Need some Opinions on CFA

Hi puys, i intend to give my Level 1 in December 2011 and i have the syllabus with me but i haven't officially registered for it yet. I have a few questions:
1- What is the expected last date for registration for Level 1 December exam.
2-If i start preparing from june at the rate for 30-35 hours a week, will that be enough considering i have little or no knowledge of finance? Though, i would add that i absolutely love finance and am ready to put in much more efforts and time to better myself. I like to assume that am a quick learner :)
3-I am bad at quant in general but my DI is decent enough, scored a 65.25 in quant and 96.37 in cat 2010, so, is being strong in quant a pre-requisite to pass CFA or its more on the application side of quant?
4-Considering the above situation, what would be the suggested course of action for me and any customized tips? Would love to hear from CFA level 1 passouts and others.
5-I started using Schweser Level 1 notes for now, what else should i refer to?
6-Will Indian centers open up by june-july? What is the fees for level 1? (sorry but i am a total noob at this)
Also, a few things, am from Pharmaceutical background, I am currently at Mumbai and I dont believe in coaching classes, have always and do believe in self study.

1. 14 September 2011

2. how r u assuming that u love finance without having prior knowledge? 6 months of prep is more than enuf as long as u do it seriously

3. dont worry as long as u have a clear mindset with no fear of nos and an adept in using calci, u hsdnt have a ny probs. just rememeber the formulas and when to apply them.

4. start with schweser notes, see if u r comfy or not and then go ahead and register.

5. cfa study material+ schweser notes shld be sufficient

6. visit https://www.cfainstitute.org/pages/index.aspx

ya indian centers shd be there. and even i believe in self study. ATB

Firstly, thanks a lot vicky, that really helped :)
I dont fear numbers, I just try and do quant a little differently.
I guess, I will have to learn to use a calc,i checked the website of the sellers given on cfa website but couldnt find a way to order it online? Any info about how I could get those in and around mumbai will be very useful.
I know I love finance because, before starting my cat prep I had a demat and trading account through which I used to trade and stuff with my savings and, finance subject as a whole has always fascinated me and I have read a few books in it just to broaden the spectrum of my knowledge. I also happen to know someone who is a hedge fund manager and obverving that person closely feeds into my fascination for finance. Overall, I know I love it and doing cfa will further my dream of getting into finance managing my own hedge fund 😃

bro instead of asking how much time u need start reading schweiser notes and ...after reading 1 book u'll get to know how much time u need to prepare for exam...rather than asking others how much time u need

i read the previous posts of this thread...based on that i thought cfa is difficult for science backgrounds.....so i descided to give dec exam....but now when i read the economic book ...of the cfa i found it interesting and very informative and i enjoyed it lot....and i think i should have gone for june exam.. bcoz iam finding it very easy.......its just voluminious and not difficult for me..............it may or may not be same for u ....read books..and give ur self ur own opinion:cheerio::cheerio:

and i think my 12 class physics cirriculum was more difficult and voluminious than cfa level 1 cirriculum(schweiser notes).....i feel it b coz i never enjoyed physics.....it basiaclly if it is ur interest ...i think 4 months ...every day 3 hrs is more than enough...

but if u don't enjoy the books....than...its a never ending cirriculum

Can anyone tell me what kind of work experience in finance field in India is considered valid by CFA Institute? I'm a BBA fresher and going to appear for L1 in Dec 2011.Any specific job titles would be appreciated!

I am planning for L1 in June 2012. Suppose,i register for that and opt for kathmandu/delhi as exam centre. And if by chance;i get transferred by job to Mumbai in march/april 2012;then can i change my exam centre? What's the last date to change centre? What's the procedure?

please reply via private message if possible.

Hi,

I have 19 months work-ex in an IT MNC. I would be joining NMIMS Mumbai MBA Banking management course this June 2011. I have heard a lot about CFA. I have some questions.

Thanks..

Hi,

Find answers to your question below:

1.Would it be a good addition to my profile ?

A. Considering you will be specializing in Banking field , CFA program can certainly help you but you should be certain how will leverage this very difficult program, as the program is mainly focused on Equity research and investment management, it also covers other areas like bonds, derivatives, economics ,Corp. Governance but considering your banking specialization you need to give a second though as this course would take considerable amount of your free time , on the positive side it is light on the pocket as compared to the MBA, if you study sincerly and if you clear all the 3 levels @ one go then you can very well complete this course in 2.5-2.75 lakhs.

2.Will i get enough time for preparing for CFA exams while doing my MBA?
A. L1 curriculum should be quite similar to your Year 1 of Mba program, but going ahead ie., in the second year you might feel shortage of time.

3.How should i go about timing my exams(which level to give in which month/year)?

A. Well only L1 is held twice a year i.e.,June and Dec., L2 & L3 are held only in December, so you need to decide on the timing , you can start with L1 in Dec'11 but then you will have less than 5 months for L2 preparation..

4.Preparation groups or material.
A. Once you pay the fees the institute would send their material.

Disclosure: I am a Level 3 candidate of the CFA program ,2.7 years of work experience in IT MNC.
I am planning for L1 in June 2012. Suppose,i register for that and opt for kathmandu/delhi as exam centre. And if by chance;i get transferred by job to Mumbai in march/april 2012;then can i change my exam centre? What's the last date to change centre? What's the procedure?

You can ideally change your location before 75 days of the exam , given that the centre to which you want to shift is still vacant !!

CONFIRM it on the program website, as far as I remember it is 75 days !!

The purpose of asking a general opinion was to get a fair idea from peoples perspective and some tips from people who have been in similar situation. Empathy is a wonderful emotion my friend 😃 Also, various sections are of varying difficulty so, a single book will never give an accurate idea as to how much time i would need, when you ask for an estimated time in a public forum, you get estimates considering a variety of experiences(good, bad.. easy, tough) and helps you average it out to set a time target for yourself.

I actually started reading from the notes and read the derivatives part of it and read it all in one go throughout the entire day. Its quite interesting and easy to understand. Well written notes and unlike popular perception, the ethics part from CFA notes was fun to read too.
I am loving this 😁

HI GUyz..
I have few queries..
1.Firstly I dont have an opinion about finance...But i would like to read something on CFA before registering..
SO please recommend something related CFA so that i would check whether i can stick to my prep for 4 months.
2.I am in Manf sector..so to shift to finance, whether CFA will provide the opportunities in India.. to be specific.. CFA charter needs 4 years of investing workex.. will u be able to get job opportunities in India after level 3 so that u could get the charter..
3. Location for CFA 2011: would we have it in India?or if abroad would it be so easy to go?
Can anyone reply to this.. pretty urgent..guyzzzzzzz

Nopes. You must have worked in a designation which is related to finance; just working for a financial services firm would not suffice.

Yes. The way CFA Institute has structured the eligibility criteria is that even an undergrad is eligible to give the CFA level 1 exam.

Hey people, this forum has been really helpful in solving major doubts about the CFA program. One thing I wanted to ask is about calculators, I started studying for CFA Level 1 and plan to appear for it in Dec,2011. I couldn't find anything about the use of the calculators mandated by the CFA Institute. Those who have appeared for it, kindly throw some light into that matter. And one more thing, I plan to register myself by June ending or July. As you guys say, the India centers will open up, I shouldn't have any problems booking a slot by then should I? I mean the taking up of slots isn't on first-cum-first served basis as per registration right?

Hi...yes calculators are very much needed at the time of exam..Specially in the quants and the statistics section and also it is used while calculating NPV,IRR,ROI, Cash Flows and Discounting Rates...So yes it will be needed in the exam..so one must practice well before how to use these financials calculator....
Nd abt the slots availability...u can even register by Aug..then also u will get slots of India...they have many slots available..so dont worry abt that...But register asap to avoid inconvenience
Hope it helps..:lookround:

hi guys..
i m a software engineer currently working in TCS. I m planning to give CFA 1 exam in December2011. I don't have much intrest in software line dats why i want to switch to finance line as i av relatively much more intrest in this.

My query is :1. what is the pay package i can expect aftr giving both CFA1 and CFA2?

2. will my IT experience be of any use in getting job after doing CFA?

3. i dont want to do MBA. Will clearing all three levels of CFA is equally valuable doing MBA...?

plzzzzzz reply....
thanks in advance...

Received my admit card just now..My centre is:-

India Expo Centre
Hall 4
Plot 23-29 Knowledge Park II
Gautam Budh Nagar
Greater Noida 201306 (U.P.)
INDIA

Anybody for the same???:lookround:

I had a question-
What role wud CFA play in the following career profiles-
1- IB
2- General stock market investment
3- Broking
Can I expect job opportunities just after CFA-1 or do you have to complete all 3 levels b4 u can expect any job opportunities.
