Need some Opinions on CFA

Hello All,

Has any one tried registering for CFA with a Debit Card.
I have seen people asking questions however has any one actually tried using it? and what were the results?
I have an HDFC Silver card with only a 15k limit :(

Could some one please respond to the below query?

Thanks Neetal on the info........... Attended their demo class yesterday and found it to be good...... especially the tricky problems covered at the end....... I am going in for their Intensive course starting 9th April..... Wat abt you?

I do not know about institutes in Hyderabad but I am from Bangalore and yesterday attended a free online demo for the intensive cfa course offered by RPV Learning - Transforming Words to Knowledge. The tricks and fundamentals covered by the faculty were impressive. Has anyone heard of them? They seem to have another demo on sunday. Planning to enroll for the intensive course for June 2011 exams.

Hi puys,

I want to know one thing. I'm an engineer and do not have any background in finance as such. I do plan on working in the finance sector once I finish the CFA program. Could somebody please tell me what is the time limit for claiming the CFA charter after completing the CFA program i.e. after clearing all the three levels? Will it be possible for me to get the CFA charter after, say, 5-6 years of clearing all the three levels?

Hello everyone,

I really need some help - i am not able to decide on whether I should give CFA exam or not - I have registered for the June 2011 L1 - the call centre told me that I can pay the fees till upto 30 days from the date of registration. So that is fine - it gives me about 2 months now. but i still have not decided. Please help me with this indecision.

Some points about me:
1. I have 6 years exp in IT - i have got some IIM calls this year - interviews were fine - waiting for the results.
2. After the last interview got over I got some enlightenment about CFA (followed this thread, went through these investopedia pages:
An Introduction To The CFA Designation
A Look At CFA Job Opportunities
So, You Want To Earn Your CFA?
An Error Occurred Setting Your User Cookie
Financial Certification Exams and Professional Education
The Best Designation For Your Financial Education: CFA, MBA Or Both?

and also inquired about how it can help me in my field of interest - finance). My interest in finance has developed over a period of time and i find equity investing to be very interesting. every month I invest a considerable amount of my salary in stocks, and I am always on the lookout for more information in the field.

3. I also think it is important to run a business of my own, since it is the best way to make sure that i pump enough money to my investments. I find the idea of entrepreneurship very thought provoking, and that is one of the chief reasons why I want to do an MBA after such a long work-ex - to gain valuable insights.

4. I found from many seniors at IIMs that CFA is important to add value to your profile, get the knowledge and to get you a good job. In the short term, the CFA seems to be important, considering that after 6 years of IT, I will need to have something that distinguishes me/makes me at par from/with the others. I heard that its imp for summers too.

5.I came to know that the learnings (wrto the L1 material) are pretty much all got while doing MBA. What really influences/intrigues me is the fact that CFA is something to add to your profile/resume for people to take you more seriously for a job. But i feel that it may not be that necessary for me since I do not want to work for someone else unless there is a need (like a mercenary). Also, I realized that just doing one level is not enough - I need to complete all three levels to really make a serious case for myself. So, it is important to think from the point of view of doing all the three levels - I have never thought like that.

So you can understand the cobweb in my mind.

My biggest problem seems to be the fact that I am not really sure about how the future may unfold:
1. I may not feel that strongly about entrepreneurship later, so in that case CFA might be a good option.
2. I may even have to work for some time - considering the loan that I have to take for an MBA.
3. I can even not work after MBA if the 2 years give me enough reasons to introspect, find like minded people, get guidance from professors, etc.

In this situation, since I do not know how the future may unfold, what can you suggest that I do at the moment to make sure that I do not regret the decision that I am taking now - Can i at least give L1 (if i decide to give L1, I am reasonably sure that I can make it after 2 months of preparation), or should I be adamant about my long term and work towards it?
Thanks in advance

I too have enrolled for the intensive preparation course.

@ the guy
I have always believed that everyone wants to become an entrepreneur someday...But do you know what keeps majority of them from becoming one?
It's simply that they keep waiting for the right time till the end...So if your planning to be run your own business, don't worry bat CFA
Start thinking about your plans, your investments, get to know more about the domain your planning to venture into, start looking for like minded people...
My humble opinion is CFA would only complicate things for you at this point of time

Hi,

A few doubts,please help

I am a B.com graduate.I am planning to take Cfa level1 this december.
so my queries are:

1. Normally how many chances will be taken by a student to clear the level1?
2. How much will it cost overall?
3. How many years will it take to complete all three levels, normally?
4. Will we get job after completing the three levels?
5. How can we prepare for the exam .Is there any coaching institutes?
6. Is the cfa globally recognized?
7. Which areas are generally covered for the entrance of cfa.Is it like cat?
8. Is this course comparitively an easy one when compared to other related courses like MBA,CA etc?
9. And one more,Is it true that there is no exam centers in India?

Other than you, it doesn't seem anyone else can answer if you should take CFA.

For the generics
Just L 1 would not help you get a good summers in finance, that you have 6 years IT work x. Atleast L 2 is required. But again to clear L 2, you must clear L 1 first. Most important factor is how your peer group profile is.
You need to sit back and think on all of these factors, placements in short term (Summers), placements in long term (Finals), how CFA would help you in your subjects in MBA, Does it make your profile look significantly different (depends on how your profile looks without CFA), does CFA align with your long term and short term plans and a lot of other things.
Last word, on Entrepreneurship - Generally people take it up after a few years of experience.
So take your call on based on all of these factors.
If you have specific queries PM me back

Urgent HELP!!!
Last month I applied for CFA level 1 Dec 2011. I got all the study material and everything, but almost after a month i got a shocker.
I received a mail saying my application has been denied because the disclosure i have made in response to Ques #3 in Professional
conduct Inquiry form is inconsistent/not acceptable.
By mistake I ticked the yes check box for ques# 3 while filling the form. I have never been involved in any unethical or suspicious behaviour and
it was a sheer mistake that i clicked the Yes checkbox.
Now they say if I have a reason i can appeal to review my application withing 20 days.
They have very strictly mentioned I can appeal only once and if its rejected i cant do anything.
So please can any seniors or anyone who faced such issue can guide me regarding this. What process I need to follow.
How to file a appeal?? Is there any formal way or just a mail would suffice??
Dont want to make any mistake now. Any help would be deeply appreciated.
Thanks in advance

3.How should i go about timing my exams(which level to give in which month/year)?
4.Preparation groups or material.

PS- My financial knowledge is almost zero.

Well I think no one who is seeing your doubt may have faced this situation. Even I have not faced this.
However, I have interacted with their customer care through phone as well as email, and I can definitely say that they are helpful and professional. So you just make sure that this time you have everything in place and explain yourself clearly. I am sure there will be no hassles/rejection.

All the best!

Hi! I have a query regarding my career

I am presently working as a branch manager in a public sector bank. I have over 10 years exp in banking at various level. Now I want to do something more. As far as I think I have two options:

1) Go to any good B-School like IIMs or ISB or XLRI for 1 year MBA
2) Do MBA by correspondence from any good institute like Symbiosis and at the same time do CFA

Which is better or is there any other option for me - please advise.

Thank you all.
