selecting 3 from this can be done in 8C3 ways

Very elegant and clear explanation, my explanation would involve a great deal more hand-waving and equation-mongering regardsscrabbler
hahahah....i remember i did that in an interview when i asked "what is your fav subject" i replied "math" and uske baad it was a colossal fiasco.....pata nahi usko laga meine math bola toh mein Aryabhatt hun

ok, no spamming

q) what is the highest power of 12 that divides (5^36 - 1)

1,2,3,4

@meow14A)The integer sequence x1,x2,x3.....is such that x(n+2)=x(n+1)-x(n) for n>=1. Sum of first 1492 terms is 1985 and of frst 1985 terms is 1492. Find sum of first 2007 terms.1)3477 2)986 3)493 4)1491 5)573B)Find no. of terms common in series:S1=1,3,6,9,10,15.......200 termsS2=3,6,9,12,15..........200 terms1)21 2)22 3)132 4)133 5)None of theseA) a b b-a -a -b -b+a a bterms repeating after every 6so sum of every 6 terms is zero..now can be solved further...
B) 3*200=600 In s1 consider the series up to 33*34/2=561. hence 22 terms.

So I really suck at quants & this is no exaggeration.Incase it doesn't disturbs you guys' preparation on this thread..any pointers as to where should I begin for CAT-2013?I am planning to get hold of school NCERT books to clear my concepts.What say?

posted the approach. see above post.

Though starting with NCERT is the best option, but it is almost the end of march....whatever u plan on doing, do it abhi se hi..

rest, kindly post your preparation, strategy (non-quant) queries here: http://www.pagalguy.com/forums/cat-and-related-bschools/official-cat-2013-aspirants-t-88203/p-3610422?page=1

Right maine summation 34 ki jagah 35 liya...my bad.

@DarkHorse25 how did you get to 561...it seems difficult to ascertain what value would break up tp give n(n+1)/2...

Not really...if n(n+1)/2 should be around 600, n(n+1) should be around 1200...so n should be close to root(1200)...

Now if you know 35^2 = 1225 then....34*35 will be just less than 1200 and so 34*35/2 just below 600...think about it!

@meow14 Approximation bhai. you know 30*15 is 450. So 30*31/2 is greater than 450. Add 90 to it - you will get close to 540, now it will be 33*34/2. You will get the desired ans. Try approximating a few values from now on.

I didn't break up to give n(n+1)/2 . rather i considered the max limit,. In s2 max value is 600. then 33* 34/2 =561 In s1 , 33 terms is to be considered. Among these 33 terms only 22 are divisible by 3 , hence common between two series .

yes 34*35/2 =595 jst below 600. but not divisible by 3. u have to consider the numbers that are divisible by 3. so ur ans is wrong.

As x ranges over all real values, what is the maximum value of root [ (x^2−44x+288) × (−x2+100x−2304) ]?
graph has roots at 8,36,64
domain is 8,64
maximum occurs at x=22 and x=50
value = _/(14^3*42) = 196_/3

Haan I know....I counted 35 also, orally karte karte.... Already edited my post! Was just explaining how to find the closest number whose summation is 600...

no actuually u can see that difference between 36-8 and 64-36 is same as graph of this function is nothing but between 8 and 64 it must be symetrical between the two.
had the difference between the roots not be same nothing could be said but here it must be symetrical
