if you plot the graph you'll see that the least value always occurs at 5 (or at the mid value root)
take a smaller case --> |x-1|+|x-2|+|x-3|
the min value would always occur at 2
whereas, in case of even number of roots the min value occurs at any of the mid values, for eg see the following graph for |x-1|+|x-2|+|x-3|+|x-4|
so this is where it comes from, i hope it is clear now...
