Need some Opinions on CFA

Thanx Mitesh

Thanks a lot man :)

phew, thats a load of my mind :D

another question .. does completing your CA inter also count as another year??
just curious

Hey KJpacino

CA course has a total different outlook. There are no year or level. Every stage is different. There are three stage in CA course- 1st CPT (which is an entrance exam for CA course & not the actual course) 2nd CA-IPCC this is where you actually start learning about the concepts of Accouting,Economics & other subjects like wise & now you are actually pursuing/started your CA course but i catch is that after the completion of IPCC you can get a good job & may never have to do CA-Final (off course you won't be a Member of the ICAI until you complete CA-Final)
3rd stage is CA-Final the father of CA course as its really tough (passing percentage 4%)after the completion of CA-Final you get your CA degree & membership with ICAI.

First up - This is one rocking forum with some invaluable info.

I have about 6 years of work experience in an IB (Mumbai),Operations dept
Salary in the 5 - 6 bracket.

Of late I have been contemplating on doing CFA partly for the improved job prospects( I hear the guys in the research dept make a lot more than me).
and partly for the sheer intellectual challenge, which for some reason feels refreshing.

What do you guys thing ? Should I go for it.
Will it vastly improve my salary ??

Hello Puys

I have a query: "Can one withdraw from the L1 CFA which is to be held in December? If yes will there be any kind of refund of fees?"

Cheers!!
Siddharth

HI Sid,

Sorry ! There is no provision for refund of fees ! Although you can withdraw, I see no reason ! Go out there and have fun on exam day !

Cheers,
Happyguy

i don't see that happening without an mba from iims or the likes.

they are right.get the mba first.

hi, i am mark & i have done BBA(B&I;) from GGSIPU ,
MAHARAJA SURAJMAL COLLEGE wid 65% , i am currently working in
Barclays shared services in new delhi as a financial sanctions (its not a core finance job ) officer from the last 6 months, i have always wanted to be an investment baker & have gathered a lot of knowledge of investments
i want to join a reputed IB in 2-3 years time at all cost.
i have two major options:
1.work in research profile in a good KPO like capital iq/copal with CFA.
2.work in a local brokerage firm / kpo in mumbai wid CFA.

& i plan to do master in finance/MBA from a top b-school in USA in 3-4 years , lastly site like margersandacquasition.com advice dat CFA/FRM will not give an edge in joining IBs what do u think?? plz help......

i'm looking for an honest opinion about doing CFA while working in an IT Company. is it really tough for a guy with an engg background ?.. Studying two hours everyday for four or five months is enuff??

amen!
CFA would help you to gain immense knowledge provided you put in that effort. It would help you in your work as well.
Now when you apply to good b schools, they would value your work z along with CFA.
Even their in academics you would find it easy to comprehend the concepts during your Masters program which would result in better placements.
Hope your doubts are put to rest

try for bfsi tech...business analysis(difficult with 0 work exp). it is a relevant exp atleast for the frm charter
Ok, here's my story. I'm in my 3rd year of engineering right now and I'll take the CFA L1 in coming June. My ideal plan is to get into a good bschool and do an MBA straight after my engineering alongwith CFA. But if I don't get into a good bschool, I'll have one year at my disposal before my second attempt at CAT. Now, considering this scenario, being from an engineering field, I'll land up with a technical job through campus. Since a CFA charter requires you to have a 4 years work experience in a RELEVANT field, doing a technical job as a software developer won't add up to anything.
So what options do I have after I'm done with my engineering to make a career switch? Does CFA level 1 alone have any job prospects in India or outside?
I'll either ways get work experience be it a technical job or finance related, but something related to finance will make more sense.

how about take the job but keep trying. although i assure you with my 15~ months of such job hunts without an mba,it is impossible to get into. ask me,i work in an american bank's tech dept and still not thinking of getting a core fin job without an mba.
Hey Puys,

I've been lurking around this forums for quite a while. First of i want to thank all those who've been helping others and guiding them in this thread. Its a great thing your all doing and it doesnt go unnoticed. Now to the matter at hand . I'm a Mechanical Engineer, I graduated this year during May. My future plans at the moment are to work for 2 to three years and then pursue a Mba in finance. I'm also planning to clear my level 1 and 2 during this period that i work. Recently i've been offered a position in this big company in the gulf . This company posesses many divisions namely construction equipment , Engineering equipment , Electronics and Automobiles (Range rover , Jaguar etc) and their quite big here. The problem is the position they've offered me is in the sales side, as a junior sales executive. Right now i'm in a quite a dilemma whether to accept the job offer or not. On one hand the incentives are good ( accomodation , and a company car) but i dont know if this work experience would be considered as valid and usefull experience later on when i apply for mba finance. I kindly request those of you who more job experience and knowledge than me to kindly guide me. I currently confused if i should either refuse the offer and apply elsewhere or accept the offer work for 2 years and then shift to the finance domain after completing my 2 levels of my cfa ( That is if i can get a job after 2 levels of cfa ). So ya kindly help me out guys.

Yours
Karthik

Hi,

I have around 2 years of IT experience with more than 6 months of onsite experience.( I am still in US) I am planning to take CFA L1 in june 2011.

I want to pursue MBA in finance in 2012 hoping that CFA will help me in improving my profile(IT background). Not sure whether I am headed in right direction.

Need some opinion from fellow puys.

Is it possible to get at least an entry level job in a reputed bank or finance firm with a level 1 certificate??
