[Official] Singapore Management University (SMU)

@GMAT_Conquer the 2nd deadline is due right? in july. how is it round 3?
@saurabh231 do you know how many indians have made it yet for 2014?
@winds81 I thought u were considering applying for 2013 now.
Yes,for R2..deadline is in july.
@winds81 I know 3 Indians for sure who have accepted the offer..
@saurabh231 What is the strength of the class at SMU. Can I expect at least 10% would be Indians .

@GMAT_Conquer @SMU_Singapore said:Hi Saurabh,Here are the details that you wanted to knowNumber: 55

Nationalities: Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Myanmar, Vietnam, China, Korea, Japan, India, Nepal, Italy, France, Germany, Russia and USA.International students: around 75%

Please ask SMU_Singapore for the % of Indian students..

@winds81 I think most of your questions are already answered.. I am sry I cant be of much help wrt the number of Indians who have already applied.. Scholarships are possible.. I am a beneficiary myself.. :)

On another note, I personally think you are never too late to apply... I got into SMU in the R3-2012 intake.. I had deferred my admissions to Jan 2014.. My profile is not out of the ordinary.. 690/4years work-ex (with 1yr in a start-up) by the time I join/Indian/IT/Male/Decent acads and Ecs..

fully agree with @saurabh231 .. there is no harm in applying!!!

Thanks for your wishes and I wish @GMAT_Conquer and you the very best let me know if I can help you with anything else :)

i think minimum would be 4 and max 10 indians in a class.

@SMU_Singapore You might have been asked this many times. Is a 1 year program recommended for people who want to change career tracks - say from IT to Corporate Finance . Some industries( Operations,Supply Chain) accept career changers, some don't(IB,VC) .This is where relationship of SMU with potential employers becomes important. How do you help students in their job search, esp.jobs in VC or IB, where prior experience is preferred. Also, with a 1 year program...there won't be any internships.
@GMAT_Conquer : harichids has already answered part of your query. Let me respond to the rest of it. Career switch is possible. But it depends a lot on the students. The MBA degree and career services of SMU help, but student has to take a lot of initiative such as participation in networking events, seminars, workshops etc. As you can understand, the school cannot guarantee your a career switch but I can surely give example from past of successful career switches. For example, one of the Indian student, who was a high school teacher is now working in consulting in Shanghai.

@@winds81 : there are no such rules about Indian students in the class. However, being a global school we try to maintain a good diversity of students in a class. Diversity in terms of nationality, background, work-ex etc...

just curious.. is this number 55 the class size of full-time MBA alone or MBA in general (FT+PT)..
@harichids 55 is for FT alone ..

Some questions:

1. Reputation:
- How do you rate SMU MBA's reputation among employers? What kind of companies visit SMU for MBA graduates? Say if NUS was 7 out of 10, how would you rate NTU, SMU and INSEAD?

- How is its reputation among locals in Singapore?

2. Class profile:
- Seems like the average GMAT (640) is on the lower side compared to INSEAD, NUS and NTU, while this is not the only factor, but it does indicate the relative difficulty of getting accepted. Does it mean it's easier to get into SMU compared to the rest?

3. Placements/career:
- What percentage of students get jobs in Singapore that are either through campus placement or through help from career center?
- Do top companies like Facebook, Google, Bain, McKenzie etc.recruit on campus?

4. Quality of education:
- How would you rate professors at SMU?

Also, in general, how easy it is for people to switch careers.

Would be great if someone could shed light on the above!

That is correct.

@MBAgyan2012 To your questions:
1. SMU actually has a very good reputation among local employers, equal if not better than NUS/NTU when it comes to business. Obviously it has a long road ahead internationally. SMU selects its students on a different criteria, and at least from my experience I find the students here to be very different in how they think and approach problems. The SMU office of career services does organize multiple events throughout the year to connect students with employers. There's no magic pill here, its ultimately each student's responsibility to take up the opportunity.
2. SMU's average GMAT scores have actually increased over the years and is over 660 as of today. The program is becoming better known, so I don't believe it is easier to get into SMU than NTU or NUS. Many of my class mates had offers from 2 of the 3. SMU has an express admissions policy which means that a decision will be reached within 3-4 weeks of your application submission, but don't take that as meaning "easy".
3. I wouldn't have information regarding placement from campus or the career center. I can say that the career center is aggressive and you will have a personal counselor to take you through the process. If you are aiming for Bain, McKenzie or other top consulting firms, forget about NUS, NTU or SMU, it's INSEAD all the way!
4. The professors here are indeed some of the best in town. In fact, for many electives, they will fly in professors from abroad (eg. Joel Stern). I can't say the same for every single one, but sure you'll have your bad apples.

@smuguy Thanks a lot, this is indeed helpful.

Can some current or recent students comment on costs outside of tuition? Including living, travel, books, etc, without living too stingily?

Also, does SMU help in loans for international students?

An international student in Singapore spends on average about S$750 to S$2,000 a month on living expenses. This amount varies depending on your individual lifestyle and course of study.

Do you mean loan for Indian students in India or in Singapore?

Quite competitive profile as regards to SMU, and if Singapore is not the geography you are restricted to, then there are many technology specific management programs on offer around the world.
