Personal/Career/CAT-job Dilemma Queries : A Repository

posted this in part time MBA thread also, posting again here also as this is also a relevant thread...

I have few queries:

a) Is 3 yr mba evening/part time course ( not correspondence) regarded at par with post graduation, if one wishes to pursue higher education like phd/fpm etc.

b) can probation/GET/Trainee (full time & paid) period be included in work ex as required by few colleges for such courses.

c) as already mentioned a 180 degree career switch is almost impossible by such courses, is it worthy to do a mba in marketing/finance for a person working in operations/IT or vice versa. How does industry rate such courses.

d) which option is more worthy down the line.

(i) 2 yr work ex and 2 yr full time mba
(ii) 2 yr work ex and 3 yr part time mba. ( will work ex be considered as 5 yrs in such a case..?).

Thanks,

i have a simple query n asking this on behalf of my friend.does ma economics via correspondence add any value if one is already pursuing regular mba.
and what would be the career prospects afte mba regulr n ma eco(DL).

MA in Economics will certainly help in long term. Tell ur friend to do it from Delhi University. It will certainly add great value.

hello everyone,
i am having problems developing my reading skills
i still have 2 years before CAT
i am reading from variety of sources since a few months ex.articles ,novels
but still i feel i have a long way to go to become a good reader
i really feel disappointing because of my inability to write long meaningful sentences...it seems like whatever level i can comprehend while reading ,i am not able to input even half of it while writing about an issue/topic
the environment around me is dismal and is not in sync with my aim which demotivates me :-(
is there enough time for me to improve....i haven't been much of a reader since childhood
please suggest me some tips while which can help me improve and gain confidence
thanks

Keep practicing. While writing it is important to effectively communicate. Long sentences are not a necessity.

When you are reading don't think that you have to remember anything or you have to increase your speed. When you are thinking these things then your mind is occupied and you will not be able to concentrate on reading and understanding.

There are techniques to improve reading speed. Search Google for the same.

one more think i wanted to ask...how do i improve my writing skills
should i select a topic i just read in an editorial or does it have to be something about myself and things i see from my perspective
does writing improve with reading or one has to put some extra into it....how can one monitor oneself....how does it work?

Hi Puys...
I had a strange query..hope someone could throw some light on it...
just wanted to know about the certificates that are required for an experienced guy to show at the time of joining in a B-School??
I actually found out that the relieving letter from a company is compulsory to show..But I might not be able to show the relieving letter.. Because our company has a 4 month notice period for freshers and 3 months for laterals. Being a fresher I wont be able to serve the entire notice period since the results of good B schools would be out mostly by April and the classes would begin by June end.
I have my joining letter, pay in slips etc etc. Wouldnt that help??

Any suggestions??

Write about yourself and your perspective. Yes, writing improves with reading. While reading you learn different ways to say something, describing something and opens up your mind to thing differently.

You can start writing a diary. With time you will see an improvement.

Hello frends,

I am in need of some guidance regarding my career decisions. I am a passout from a reputed engineering collg and was working in gulf in the construction industry. I worked for around 10 months but left that job in june of 2009 because of the hectic (12hr/day) work and decided to prepare for CAT, and simultaneously I tried to secure a job in sales/marketing(my area of interest) in the construction industry. The dilemma is that I have not been able to landup a good job. My question is that after I am done with CAT, wud joining back my old company be the right decision at this stage. Or should I try and get any available job in sales/marketing. Will rejoining my old company be a mistake at this moment? My career goals are that after around 3-4 yrs I wish to see myself having done my mba and working in an fmcg in marketing. So wud taking any job in sales will be beneficial for me in the long term or shud I take up a job in my old company and give CAT next yr if I dunt get a decent collg ths yr?

Hi Friends,

I am an embedded systems developer with 6 years of experience. I wrote my GMAT this june and applied to SP Jain for PGPM 2011. I got accepted and I am really happy about it. But, I have got "Operations" as my specialization. I am worried whether coming from an embedded systems background and now getting into operations will impact my career negatively. Will there be companies wanting to accept my profile, during placements ?

Any comments\suggestion\help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi vikas,
Basically in todays world what you need is the best way to market yourself Best amongst others; you have a great work Ex in your prev field.
coming to your query; about negative or positive the first thing that counts is what is your own approach towards it; if you can justify why operation well there would be companies waiting for you :)
Hope this helps
bol.. cheers..

Hello,
Point 1-
Working in a Gulf is much more lucrative in comparison to Sales and Marketing interms of Cash; but make a decision for yourself if you want to pursue a Career in marketing and you want to live with it up the rest of your life then taking up a Marketing/ Sales job is Definitely a Yes..
Point 2
If you intend for a Marketing Major During placement you will have an added advantage if you take up Marketing over the other field as that proves your passion ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
It would also help you out to a great extent for your GD PI :)

Hope this helps a lil wait for seniors to post in too ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Thanks for ur comments hotculture,, i hope othrs post thr comments too shedding some light on the matter.

Why MBA?
this question has been bothering me since a long time ....and everytime i come up with a new perspective of mine....which has been on both sides......the two moods i feel are
1>encourages me to move ahead with zeal and enthusiasm towards my goal
2>forget about it....it isn't meant for you

i am an MBBS graduate currently in my 4th year
one day came onto a thread "MBA after MBBS" on PG while i was searching for career options after my medical degree
the medical life(studies) hasn't been enjoyable for me....though i had a great time making genuine friends for the first time
as i went deep into finding more about what MBA really is.....at points i felt i should back off.....the fears that i faced were
what will my parents say.....what will everyone think.....no one will support me
but the biggest one were "personality" and temperament" issues that feared me the most

its been a couple of months and these are the true answers as to why i want to do an MBA

1.to change my line of work

2.to do something creative and new in life rather than following regular protocol that comes tied with medical profession
3.i have the will to do whatever it takes to achieve my goals (to begin with clearing CAT)

3.this one may sound odd
but since childhood i haven't been much of a social icon; no leadership oriented tasks; no debate competitions under my belt
in fact i have not really been a public interaction based person....to sum up a "shy" fellow
though i have had a fairly good academic record
X-87% XII-86% (CBSE) and a few Olympiad and NTSE cert.
everyone says that one should have these skills to be a manger ,only then he can succeed.
that brings me to the 3rd reason
i aspire to be the person that i am not.....i see it as an opportunity for me to change.
these wont be possible if i stick to what i am doing right now

and
4.i see myself happy on the other side.

i request the experts to comment on my reasons and thoughts

thank you

hey bro...lemme give you my my sister's and her buddies' experiences in dealing with certain dilemmas..
for some apparent reason most of the mbbs guys after 5 and half years tend
to get a wee bit disillusioned about their line of work..
my sister finished her mbbs last year ..and she along with her friends were still pretty confused to whether slog again to do pg in medical which is a logical decision or take a road less travelled..(altho they had no clue where it might lead..)..

but after a lot of introspection.. and serious talks with fellow seniors and docs
(THE MOST IMPORTANT PART..)..she realised it would be really better for her
career in a long term perspective if she pursues pg in medical itself ..(although she was not very gung ho about it..)...nd once she made up her mind..there was no looking back..u probably must be knowin how docs slog..cant beat them in that..
AND fast forward to the here and now....she is right now pursuing her pg in
OPTHA from AIIMS delhi..(wantd radiology..but u knw the cutoffs)...and boy..she gets a pretty hefty stipend per month :wow:while studying (although money is not everything..but it does play a role)..and yeah she's having the time of her life now...and now she realizes the various avenues
available to her in her own field which she never knew existed (get what im talkin now.)...nd yeah..she for sure knows that she made the right decision..

so my 2 cents to you is..
bro...an mba after mbbs sure seems like a maverick choice..but keep in mind...
IT DOES NOT ALWAY PAY TO BE A MAVERICK..AND SOMETIMES THE ROAD WELL TRAVELLED PAYS RICH DIVIDENDS...:)..
it seems it would help if u consult ur fellow seniors ..they will definitely let u know about the various diff options in ur field itself( u can always indulge in collaborative resarch..a part time prof in a nearby medical college.publish papers ...to name a few)....
and trust me if u think only mba makes a leader..
lemme say this ..a senior doc in a hospital who has to multitask and guide their juniors as well..who undertakes no formal mba .is .NO LESS A LEADER than a hot shot corporate guy..
nd to pursue MBA just to change yourself and think of it as a panacea is pretty naive and..think about in a long term perspective..i mean..u know everyone says docs are pretty common and all..but bro ..trust me ..if u really have it in you ..and do a pg in medical from a top notch college..(yeah ..the competition is mindnumbing)..u r second to none..coz the options available to you increases manifold..
so make a wise choice..not based on what u dont want to do..but on what u want to do..(there is a big difference..):D..

but if u genuinely hate ur line of work and get utterly bored..nd feel cloisterd with it..then probably goin on the otherside seems inevitable t..
