Hey puys I have a serious question. If somebody after MBA gets placed in a marketing profile, is it possible to shift to a finance profile after 1 or 2 yrs? If yes, how???

It is possible but frankly speaking would be very difficult, you might have to do additional certification courses like CFA, FRM, etc., you might have to face a salary reduction while shifting, a lesser role also, so all in all much better to pick and choose while in campus itself

Buddy,

6 months back, i was in the same boat in which you are today... i completed engg. in 2008 and electronics and communication engineer as well and worked in IT industry for 18 months... reason for telling the background is that my answer to your state is same as what i used to talk to myself sometime back.

If i would have been in your shoes, then i would have continued job in IT despite not liking it. There are few reasons for this: (1) whenever you switch a job, no matter going from high pressure to low pressure job, you need to work sometime dedicatedly to settle in new office and new environment and hence, i would have lost time which could be used in preparation. (2) my dislike for IT job will keep me motivated for my goal of achieving something better and more respectable and hence even if i face low mock scores, few bad days in preparation journey, i will always remain motivated. (3) IT industry provides me an opportunity to keep enhancing my communication skills and way to interact in corporate world in a much better way than any other industry in general.

Despite all these reasons, if you want to quit the job and get into low pressure job then they could be teaching in any coaching class, small marketing/sales job , any online job like content writing , online marketing etc and may be joining a bank for some smaller role etc... but truly speaking , i dont find any of them as a substitute for IT job and it is never good to go from better to a lower profile job because everything matters in GDPI and you need to justify job switches as well.

Hello... i quit my last company (tcs 3.6L) after 2 months to join another company which is offering me 2L(cause its a startup) starting.. .. but the profile is business development.. so it is more interesting than coding.. and i hated JAVA cause i am an E&TC; engineer... did I harm my chances of getting into top 10 MBA colleges a lot? :(

No.. you did not harm your chances 😃 it is just that you might be asked to give reasons to justify the switch in interview..and if you can do that, then there is no issue 😃

Cheers,
Varun

@Varun

I understood ur point...but problem is that there is hardly any time to prepare for CAT if I continue in this IT industry...bcoz u cannot plan ur preparation....sometimes even in wknds u have to go to ofc....

Can't I give preparation of MBA as an main reason for switching my job....PLzz suggest..

You can give it as a reason.. but it doesn't sound good and do not leave a good impression in my opinion.

Hello,
If price and place is not an issue you can apply to colleges like Welingkar Mumbai- Bangaluru ; NIBM Pune which offer decent placement an their take in is approximately to the score you have mentioned..

i am wondering why is placement or fee is not an issue... these are the two most important parameters that aspirants look at today...i.e. RoI

Neway, sinceu belong to hissar, it would be wise to get an admission in a bschool in delhi probably which can give you the same return as the mumbai one....both in terms of experience and RoI..:cheerio:

Hello, I am a final year mechanical engg student at nit hamirpur. I wish to apply for the top management schools abroad after 3 years of work experience. I am placed in Hero Honda and will most likely be able to secure a job in ernst&young; as well. Out of these two, work experience at which one will be the most helpful while applying for the best B-schools of US.
Is working at a BIG-4 consulting firm better than working at the automobile company?
The pay in both of these is pretty good so that is not a parameter for the decision.
Kindly guide me.
Thanks

Totally depends on your career interests mate 😃 If E&Y; is a big name in consultancy then Hero Honda is also a big name in automobile industry .. and have similar brand value in their respective domains.

B-Schools give weightage to work experience and the experience from company where you worked can be leveraged if the work experience is relevant to the specialization you are aiming to take during MBA from foreign B-Schools. If you are looking for MBA in operations, then Hero Honda's experience will be more beneficial but if you are looking for something like general management then E&Y; experience will be more helpful ... also as per my friends working in E&Y;, there are decent number of finance consultancy projects as well... so you might get chance to enhance your skills in finance skills as well.

At the end of the day, decision depends on your career interests and you need to make the final call depending on it only .

Hope this helps,
Varun

that certainly is very helpful.
Thanks Varun.

Hello PUYs

I graduated in 2009 and after that i had to work in my farm ( mainly coconuts banana and nutmeg ) since then, i had to do this to save my father's farm who couldn stay away from his regular job, so as now i am looking after the farm and i should say i see considerable improvements after i stepped in and the changes made by me,along with four farmers who are employed by me and i enjoy the work at the farm, what i would like to know is, can this be put on an application to colleges as regular work experience?? i mean this is similar to self employment or own business with the business being agriculture right?( as i did look up in pagalguy forums, i came across one person who mentioned about his work in his shop as regular work exp), If yes, kindly help me out filling the application fields such as 'Organisation', 'Designation' 'Nature of Work' etc as the application deadline is 15 December ... Seniors please help me out in this issue as it would help me a great deal.

Thanks a ton in advance.

Do some soul searching as to ' Why MBA ? '

What do you mean by 'Regular MBA for Working Professionals' ?

Doing a two year full time MBA from a premier B-School (selection through CAT/XAT/Other National Level Tests) can do a world of good in terms of long term career growth and opportunities.

You can consider doing Executive MBA once you have a min of two years work.ex although greater than 2 (4-5 yrs) is considered ideal for executive MBA programs.

yes i am currently passing through that phase..
regular mba in the sense they'll conduct classes in eve and weekends..this type of mba is best suited for me..
ya thats true..i have given cat this year and i am preparing hard for cat 2011..but i don want to leave my job for colleges other than top-10 ..

In this highly competitive world, its often said that prepare yourself to the fullest before entering the race ie. The Corporate World..
A question which bothers many students including me during their bachelors is: Is MBA worth after getting a work-experience or directly after completing your bachelors ??
I've heard many experienced people telling that once you start earning and get set into the corporate atmosphere it's too tough to return back to books and start studying in order to complete your MBA degree. So to what extent is it true ??
It wud really be helpful if the experienced guys throw some light on this issue for students like me who are on the verge of completing their bachelors..
