Need some Opinions on CFA

Hi Puys,

I am new at Pagalguy.
Planning for MBA(Finance) this year (CAT 2011) , I have 1.8 years of workex in IT rite now.
Heard about CFA lately, and was planning to go for DEC attempt for CFA Level1.
I was wondering that since i am almost new to finance with no educational background or Work-ex in this field , is it possible that you can do CAT preparation and CFA level 1 prep together OR should I go for June attempt.
How much effort does CFA level 1 require?

Thanks

i m planning to take cfa L1 exam this dec......and if i clear this exam i will try for level 2 in june 2012....what r the chances of me clearing L2 exam as i m an average student with 65-70% marks every semister......i m a commerce student and hav studied FRA, protfolio mngmt, eco in b.com (BBI)..........and what r the chances of getting job after clearing level2 as i hav no work experience....and should i go for MBA after clearing level 2 of CFA?

Same question, is there any place of forum on internet where we can meet online?
I am giving CFA in Dec and want to study with people who are aiming, i am engineering and no experience in finance.
I tried to google like "CFA study group", CFA discussion, CFA class virtual.
As far as I know Finbricks and Pristine have uploaded free and open for all videos as a step to develop free study material for all.
But in any case, try to check google search advanced option to know more, like results from last one month on "cfa free class online".

Seniors please guide me on possibility of virtual meeting or things like that for Dec exam 2011.

L2 is not so easy as L1.. you would need to put in a lot of hard work after December to appear for May exam... there is one catch however.. after your L1 exams result take around 50-60 days to be declared..
Just in case you register for L2 before that and suppose you dont make it, then I dont think they'll allow to write L2.. check up if they do..

I am new to the CFA field. Is it advisable to go for the L1 exam in december or should I wait for June 2012. My preparations are nil as of now(bcoz i confirmed that I would be doing it just this week). I am working as a business analyst at Mu Sigma(work hours are a bit tough) and I will also be going for CAT etc. this yr.

With planning of sitting for CAT etc, it is not advisable to aim for December attempt. L1 tests each and every micro concepts. MBA entrances also need some efforts. Going further, the CFA, that should happen on Dec 1st Sunday, might clash with another MBA entrance.

december exam :

why yes ?

If u get admission for MBA next year , u have a chance of sitting for bschool summers with CFA L2 (assuming u clear L1 this dec and L2 next june )

You jus need 250-300 hours for nailing CFA ( having known u personally, hours might come down drastically for u) ..

why no ?

You lose out on FMS exam
If you are guy who cant withstand too much pressure like CAT ,XAT , work ,etc, stay away from CFA ...

My suggestion would be go for CFA if u wish to lose out on FMS exam ..
In economic terms , price of CFA exam is sacrifice of not writing FMS Now its your decision to analyse opportunity cost of choosing of one over another and then decide accordingly

Hi Mohit!

Relax and don't worry much about CFA now. CFA is a graduate course, that is, you must have completed graduation (in our case, engineering). CFA Level 1 is the only level that you can write before completion of graduation, but even for that, I would say that second year engineering is too early.

And... even when you clear all levels, you will get CFA charter only AFTER 4 YEARS OF RELEVANT EXPERIENCE! So...

Explore life, see if you like MBA more or engineering or what kind of life you would like to have. Does your future expectations match with CFA offerings etc... (Too much of gyan... I know, but...)

there is no thumb rule that you have to give CFA.. it is a certification.. and adds to your profile and knowledge..
People do well without writing CFA too!! so it is a personal choice if you want to go for an internationally recognized certification or not..

If u get a placement right frm your MBA b-school (i.e., campus placements), you can expect anything >7LPA ,But if you don't get any placement and you start search then you will most probably get maximum 3LPA, even MBA's from UK get the same in india ....anyway it takes minimum 1.5 yrs to finish all the 3 levels and you need to have 4 yrs of relevant work-ex, before you get CFA charterholder designation.

Hi SGM87

Trust you doing well.

CFA US is really a good course compared to India, this is my personal view...
CFA is well recognised brand in Investment industry in India as well outside India. CFA US added with MBA fin will fetch u one of the best job in investment industry... Many investment firms in India actually hire People who have CFA as well MBA in fin....

If you are really keen to deep dive in finance, CFA is the best course for you in term of knowledge as well Returns

Thanks
