hand in the business occasionally even when preparing for CAT. So you can continue your work exp after quitting current job at the same time prepare.
4. You could also look into the option of GMAT (if you're quitting current job), if you have the finances for pursuing a foreign MBA. Prep can go in tandem with CAT prep with little extra focus on verbal. This is just optional, if you think you want to widen your options and you can handle the extra effort required for the prep.
BTW how about your academic record - Xth, XIIth and grad, and other extra curricular activities?
These are my personal opinions from a layman's point of view (I don't know your exact situation and other parameters which will affect or influence any decision). Do consult with others also and decide judiciously.
ATB :cheerio:
Edit: If you're dead passionate about doing MBA, then you can also study while working, whatever the situation maybe. I worked for 29 months before joining for MBA, and when I wrote CAT 2009, I had hectic work at office, night shifts, 12-13 hours at office etc. from Aug 2009. In spite of that I found time to attend both AIMCAT's and CL ProcMocks and also do some self prep!!![]()
But I have to admit, it was tough, VERY VERY tough handling it all together.
My academic record:
Xth - 90.67%
XIIth- 87%
B.E.(Pune University) -62.3% (the biggest worry for me!)
Extra curricular -have lotsa prizes in sports (have played district level cricket tournament), inter-college B-plans, Quiz etc. Besides have successfully cleared MTS (Maharshtra Talent Search), Maths Pradnya .

U forgot one more biggie IIFT...the first exam of the season...
that would complete the list...

Xth and XIIth are very good and graduation also not bad. And more than average extra curricular also.
Again IMO you should go with your second plan. But, do consult with others also before you take a final decision.
hello puys,,,,thanks for replying my earlier queries,,,,it really did helped me...
i am facing one more problem,,, after getting rejects in GD/PI from both IIFT and SCMHRD ,, i am a bit shattered regarding my GD/PI capabilities...
i have always had good communication skills and infact at all my workplaces i am known for this particular skill (trained my fellow peers for PI and GD's) .however after these rejects,, have lost confidence... more than that,,,i am not able to understand in which area i should work so as to improve my chances... my interviews were good and i was expecting sure conversions.. my all friends and trainers are surprised that i could not convert my calls...
i think i have a wrong perception of what a good interview is.. .
how should i tackle this?? because of these GD/PI debacles,,, m not feeling encouraged to work hard again for written stages of MBA exams...
what are all the factors that the pannel considers???what should i do to avoid rejection next time?? all these questions are haunting me day and night... because of these rejections,, i am forced to join a job at accenture which i never wanted to do ( coz of my mba fixation )..
and does having work ex in IT firm really help??? i know its stupid to ask this,,, but m having a lots of confusions:drinking::drinking::drinking:
thanks again

with my experience of B-School GDs and PI, communication skill has nothing to do with doing well in any GD. I term GD as Group fights as you need to speak whatever rubbish you can think of
Hi guys I have got into SIBM-p this year and am in a dilemma that whether i should join it or have another try at CAT and other exams.i am a fresher and here is my background
X CBSE 77.6
XII CBSE 71.8
BE CSE 68
extra curriculars are not much impressive
Placed at TCS so probably be working there for work ex
With my current profile i feel that it would be too ambitious to target for IIMs considering the weightage given by them to academics for issuing calls so this year i will be targeting for colleges like MDI, NITIE, IIT B, JBIMS,IIFT and FMS. Here are some of the questions that i need information on to make the final decision so please chip in guys.
1. Is there a significant difference between finance profile offered in SIBM and the above colleges
2. There are too many people with IT experience applying to mba colleges so will 1 year of IT experience carry a negative impact also will it provide any leverage in final placements in a non IT field
3. I have also heard a notion that finance company prefers freshers someone please shed some light on this
4. Will having a low acad significantly impact my chances of getting into any of the above college and does any of them give weightage to acads to calculate the final score
5. What is image of SIBM for finance specialization
also share some other parameter you feel i should be looking at.
please help me guys i dont have much time to decide.
thank you
Mustafa
Hi,
I am a Btech fresher .....i ll be completing my degree in JULY,,,,,,secured 94.2% in CAT this year...I have had a good academic record i.e x, xii ....I want to do MBA in IT so i filled up application form for DTU (Delhi Technological university),and IIIT (Gwalior and Allahabad)...now my question is:
1. Is MBA-IT for a computer engineer, a good option?
2. should i get some work experience before going for a MBA?
3. Are these colleges (Delhi Technological University) ,IIIT (Allahabad and Gwalior ) good for MBA in IT?(I have been looking and asking a lot of students about these colleges but m still not able to get a clear picture).

Career dilemma I am in. Need some good advise. Clueless I am. So here's a short burst about me.
10th 81.6 DPS Mathura Road
12th 87.0 DPS Mathura Road
Grad 3.82/4.0 Cullen College of Engineering, Univ of Houston (Engineering Topper)
First attempt at MBA entrances
CAT 99.34
Calls (whose results awaited): IIM (I,S,RRT),TISS(HRM),MDI,IMT
Converts so far : NMIMS(core),SIBM Pune
Why this Post now?????????????
Just got an offer letter from TCS which needs a reply in a week
CTC only 3.16LPA, entry level role
Should I work and try again for CAT? My doubt is that CAT is so luck based now(exam and selection), as was XAT and MHCET and that the job I have will not challenge me and already feels dead-end, wont even help me in MBA PI's coz its an IT job
Should I deposit fees and pursue an MBA? My doubt is that NM/SIBM is a very good college, but somehow I feel discouraged whenever I even hear a mention of ABCL,XLRI,FMS on whom I missed out. I live 3 kms away from FMS and even though twas my best exam of the season, I couldn't get a call
Where should I deposit my fees? NM or SIBM? I know many factors go into the decision but for me placements is the deciding factor!
Enough of my rambling. Opinions/advice please? :lookround:
Urgently needed :lookround:
Thanks in advance!

No job, No great calls..its a feeling of Disdain!

- High School (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education) - 73.5%

I gave up my job last year September because of office politics and ZERO growth oppurtunities. I thought I'd sit at home and prepare for CAT and other exams rather than wasting 10 hrs of my day @ an unworthy place. Well..I have 7 years of work ex (3.5 years before graduation and 3.5 years after graduation) so thought the even if I dont get through CAT it wont be difficult to get a job again. So I left..appeared for CAT..but got a meagre 83%ile. So no decent calls. I appeared for IRMA as well, cleared and converted it. Now I realise, that 2 years for RM is too much...that too the age I am at. I have another call from Fore IB and waiting for the final result. Now I know that although I have these two colleges - still these are not the colleges I aspire to be in...moreover jobs in rural sector arent well paid. At this stage even after investing 2 years of my life if I dont get monetary satisfaction in the end then whats the point??!! There are two things to MBA - Knowledge and Money - both are necessary. You cant pursue one at the cost of another. Both are imperative. Now family doesnt know a lot about MBA..they do..but they dont know what can happen to me after 2 years in rural sector..and salary I may expect after 2 years.
I realised at this time..learning more while in pursuit of MBA that a 1 year course from a reputed institute like SPjain, IMT, MDI etc is a better option as that will not only offer me Knowlege and Money combo but will also be over in a quick 1 year. Moreover people in that course will have equal experience and age as I have. So I'll be back in the corporate world after just a year.
Another issue is that for some strange and mystifying reason I am not even getting a job. I have tried modifying my resume a number of time..I have 12 my own type resumes saved on my computer - 3 on Naukri.com and 3 on monster. Still no luck. No call! Even when I follow up with the consultants there is nooooo positive response. Many times the Employers tell me that my profile hasnt been shortlisted and when I ask for the feedback they dont share!! Phew..bhai nahi lena to na lo..bata to do..problem kya hai????
I was also thinking that while I get into another job..I will continue enhancing my profile by completing short courses like GARP, PMI, CABM etc..so that good institutes dont hesitate to take me in,
Now as I dont have a job, and have 1 call..my family wants me to join the course.. what I have in my hand. What should I do????

Its good that your aim seems to be correct and not just limited to IIMs which seem to be out of your reach due to past acads...
Rank them as FMS, MDI, NITIE, JBIMS, IITB, IIFT...
I had SIBM-P in 2009...hence my take...
- Yes there is a chasm of difference in terms of company perception for the Fin profile of SIBM relative to FMS, MDI, JBIMS.
- One year IT experience would not set you apart in any manner amongst the hoi polloi once inside an institute. However many companies do tend to ignore this experience completely!
- If you have relevant experience like trading, banking, etc. you end up having a huge fillip in the placement interviews as well as CV shortlists. Other than that, there is no differentiator between a fresher and a work-ex guy as far as Fin is considered.
- Amongst those mentioned, only JBIMS has specific marks allocated for prior acads and 1 marks makes a hell lot of difference :lookround:(It made in my case
) - Its okayish...but not great.
Verdict: Give another try if you have nothing at stake

NOBODY is a lallu here.....have some faith in yourself

You have pretty good academics

Cullen would help your cause once you are in an institute

Plan: Take the job....hope that you would be benched:lookround:
Give the exams another try(without distractions).....getting through your dream college is never an impossible dream....and the biggest bonus would be not to have any regrets in the future!(I had both SIBM and NMIMS in 2009)
Why not ..not pay up...and give it another try
:drinking:
P.S. I had failed to notice TISS. If you get through...be sure whether you would want to be an HRM professional or not...think over it carefully. Keep in mind that its a fantastic place to be in.

The average at IRMA is around Rs 8 LPA, quite a comfortable income. Highest revolves around Rs. 10-11 LPA although only goes to 1 or 2 students. RM does not mean living in a village. It's more about professionally managing NGOs and other organizations engaged directly/indirectly in the rural sector. IRMA has a lot of brand value in the market, since the pedagogy at IRMA involves more practical learning (They have 3 field segments, I think). Many companies want to come for placements at IRMA but not able to because of its policy. Basically the curriculum has general MBA subjects but with some rural management electives. Although the institute wishes otherwise, many people after passing out work in the development sector for some time and then switch over to more general management. At that time, the jump in salary will be at par with other people who have a general management degree. With urban markets getting saturated day by day, the future will be in rural markets as even many corporates are getting interested (Please read "Fortune at the bottom of the pyramid" by C K Prahlad. It may prove to be an interesting read). Selling a product in the rural market needs more effort, innovation etc.
If I were you I would have joined IRMA but unfortunately I couldn't convert my call. 😞

Also is the placement offered by companies to regular MBA people at par with the the ones offered to Exec MBA.
Please advice because i have tried even opening another thread, but of no use:drinking:
According to current scenario what should be done?? Prepare for MBA now for regular or wait and then EX

Dear friends,
m posting this thread so that i can get ur valuable suggestions.
I am 2008 B tech graduate in IT. I had a plan of doing MBA after 3 yrs of experience in Tier-1 IT company. I got placed in Satyam(now Mahindra Satyam) in 3rd yr itself but the company doomed before i cud join. So the company left us in an ordeal. I was thrashed as there were no jobs in the market at that time due to recession. I joined a start up company in Noida at a very low salary that i never expected. Then after working for a year i realised that my plan of doing MBA has doomed, so i started preparing for govt jobs to make myself secure. After 1.5 yr Mahindra satyam called all the placed candidates of 2008 and 2009 together for a final online test in which they cleared only 10% of the candidates. I cleared the test as i was preparing for govt jobs. I joined Mahindra Satyam and worked there for 6 months but in the mean time i cleared SBI PO entrance and got selected. Right now I am working in SBI as PO from past 4 months.
Now, i want to execute my plan of doing MBA but i dont know what are the prospects ahead for a person like me who changed 3 jobs in just 2 yrs and that too in 2 different fields. Now i will join MBA only if i get slot in Top B Schools. Following are my queries--->
Q1) Is MBA in finance a gud option for me after having 2 yrs of exp in SBI and 2 yrs in IT?
Q2)Should i go for MBA in Finance or Masters in Finance what will be the differnce between the two exactly?
Q3)What are the career prospects ahead for me after MBA?
Q4)Should i leave Officer Rank in SBI just for MBA or i should go for Part time MBA?
Q5)Is CAT a better option or GMAT?
I hope that i'll get good suggestions from u people and that will help me to plan accordingly.
Thank You
Saurabh Surendra
