Need some Opinions on CFA

hey anybody has any idea about procuring the calculator over the internet, from amazon.co....its being offered at below $40 or even lower including shipping...that makes it below Rs 2000.....and from what i gather, nowhere in india is it offered at such rates...even at the authorised dealer(s)

anybody who has any ideas/experiences???

Hi,

I am planning for CFA Level-1 in June'09. But I want to register for the exam after some hands-on. I got some Schweser material from Internet, but I am interested in official curriculum.

Please let me know what type of material CFA institutes send us , are they CFA institute books available on amazon.com or they are exclusively for CFA candidates.

One CFA institute series book I found on amazon (Quantitive Investment analysis by Richard A Defusco etc), also these books are recommended by CFA institute and mentioned in reference books.
People who received official curriculum, please clarify me ...

I don't have links for Jun'09 material as I would be appearing for Dec'08. But someone had posted it on this forum. Just look around a bit.

No CFA books are available on net. They send you through courier at your home. Other material, you can get on internet. Just to get a feel Schweser is enough. Download 5 books first. Read some of the Economics & FSA.

Don't think about the reference books. Don't ever mention that again. You will understand what I am saying once you go through Schweser + CFA material. Seriously, you don't need it.

All the best.

Hi All,

I am a B.Com Graduate who passed in 2001.
I am currently working with a BPO in Mumbai.
Recently I developed an interest in Finance and am interested in pursuing CFA

I have just 1 question and I guess it has not been asked before.
After passing CFA would I be eligible for a H-1 Visa and work in the US.

I understand that to register for CFA one needs to just have a Graduate degree but I heard that for getting a H-1 Visa one needs 16 years education.
Could any 1 throw some light

.

hi puys. i am planning to take cfa l1 in dec 2009. and i was planning to start studying right now. could someone please tell me if there are books available in the market for cfa. if so, which ones to buy.?
and what is all this stalla and schweser that people are talking about?

Hi,

Since you are planning for Dec'09 you have plenty of time @ your hand... you can start studying now..

You can get books from the following location:

at laxmi zerox centre.
opp mithibai college
Vileparle west
Mumbai
.Mr. Paresh 9819024256
Level 1 notes for Rs 1850/-

The above mentioned are the xerox notes.. So if you have really decided the give the exam then you can register for the exam and CFA will send you there own books... Those books are really good but they are lenghty... But since you have one year's time you can study from CFA notes.. Schweser notes are like preparation notes or digest... which we used to get in schools and colleges.... gives the entire concept in a compressed manner...

It's upto you to which material to choose...

To start with -

I dont have a degree.

I dont have work experience in the relevant sector.

Currently, I am working as a handyman.

However, I must admit that I do have a lot of knowledge in the finance and investment area.
I have read most of the securities books by investors like Benjamin Graham, Phil Fischer, Peter Lynch among others. Books like the intelligent investor, security analysis, Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits, Against the Gods-The Remarkable Story of Risk, etc.

I have also read more specif books on topics such as technical analysis, fundamental analysis, risk management, portfolio management, trading, etc as well.

I also know a lot about the credit market, stock market ,forex, hedge funds, mutual funds, real estate, etc.

However, my question is,
Will it be possible for me to give the CFA exams?
I was hoping to pass the exams as that will certainly get me into some form of employment in the financial sector (please ignore the current conditions), and from there on i can get the charter after 4 years in work.

Regards,

BTW - I am 20 years old. Have no intention of going back to university but want to get into investing and managing money after getting a CFA or other wealth management qualifications. (I was an undergraduate at Aston University, studying BSc Maths with Economics but dropped out due to personal reasons).
I am in the UK.

CFA dosen't ensure that you'll be eligible for any visa, let it be H-1. However, taking CFA will surely enhance your chances of getting into better financial profile, probably you'll find yourself more inclined towards finance after taking up the course.

Given that you've taken CFA level 1 or 2 dosent ensure you a good job, however will provide you an edge over other graduates, and of course your peers.

All the best!

Hi,

You might be having very good knowledge in finance but a degree is must for this program.

So my suggestion to you would be complete your pending graduation and then aim for CFA...

I understand what u mean.

However, is there anyway I can complete a course such as
CeFA
ifs School of Finance :: Certificate for Financial Advisers (CeFA)

or

SIIM (Wealth Management) Programme
SII Masters in Wealth Management (SIIM Wealth Management) ? SIIM Wealth Mangement FAQs ? BPP Financial Services

where I can just enter the exams and which might count as an equivalent to a degree, hence enabling me to enter the CFA programme.

well I guess scheweser is the way to go, but in any case I shall have a comparative look once again at both Stalla and schweser

100 to 200 hours for L1 and L2, don't u think its a little less, I guess maybe thats upto each individual's cup of capabilities and needs....

what I realize from ur post is that the one thing thats good about CFA is that the 3 posts are very much linked to each other, thus the three level effort do get concentrated......

which calculator did u use by the way.....there seems to be a debate between two kinds of calculators....

by the way I just wanted to ask u, that when u have cleared CFA level 2, and maybe with another 1 more year for CFA level 3, don't u think that the value proposition of CFA in terms of brand and knowledge would have far surpassed the value proposition of IIML easily?

Its a debatable topic I guess, coz in terms of openings in finance, even the CFA L2 would have given the same advantage or even more as compared to the PGDBM,
on the other hand the advantage of exposure to variety of companies at a single time that too they coming to u and u not going to them could only be leveraged at an IIM campus, especially the big 4.

So now, how does the CFA L2+ brand IIML spell the situation in your case, how does it give u an edge of other "normal" PGDBM guys who are still a generalist in terms of a concentrated choice towards a career in finance.....

waiting for your reply,
thanks once again Akshat that u take out the time from ur busy MBA schedule to answer our queries, we indeed are thankful.....:smilecol:

Hey all/ Ravi

Choosing the reading material is totally ur choice depending upon ur study style. Schweser is pretty direct in its approach thats y i preferred it over Stalla. Although u should take a decision based on ur considerations only..

For level 1 studied for arnd 200-250 hours, did sample tests and and actually revised the course 3-4 times. Hence i got above 70% in every section. In case of level 2 i had no time whatsoever. So i managed to scrape through somehow in 100 hours. results were worse, with me getting 70+ only in 3 sections. rest all were 50-70%. I was not expecting to pass Level 2. somehow I was lucky. but yes, ideally 200 hours is minimum.

I am using a TI BA II Plus. I dont know abt the professional model but I guess it has more no. of functions. The basic model works fine for me. So u are paying 1000 bucks more for some functions. Check whether they are worth that much or not and take a decision.

As I said CFA is abt breadth not Depth. At a B-School its the exact opposite. So my stint here will add to my knowledge. As fs as value proposition is concerned, CFA tells u abt the techniques, MBA teaches how, when, and why to use the techniques. So one gains fin knowledge thru CFA and decision making skills thru MBA.

As far as differentiating is concerned, out of a batch of 330, there are just 3 students who have cleared Level 2, i.e. less than 1%, so thats where u differentiate. Secondly, till the summers, we are not taught many fin courses, so people have low knowledge in finance. Thats where I can leverage this to get a good summers.

Hope this is a satisfactory response.
More later. Queries invited as usual.

Cheers

Akshat

I think you can do that. A friend of mine took L1 in June 2008 when he had just completed his 4th yr. He is in 5th yr now and will be taking L2 in June 2009.

I think you can email CFAI and get a clear pricture.

Hi Simmy,

As per my knowledge you should be eligible but the best way is as vivek suggested and as you have already written to the institute should clear the picture for you...

The response time from the institute is pretty fast and you can expect the answer of your query pretty soon..
