[Official] The University of Hong Kong (HKU) MBA Admissions 2025

Hi Friends,

Many applicants of the HKU Full Time MBA programme have certain doubts and queries regarding the MBA programme. I think the below mentioned points will answer most of their queries:
In Education Experience, HKU MBA is ranked 2nd worldwide, ahead of many premier B Schools like Harvard, Kellogs, Wharton etc by the 2007 MBA ranking of Economist (EIU), one of the most respected and trusted MBA Rankings world wide. In the overall ranking the programme got 37th position worldwide...
Rest, it is the only Asian programme in the world to come in the top 50 positions of an MBA Ranking (MBA Ranking of the Economist) consistently for 3 years... Here I would also like to highlight the fact that the Full Time MBA programme of HKU is able to achieve this level of world recognition even when it is a very young programme of only ~ 6 years...

Rest, Please note: In the MBA rankings by Financial Times and Business Week, HKU is never rated because to participate in the MBA rankings of FT and BW, an MBA program must be at least 6 years old and HKU full time MBA being a very young programme will become 6 years old in this year only.

Now, the education experience is given such a high rank because :
1. HKU is one of the very few B Schools in the world to have a partnership with London Business School (LBS) and Columbia Business School (CBS) for a 'compulsory' exchange programme in which the students of HKU spend one full semester with the MBA/EMBA students of LBS/CBS as a part of their curriculum. This provides the students with strong networking and learning opportunities Students who go to LBS are given alumni status of the London Business School (excluding the placement services from LBS). Students who go to CBS are provided with most of the services that are provided to a normal MBA/EMBA student of the B School
2. Programme structure in which students spend 9 months in Hong Kong (one of the top 3 financial hubs in the world), 3 to 4 months either in London or New York (proper Manhattan) and then 2 months in Shanghai hence, providing opportunities of great international exposure
3. Good Faculty Ranked 16th by the Economist 2007 MBA Ranking Worldwide
4. Good exposure of China, one of the biggest economic giants along with Europe/ US
5. A good mix of international students The current batch which has a class size of some 50 students have students from as much as 11 nationalities
6. Average work experience of students is 5-6 years This contributes well towards a mature class room discussion and understanding
7. The MBA programme is a part of one of the most reputed universities worldwide: 'The University of Hong Kong' in short 'HKU'. HKU is the oldest university of Hong Kong and is ranked 18th worldwide by the THES-QS World University Rankings 2007 In other University rankings also HKU always come in the top 100 positions worldwide
8. Small batch size of some 50 students leads to a greater students and faculty interactions
9. Strong research centres focusing on Asian case studies and knowledge
10. Being located in the main campus of University of Hong Kong, the students get full excess to all the facilities of the University Campus ranging from Main Library, Seminars and course enrolment in other University departments, University Festivals, Computer Facilities, Recreation Centres like Restaurants, Sports Complex etc.
11. Accredited by EQUIS
12. Last but not least; the way the reputation of HKU Full Time MBA programme is rising, it is highly commendable Even if it is a very young programme, of just ~ 6 years, it has attained a very respectable position at international level
This was all about the brighter side of the programme
Now, regarding the other side:
1. Now, about the most important part i.e. placements: One can't expect as much luxury and benefits that one receives in premier Indian B Schools where 'On Campus' placements come as a major relief for most of the students. Like in most of the foreign B Schools, in HKU also mostly students have to go for 'Off Campus' placements. One should have good skills in Chinese especially if he/she wants to get a marketing job in Hong Kong...
But, the good news is that initially the number of placement councilors in HKU were just 2 but from this year their no is increased to 5. This increase has come as a major relief for the students during the placements.
2. The ROI (Return on Investment) takes some time ~2-3 years depending on the type of job a person gets as compared to the ROI from a premier Indian B School which takes ~ 1-2 year. This is because the total expenditure of HKU MBA is ~ 22 Lakhs in Indian National Rupees (including everything from fees, food, accomodation, travelling etc) as compared to an Indian B School which is ~ 7 Lakhs Indian National Rupees...
But, the good news is that as the HKU MBA programme is just of 14 months as compared to a conventional 22 month MBA programme of an Indian B School, a person is able to cover the ROI much earlier than expected
Rest, in comparison to a good US or European B School programme, which costs around 35-40 lakhs Indian National Rupees, the net programme expenditure of HKU MBA is quite less: around 22 to 24 lakhs Indian National Rupees. Hence, the ROI from HKU is much faster as compared to the ROI from a programme of a US/ European B School...

Hi Guys, I am new to this thread... Cat spidey thanks for such an informative post, however I have my apprehensions on judging the EIU rankings..

Rankings have been, and will continue to be important. I disagree with blanket statements that "one should choose schools by filtering what is important to them." If the overall ranking methodology is absurd - like EIU's for example - which places Wharton at 21 below HKUST and puts Harvard at 13 - this assertion is plain ridiculous.

It simply implies that the parameters (or interpretation) are chosen by the ranking journalists who have little clue about what is important for rankings. If you were to apply based on EIU's rankings, you would drop Harvard to go to Cranfield ; drop Wharton to go to Hong Kong university and drop Yale or Darden and go to Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School. Even my 9 year old nephew wouldn't agree with that.

Hi mits,
We generally say that XYZ B School is the best in the world and better than most of the other B Schools but I would like to know that actually how we get such a notion and belief about the ranking of that institute while we are having very less knowledge about the course details of a large number of other good MBA programmes worldwide...
Well the answer is: We develop such notions by believing the ranking given to that particular B School by famous and widely accepted MBA rankings like that of The Economist or Financial Times...
So, we say that an XYZ B School is the best in the world by considering the rankings given to that institute by famous MBA Rankings...
But the irony of the situation is that, when these same MBA rankings place some other good B School above that particular XYZ B School, we start questioning the authenticity of such MBA rankings We believes so much in the number one position of that XYZ School (a belief that we have actually developed by constantly noticing the school in the number one position of various MBA Rankings year after year) that when suddenly a new but a good school replaces that old and renowned XYZ School in the rankings we start questioning the authenticity of these MBA Rankings by presenting reasons like: "the ranking journalists who choose various ranking parameters have little clue about what is important for MBA rankings"...
So, interestingly till now when the same ranking journalists were placing Wharton above Hong Kong university of science and technology and Yale or Darden above Vlerick Leuven Gent Management School, we were fine and were believing in what they were saying but when the same journalists ranked these B Schools the other way round, we question their capabilities, methodologies and authenticity

Hi StormRider,

I too have admits frm AIM (leaning towards that)..... and Great Lakes and SP Jain (which i am thinking of passing up on). Can u share when u submitted ur application when you got a call for interview? Just wanted to gauge the time taken for u to get a call after the submission of application.

Cheers!

Hi Cat Spidey,

I did nt mean to offend you, but my saying was that I have aprrehensions (whether justified or not) for the EIU rankings, as far as HKU is concerned its a great University and have come up ranks in a short period of time. Its just that the EIU rankings seems quiet unreliable.

May be we might end up toghether in the HKU class, If I do not get into my other top options..

Strom, congrats... but am not clear whether you have finished your interview or have actually secured admission to HKU ???

Hi Guys,

Went through this thread after hearing about HKU just a few days ago. As I wait for my results from other schools (NUS, HKUST, NTU), would it be worth to apply for HKU at this point of time? Or is it a little too late, considering the number of seats left, time left etc? I suppose there is no official deadline to apply.

Also, can anyone analyse my chances of an interview/final call based on the following profile:

GMAT 650/5.5
4 years IT - soft dev - currently in IBM India
Commerce Graduation
decent extra curriculars

Thanks,
Naveen

Hi naveen,

I feel that if u want to apply for hku mba this year, then u have to apply for the course as soon as possible as some 7-8 Indians are already selected for the programme and the 'time left' is very less...
Rest, the Gmat and work exp averages of the previous class were 670 and 5 years respectively... But, as the school gives due weightage to the overall profile of a candidate, a good SOP can fetch you an interview call...
Rest, good luck for your application process...

Best Regards,
Anupam Gupta

Hi All,

I just now got an admission offer from HKU..... Need your views on the college..... I have 3 yrs 9 months work-exp.... 2 yrs in the field of GIS and the remaining in analytics..... did my graduation from NIT Warangal...... right now working at bangalore..... have secured a 730 in GMAT..... got an interview call from ISB, but failed to convert it (donno y...it went off quite well)..... have been rejected by Insead 30 minutes back..... and NUS has waitlisted my profile ( no interviews till now..... they told they might consider my application in next round).....

so what do u all think I should be doing????

Hi Deep,

Congratulations for the admission offer...
I have posted all the important details of the HKU MBA programme in one of my initial posts... Attaching it here for your ready reference...

Hi cat_spidey,

Thnx for your reply..... i take it that you are going to join HKU this season??? I had gone through your post before, and that helps a lot.... Still, there are two factors that trouble me.
1. There is no data for the placements of HKU. ( Did you get any??? if so, kindly do share)
2. My long-term goal is to work back in India. what sort of a brandname does HKU has in India? Can this be a problem later on?

Hi Deep,

Yes, I am going to join HKU this season...
Rest, I am not having exact placement stats like highest and average pay package etc as the university never reveals such details... For that I feel that the HKU MBA admission office, current students and alumni can give you a better picture... Will send you the contact numbers of some of the HKU alumni/current students through mail...
Rest, if your long term goal is to work back in India then ofcourse a good international experience (both in Hong Kong and in London/ New York) along with the brand name of London Business School/ Columbia Business School and University of Hong Kong will add to your resume and in the long run can help you a lot...
