Well, I know its not a big big dilemma or even close to that, but I am annoyed with people judging my profile and telling me different things about my chances of getting calls.
So, I thought I'd put it up in a proper forum and get a few views.

Now, assuming I score a 99.xx percentile, what should my chances be of a call from BLACKIS?
Basically, is it possible?
I would appreciate responses even though this isn't a really pressing issue.
Thank you.
:
I am in very much same position as yours...
looking to go for MBA..
Just DO IT!!!!
but brother whats ur reasoning.... u jus dont take such big decisions without weighin in every aspect!!

Dude..you have a great profile but average academics (acc to IIM standards ofcourse..!!)...but considering the weird criteria of IIMs in the last 2 years, it makes sense to look beyond IIMs....You have more than excellent chances at SP Jain, MDI, Nitie if you score anywhere near 99.XX. These are very uncertain times. You should have your options open. May be it can also happen that past academics are not given weightage in next year's CAT but that is just a speculation....

I have a serious doubt..
should i go for 1-2 mr attempts as i have my heart set just for top 15 B Schools but i dnt have a job in hand n luking to enter into Bank as a PO...??
Is a bank PO work ex considered for MBA in finance in top B Schools?
I have even got 2 NCFM certificates too.. As i want to become a financial Analyst in an Ibank or consultancy..
plzz help me in detail hw to proceed bcz my family is against my idea of not joining a B school like FORE, UBS , NIBM , K.J Somaiya or MIB/MHROD if i convert dem....
But i have my heart set only for IITs , IIMs , MDI , NITIE , FMS, NMIMS , IIFT , XLRI , XIM n SIBM-P.. i dnt wanna go 4 a college below that..
everyone says its a big gamble...
plzz i genuinely need help what should i do n hw should i prepare...

No doubt it's a gamble..but it's worth taking it ... and if you have firm determination to pursue MBA from any of the B-Schools where your heart is ...then trust me you would achieve it certainly 😃
Follow your heart..follow your dream and reach your dream destination !!
Talk to your parents , convince them... secure a job as PO if possible in meantime ... prepare simultaneously for mba entrances and do well and achieve good scores next year to live your dream 😃
And yea, working as PO won't go waste when you apply for finance profiles in B-School.... NCFM certification though strengthen display of inclination towards finance but they are not considered as challenging and value adding certifications... CFA certification is what that will bring the desired value addition to your profile if you want to pursue career in investment banking!
Hope this helps :)

HI guys...
i have a query..i am a b.tech pass out 2010 and currently working with a contractor who works on automation projects of honeywell, Johnson controls, siemens etc.
now i m preparing for CAT 2011 and really hoping to get into a decent institute. now what i want to know is that how can i make this work ex relevant because my employer is just a sub-vendor who works for MN C's. its not fancy. so what paper work should i ask him for to show it as a proof of experience. and most of all is it even considered as work ex?
please help/suggest.
thanks
Dear..use multi quote instead of posting same query multiple times.
You can use multi quote even if the posts you wish to quote lie in different pages. You only need to open those pages in new windows or tabs & then select multi quote.
Now coming back to your query, If you are a full time employee of the sub-vendor of MNCs, then rest assured your work-ex will be considered valid. Also, even if you are not on payroll but work full time, then also your work-ex will be considered valid if you can produce a letter from your contractor stating the nature of work you do. Also a letter on the letter head of the sub-vendor you work for stating the same will be useful. Letter of appreciation from clients on their letter head would also be useful. But remember, don't ever try to generate fake documents in desperation. The mistake can ruin your character for good.
Just a request with humility can work in your favour to get the required documents in support of evidence of your work-ex. Keep copies of salary slips safe with you all the time. A better way would be to have all the necessary documents scanned & saved in your hard disk.
I hope this helps you.
doc26 Saysthank you so much!!
No need to mention, Just clicking the Thank Button at the bottom of a post would be enough...
...just like I have done to your post...

Here u go :
1) yr ranking is correct , NMIMS would be the right choice , not that IMI or GIM are not good , but due to the fact that it has a good location and Mumbai is the Finance Capital of India
2) GMAT and MBA abroad is also an option , but u need to stay focussed for next 3-4 years , which is a little bit difficult since priorities do change over a period of time and u never know what happens in future , also the cost is quite high and u need to ensure that you have a good corpus in next 3-4 years for the MBA abroad
Having said the above , its yr decision now , we can only give our respective opinions , you are the one who has to take a call.....Best of luck

You surely can show it as genuine work-ex if you produce genuine salary slips, & genuine appointment letter. Since, its your family business, it must not be a difficult task.
hello puys,,,,thanks for replying my earlier queries,,,,it really did helped me...
i am facing one more problem,,, after getting rejects in GD/PI from both IIFT and SCMHRD ,, i am a bit shattered regarding my GD/PI capabilities...
i have always had good communication skills and infact at all my workplaces i am known for this particular skill (trained my fellow peers for PI and GD's) .however after these rejects,, have lost confidence... more than that,,,i am not able to understand in which area i should work so as to improve my chances... my interviews were good and i was expecting sure conversions.. my all friends and trainers are surprised that i could not convert my calls...
i think i have a wrong perception of what a good interview is.. .
how should i tackle this?? because of these GD/PI debacles,,, m not feeling encouraged to work hard again for written stages of MBA exams...
what are all the factors that the pannel considers???what should i do to avoid rejection next time?? all these questions are haunting me day and night... because of these rejections,, i am forced to join a job at accenture which i never wanted to do ( coz of my mba fixation )..
thanks again

It is indeed very hard to decipher what goes on in the mind of the panelists. Surely, having good communication skills helps a lot but apart from this, also the panel looks for the reason, "why do you want to do an MBA?". Try and recollect what transpired during the interview, and what answers you gave, were they logical, do you think they sound convincing, I am sure you will get an answer. And then work accordingly and prepare hard for your MBA dreams.

my 20 cents on ur query
1. i absolutely agree with your pref, actually all the collges u have metioned are very good..but if u want to select the one...u know the pref right. dont worry abt residence. dere will be other ppl with u, and many of them experienced onces..so dont worry
2. actually no exp is good or bad for any B-school. u have to justify each and every thing u do. exp in Bank PO does not add brownie pts neither it sheds points. if u can justify ur exp well, u are thru...
all the best

i have a very similar case as shaun....
expt i have 90%ile in CAT and have a job offer from accenture as a ASE
my ques is having a bank PO exp be more valuable than IT exp. (m spl concerned about the current trends of indian b-schools striving for diversity in batch)
Hi Puys,
Need your advice. I gave CAT 2009 without any preparation and secured 60% ile . Gave CAT 2010 with what i can say as 60% efforts and secured 82%ile. I already have 3 years experience in a software MNC GIANT. Am presently getting a salary of 4.5 lpa. Considering that i shift my company, am confident that i would get somewhere around 6.5 lpa. After a year, it would go up to 7 lpa.
Now my question is, should i give CAT 2011? If i decide on this question, probably i will give my 100% this time. I would be having 4 years exp by the time i attend some GD PIs. Would this be considered over exp (I hope not). Would i be doing a good thing by opting for CAT when i already have a good package? Please suggest.
My profile
Xth (CBSE) 72 %
XII 94% :cheerio:
BTECH (CSE) 62%
Work Ex 3 years as a software engineer :cheerio:
Average Extra curriculars
Please let me know if you think anyother options too can be looked at.

Well Your profile is good.
Work - Ex will some how compensate for grads score(Correct me If I am wrong). Work Ex is a + point for you.
About the packages , it depends upon the b school from which your are doing.
Like for example : You can get a call from SPJAIN , profile based & you can take IT in the later stage.
So , if there is no family constraint or any other problem you can go for CAT 11 .
Regarding the GOOD PACKAGE : There is no specific definition for that.
You can go on & on & crack the top 10 B school . Then that will surely help in increasing the package.
Hope it helped.
Folks, right now I am working in a reputed software company. Gave cat-10 , got 94.xx percentile. Presently, i am stuck up with 2 ideas- The first one - to continue with the job and prepare for the cat simultaneously (which i am finding very difficult to do). The second one being, leave the job after a couple of months or so and slog for the cat.
Now, i know that the second thought has been induced by many puys in the previous pages and i have been largely enlightened by reading the posts. Just wanted myself to clarify that if i leave the job and after the cat exam join my father in his business , will i be justified in having spent my time fruitfully?
Also, would working in the family business be considered as a work experience?
BTW, i completed my graduation last year (2010) and joined the company in august 2010.

In my opinion second option would be better. Few reasons:
1. B schools are having a trend these days to give profile based calls. And in that there is very little room for IT work-ex guys, because mostly its not because, they want to grow up in the same field that they go for MBA, but to shift completely. In simple language majority go for MBA to run away from IT!
B schools are taking this into consideration when they look for a good mix in the batch they select.2. Working in family business would definitely considered as work ex and can be justified easily, based on the fact that most of the job offers are from IT companies after graduation. Since your interests lie elsewhere i.e. MBA or a managerial role, you can justify your movement to family business saying you wanted to learn the business and get first hand exp before going for MBA. But again you'll have to be careful on the wordings and how you put it across to the interviewer. (This is again debatable because the B schools are also cognizant of the fact that, people show family business work ex, when in fact they have taken year off to prepare for CAT)
3. If you continue in the software company you're currently in, you'll not be able to prepare for CAT. By chance even if you're able to find time to prepare and get a better score next time, you'll be having around 18-22 months of work exp, by the time you join a college in June 2012. But then you might prob have a tough time in the interviews considering point 1, I mentioned above. Being in family business you can probably lend a hand in the business occasionally even when preparing for CAT. So you can continue your work exp after quitting current job at the same time prepare.
4. You could also look into the option of GMAT (if you're quitting current job), if you have the finances for pursuing a foreign MBA. Prep can go in tandem with CAT prep with little extra focus on verbal. This is just optional, if you think you want to widen your options and you can handle the extra effort required for the prep.
BTW how about your academic record - Xth, XIIth and grad, and other extra curricular activities?
These are my personal opinions from a layman's point of view (I don't know your exact situation and other parameters which will affect or influence any decision). Do consult with others also and decide judiciously.
ATB :cheerio:
Edit: If you're dead passionate about doing MBA, then you can also study while working, whatever the situation maybe. I worked for 29 months before joining for MBA, and when I wrote CAT 2009, I had hectic work at office, night shifts, 12-13 hours at office etc. from Aug 2009. In spite of that I found time to attend both AIMCAT's and CL ProcMocks and also do some self prep!!
But I have to admit, it was tough, VERY VERY tough handling it all together.
