[Official] Singapore Management University (SMU)

@ivyctor2010 : Actually I have a constraint of location, my wife is pursuing her masters from NTU and probably will do her phD also from the same college.
@ivyctor2010 By the way, which other technology specific colleges you were referring to ?

Makes sense.

Schools such as UCLA Anderson, CMU Tepper, U Texas Mccombs, Indiana Kelley, U of Washington Foster are some schools know for some very good technology management programs and they all feature among top schools in US News and other well-researched rankings.

Hi,I am planning to apply for SMU FT 2014 Jan batch. Work Ex by Jan 2014 will be 5.5 years in IT including 1 year of international experience, GMAT 680. What are my chances in R2 ?
@priyajit007 : You have good years of work-ex. What are your career aspirations? Are you looking for a career switch or want to grow further in your IT career? SMU also has good masters programmes in IT - which bring adequate level of business skills that complement the IT skills. Of course MBA is always the option.
@SMU_Singapore Will SMU be releasing the placement stats of the 2012 batch anytime soon??
@SMU_Singapore Hi, I am interested to get into marketing or consultancy, staying close to technology, that's why MBA. I have also gone through the Masters programmes of SMU, they look very nice to me , but I think if I can ever make a smooth switch from IT to Marketing or Consultancy then MBA is my only option; however I am also considering the MITB courses, need some time to think through it.

@harichids : Office of Career Services (OCS) at SMU measures employment statistics of the graduating class at the 3 month and 6 month periods. For the last batch, the official 3 months after graduation is in mid-April. So expect to have placement stats available sometime after that.

@priyajit007 : Are you considering a switch to FMCG kind of marketing or marketing role in IT (IT products and/or IT services). Though it appears to me that you are talking about former. In that case, let me be very honest with you (and I dont want to disappoint you). With 5+ years of pure play IT experience, it will not be easy to get into a run of the mill FMCG marketing role. Plus, any company in that sector will discard your IT experience and you will be asked to start at the very bottom of the pyramid (entry level role, as your IT experience doesnt bring much value to an FMCG company). The question that you need to ask yourself is "am i ready to accept that". Again with consulting, I am assuming you mean management/business consulting and not IT consulting. Its a different ball game and you sure do understand that. Btw, does your IT experience belong to a specific industry vertical (BFSI/E&U;/Retail etc)?
@SMU_Singapore Yes, it is mainly Telecom domain; Few years of healthcare also included.
@SMU_Singapore I am going to apply for MITB (FS) I found it actually useful for my career in IT, although, as you said MBA is always an option. I need to know, if this course is for IT guys with BFSI background only, because I do not have BFSI background.

@priyajit007 : MITB (FS) has been the definitive programme for people who work in Operations & Technology in the financial services sector as well as IT professionals who wishes to transit into the financial services industry. Through MITB (FS), IT professionals will gain the domain knowledge and technical expertise they need to become technologists in the financial services sector. So you need not worry about the lack of experience in the BFSI vertical. Please see the profiles below of some MITB alumni who had non-BFSI background and are now doing well in their careers

Hi All,

First of all congratulations to those who have got an admit from the SMU MBA program!

I am curious to know whether @SMU_Sinapore and @smuguy are current students at the MBA program or from the Marketing team?

Regarding the placements, I believe @SMU_Singapore mentioned that the OCS measures the statistics only for 3 months post graduation;

I would like to ask whether they have the placement statistics for the previous years say 2010 and 2011 ?

We would like to especially know the number of International students (esp. from India) who found placements in Singapore ? ( This is important because one can find job after returning to India and can boost the overall placement statistics, hence considering the numbers placed in Singapore is important as SMU brand may not be of assistance in the Indian market)

Regarding the academics, I agree that the quality is excellent, but I am not of the same opinion when it comes to the placements at SMU. I believe MBA is much more than just an executive education; Alumni network, Brand, Placements and the overall culture are of equal importance as well...

Thanx

@current_mba Apologize for the delay in response as I was traveling and had limited access. Here are my responses to your queries

>I am curious to know whether @SMU_Sinapore and @smuguy are current students at the MBA program or from the Marketing team?

: I have no clue who is "smuguy". I represent the Office of Post Graduate Professional Programmes of SMU and MBA is one of the programmes that I look after.

>I would like to ask whether they have the placement statistics for the previous years say 2010 and 2011 ?

: Yes we do.

>We would like to especially know the number of International students (esp. from India) who found placements in Singapore ? : We don't believe in "boosting" our placement figures. Most of our MBA students (and other post graduate students as well) get placed in Singapore. Btw, your statement itself is contradictory, if our students can go back to India and find the job (that too a job that can help in boosting the overall placement statistics as you say), then surely we are a considerable brand in India right?

> Regarding the academics, I agree that the quality is excellent, but I am not of the same opinion when it comes to the placements at SMU.

: Why don't you check it our yourself at linkedin to get an idea about the kind of roles that SMU MBAs are playing in the industry.
