Hi,
Not quite sure about the fees for L2 & L3, but they aren't certainly 52,000 bucks. For L1 it is the CFA registration fee that is charged along with the exam fee, so it comes around $1125 or more, depends when you register yourself.
You can't appear for all 3 levels at one shot! You need to clear them 1 by 1.
Any, comments would be really valuable for all CFA aspirants and would lead them to do something more worthwhile with their time and money.
PS : I am a Mechanical Engineer, from BITS, Graduated in July 11'.
Hi,
The statement quoted by the C.A. is very true. He is an experienced person and he has given a very practical advice.
I'd add little but more to that. Work experience is much more superior than any degree. It shows that you are capable of doing it even without a degree/certificate. So if you are getting any work experience or internship, better give it a first preference. You can prepare for CFA along with that job. And it will be a double advantage. When you'll have cleared L2 or L3, you'll be having not only the degree but also work experience combined with it and that can make a difference.
If you're already an MBA (Fin) & you're working in Finance, CFA can make a lot of difference.
Many students opt for CFA in hopes that it will directly land a job in their hand. But this is not the case. There can be exceptions, though. But word of caution is "hope for the best, plan for the worst".
Do go for CFA, but not if you're too desperate to get a job instantly, especially after L1.
P.S. : I am not a CA/CFA or MBA (Fin), but I've gathered this knowledge by asking to many students of IIMs, FMS, CFA professionals & by referring PG Threads!

Thanks Bournejason,
Haven't received an advice more precise than this on the forum. I hope this would help many wandering souls like mine to take firm decision and accepting the consequences that follow.
With your permission, I may quote your advice on the other CFA L1 threads; Thus helping ignorant-unemployed freshers to put their efforts into something more worthwhile at this instant.
I would also request other experienced PUY's to share their knowledge on this issue. If someone has had an experience other than this; Please do post, as it might do us real good.
Regards

Hi,
If you want to gather some basic concepts of Capital Markets, you should read NCFM PDFs. They are free to download. You can get 'em from NSE website. Simultaneously you can start referring newspapers & journals like ET, WSJ, The Economist etc. These things will be good place to start gathering some knowledge & build a 'financial vocabulary' of your own!
You can even refer CFA L1 notes. They'll help you not only to build a solid foundation, but it will be helpful whenever you want o pursue CFA!
Why invest money in such courses when you get it for free
And if you are desperately willing to spend some money on such courses, it is better to invest/trade that capital in Equity Markets. You'll gain not only knowledge, but experience too (and some profits too, if properly traded/invested
) Good Luck

Tyger Saysbut is there any course or certification that wud give me an extra advantage for my recruitments post mba..?
Pardon me but I am not aware of any such course/certification which gives you an extra advantage for recruitments post mba. And as far as I know there isn't any! (You may want to ask this to top tier B-School students.)
But for the sake of knowledge, I'll name a few. Refer the BSE website. They run few short term courses. Find out which one interests you.
You can do one thing, though. Start preparing for CFA L1 from now and appear for L1 while you're in First/Second year of MBA. It may be helpful to you in recruitment. Because the truth is that, at least in this scenario, even CFA isn't enough to give you an extra advantage
This holds true for IIM students too (I got to know this from a student @ IIM-C & IIM-A). You can imagine the situation for others! If you have some work-ex in Finance/Capital Markets, it will be much helpful than any other course or certification. So try if you can get a role at a Brokerage House or wherever you are interested to work. It will show your genuine interest in Finance and that will make a difference.
I hope this helps :)
P.S. : If someone told you to opt for NCFM, beware, you've been misguided 😉 It adds no value (as far as recruitments post MBA are concerned)

Hi All
I completed my B.Tech in Electrical and Electronics and working in industry now. I have a total 3 years experience as of now. I am not satisfied with the growth in industry. Planning to do MBA. My financial background is not good. But want to take risk for growth.
I am in a dilemma whether to do MBA preparing for CAT or do CFA ?? can someone please suggest which option will be better for me??
Hi Guys.. I am a B.com grad and then did my MBA in finance from a good b-school if not ivy league. After that I have been working for 2.5 years now, but not in a finance job. One year in a KPO, then as a functional consultant in IT. I have already cleared L1 in dec.
Now I am not sure doing L2 will help me moving into finance field or should I change my job first and then give L2 next year?? Or doing CFA at all will help me?? Please pour in your thoughts and suggestion!! Need to decide by feb14th

It depends upon u..if ur a commerce background you can easily do it..Schweser notes are very good for CFA..search with ur friends if they have or not..

Hi nil88,
I'll try to response your queries based on the knowledge that I've gathered and what I've heard from CFA guys who've completed L2 or L3.
1) If your college does not offer cfa type profiles, I think the only way to find out such roles is by finding them on your own. Because you'll have to let your employers know that you're a CFA.
This depends on what role you're interested in. Lets say that you want to enter Equity Research then you need to apply to KPO Companies. If you are interested in Credit Research/Credit Ratings, you should apply to CRISIL, ICRA, CARE.
2) From what I've come to know is that L1 doesn't add that much wieghtage that we expect. I got to know this from a guy who cleared his L2 and he did his MBA from NMIMS. He said that there are many guyz with L2 but the job market isn't ready to absorb these many CFAs. So, I guess, if you have a good profile, then L1 can be of some help to land you a 'decent' job. L2 will definitely add value.
I hope this suffices your query, at least up to a certain degree 😃

.Agree with your post in general but contrary to what someone may tell you , CFA L1 is somewhat common but L2 graduates are not enough and L3 being even more difficult to find. Being a CFA L2 grad adds significant value to a CV provided the job is i the field of a equity researcher or a fund management firm.
