I don't know the source question, but by definition:

Square Root(x^2) = |x|

Also, if it is written that x^2 = a^2 implies

x = a or -a

the emphasis is on the symbol '์ฐฝห†ลก'
it denotes the principal square root --> meaning the positive ones .
but conceptually , square root(x^2) = +-x
