Hey I have a problem and it will be great if you can help me out. I am from iit kgp enrolled in dual degree program in dept of electronics right now in 4th yr. I want to take cat 08 and pretty sure of getting through it but I have a very poor acadmic background ( cgpa 6.3/10 ) and almost nil internship exp. My interview skills ( better say overall spoken english ) are not even avg.So some friends of mine are suggesting that If I could clear CFA level 1 exam than it can be a good defence for the poor acadmic performance .I am in no position to judge the veracity of their claims and hence asking you as you must be knowing A to Z of all these things. So my question is--- 1. Does this CFA thing counts at iim and if yes then by what proportion? 2.what is the weight of HR part of interview ? Please answer me as soon as possible as I have only 3 more days left to enroll for CFA Exam. Thanks in advance Regards kapil

1.) Yes CFA thing counts but it will be very difficult to clear since only three months left + you are studying at IIT and mid sem and end sem are appraching very fast + you have to prepare for CAT also at the same time I am not sure you will be allowed since you are not in final year of the programme.

Lots of points to make: 1.Taking the CFA in just to impress the IIM interview panel to put it bluntly is quite daft.IIM interviewers are quite experienced and look for maturity in the candidates and taking a long term course just to polish your resume for an IIM interview does not show a lot of maturity. They will undoubtedly grill you on your future plans and the the reasons for doing a CFA and if this is the reason that you are going to provide then you can say goodbye to the IIM seat. 2.To appear for the CFA you need to complete your college education ,since you are in a 5yr course and have done 4 years they may allow you to appear but you need to check up on that. 3.Passing the L1 in the CFA is in no way going to make up for your poor acads at IIT ,academic performance over 5 years will carry far more weightage than passing an exam that requires 2 months of rigorous study. 4.And as they say "There is many a slip between the cup and the lip" ,first of all bag those IIM calls and then start speculating ,with this kind of GPA the way IIM calls are being sent you would most probably fail to get shortlist at IIM B &L; unless you score a 100%ile ,doing a CFA will not show up on your application form. I do not mean to be rude and discouraging but you need to diversify your options than putting all your eggs in the IIM basket

Hi Rajat, I agree that IIMB & L put lot of emphasis on acads but I've seen cases where IIT brand outweighs poor acads provided the applicant should have done extraordinarily well at 10 & 10+2 level... My second point is that CFA will show up on application form of CAT...they ask whether the applicant has gone through any professional course...but I don't know if CFA institute allows prefinal yr student to appear for L1.
Lots of discussion have already been taken place on the roles and profiles where a CFA best fit in the Finance Industry as a whole.... And, More specifically in the Investment Banking and Equity Research Sector.
Now, Can anyone put some insights on "Where does the CFA fits into the BANKING INDUSTRY ?" (Not the I-banking, but the retail banking operations)
I am not very much inclined towards the RETAIL BANKING SECTOR, but curious to know on the propects.

1.In the first case it is not the IIT brand over weighing your poor acads but your extraordinary performance in boards neutralizing your poor performance in undergraduate studies. There are far too many IIT freshers cracking the CAT for the brand name to have too much effect .IIMs have a fixed batch profile in mind. 2.If you read the form carefully you will realize that only the CA course conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants India is counted as a professional course ,you are not allowed to mention any other professional course even if you have completed all 3 levels of the CFA.
PS: CFA institute allows pre final year students to sit for the exam provided they have completed 4 years of formal education ,so the original poser can take the exam in his pre final year since he is in a 5 year course. But students in 4 yr B.Tech or 3 yr B.Com/B.A courses cannot take the exam in their pre final year.
HII.......... to all pgites....well firstly i would like to thank all for such informative discussion on this thread. I have a lil doubts regarding professional exp.of CFA I wanna know whether work ex reqired to get the CFA charter is considered only after completion of 3 levels? If I complete all the 3 levels (say in 3-4 years)simultaneously working in the field of fin. market then will i be eligible to get the charter based on my prev. work exp or depend on the workex. after the completion of third level.

A total cummulative work experience of 4 yrs is required, a part of which may be- (1) Achieved before even registering for L-1 (2) Achived while appearing for L1, L2, or L3 (3) Achived after completion of L3
i.e. just a total work exp. of 4 years is required for the charter designation (of coarse in the relevant domains) ... how you achieved it, when you achieve it is not a constraint at all. ...
Read what CFAI says "Four years of acceptable professional work experience are required for regular membership. An individual must be a regular member to be eligible for the award of the CFA Charter. This experience may be accrued while the candidate is in the CFA Program, after the candidate has passed all three levels of exams, or from previous positions.. more at Work Experience Guidelines"

I bought this Calc from a dealer in Mumbai at Rs. 2,500 /- (after negotiation he gave me a discount of around Rs. 150, as the usual price he quotes is around Rs. 2,650 /- including the home delivery charges .... and with a guarantee of 6 months (or 1 year- just forgot on the term of the guarantee recieved ) ...
Alfa store will give you the same Calc at Rs. 2,200 /- without any gurantee, and without any home delivery.... Moreover, once you are out of their shop, and your Calc gets some techinical faults, then your money is wasted ....
The price which you quoted (i.e. 3580 )is much overvalued.. dont go with that dealer. Contact the dealer I mentioned about at- 9967140062 ( I sincerely hope that mentioning this contact number here is more help to the members than the violation of the forum rules)

You are very correct buddy... The only thing one needs to decide is whether to pay a premium of 300 Rs. over and above the price of 2200 Rs to cover the risk of technical fault.....
Well, if I go by the technical analysis, if the default rate is less than 12% then one should go for 2200 without any guarantee.... Otherwise, it will be wise to pay an extra 300 Rs to cover up that additional risk
I personally felt a good deal shedding extra 300 bucks to cover the product under the gurantee (despite of the fact that the fault rate is not even 1% ) hope you get my point.....

Did u make sure both are the same models. As far as I know, TI BA II Plus costs 2K-2.5K while TI BAII Plus Professional costs 3-3.5K. I guess that is the confusion here. I got my BA II Plus professional from a dealer in Bangalore for 3.4K(including courier charges) and it is in perfect shape.
I have applied for Jun08 CFA L1 centre Kathmandu. Any one else from NCR. As its taking lot of time to go through the material, can anyone tell any institute in NCR region and having feasible charges. Please help.
