Today is the first day I have seriously started researching about doing CFA... So, in that sense am not even a newbie here..but will soon shift my gears and try to appear the Dec 11 L1 exam..Dunno how will I fare along with the MBA but definitely going to try... as that's what matters :)

today i visited a counselor to discuss about CFA....that guy told me that CFA will not lent me a good job unless i m already in finance field or i hav an MBA degree...i m really scared....he said that only CFA will get u nowhere....i m thinking of taking CFA L1 exam this dec...if i pass then i will try to search for jobs....then simultaneously complete L2 & L3 with job and then apply for part time MBA so by the time i complete my 4 yrs of work (required for getting a CHARTER degree) i will also hav an MBA degree (assuming that i pass all the exams in 1st attempt) pls guys help me whether i m on the right path or not as i m really scared after what the counselor said to me....i hav currently given my b.com (banking&insurance;) exam this april

Hi Bhavin. To a small extent what the counselor said is true. Most people in India who pass CFA are in finance side. and most of them who pass are IIT IIM or CAs. soo it makes it easier for them. even i am just a normal degree holder in commerce like you. i graduated this month. i am giving Level 1 this june. Regarding career prospects...a level will take u nowhere..but passing level 3 even without a charter can fetch a lot better jobs than what a just bcom or a normal mba would in india..besides the investment industry is short of talent. Pursuing CFA and then completing MBA would be the perfect mix. what you are doing is perfect. I am following the same path too. But yes again it is very much true that CFA is worthless without an MBA. soo make sure to complement it with an MBA

To make it more simple from a recruiters point of view the salary they are prepared to offer will depend on :

1. Your Work experience ( if not 1 then 2)
2. Your Educational background
3. Your progress in the CFA course

In the above list 1>2 >>>>3 .With nothing to show in points 1 &2 you will not get any decent job till you complete all 3 levels .

For ppl with no workex /relevant workex point 2 becomes important ,then a L1 may land you a decent job -for ex I Banks taking IIT/IIM grads in profiles like Structuring/Equity Research so the hiring decision is based on your educational background and a L1 sets you apart from the pool of IIT/IIM ppl applying nothing more . The L1 in itself will do no wonders.

The L2 may land you with a KPO and L3 in a Front end position with a bank, but by the time you complete L3 you would most probably be in the finance field so point 1 becomes more important.

As regards someone with software exp passing L1 you sal will depend on the kind of role you are looking at .If you go in as a Analyst who needs to program a lot but also needs a little bit of fin knowledge then you command a good salary but if you move into a pure fin role then be prepared to start at the bottom in terms of salary and work profile unless point 2 is very strong.

The bottom line is CFA is not that useful for career changers but more useful for career enhancement . For a career change the oldest and most trusted tool is still the MBA.

Hey Friends

I recently heard about CFA from some of my MBA friends and got interested in it. I am from IT background with 6 years of experience in software development. I want to get into finance domain in the long term career path and wanted to understand if a CFA can help one make a career transition? How easy/difficult is it for someone without a finance background to this course? What additional thing I should look for in case I want to make such a transition?

Any feedback on the above two queries would be really appreciated.

Looking forward to your replies.

Thanks
