PS : my profile , in case u need it 4 checking eligiblity criteria -> 10th-81 12th-78 BE-62 (aggr) , no workex
CAT is very very very different from CFA. For CFA, one has to study accounting, equity, bonds etc. (CFA institutes will send u the study material when you register. You can also study from Schweser's notes. You might also get second hand notes/CFA books).
There is no preference. CFA is not like a traditional degree or classroom course. There are no interviews etc where the preference criterion steps in.
I would strongly recommend that you go through this thread (atleast the first 6-7 pages) carefully.
ther is no entrance. directly you can register for level 1 course. eligibility is graduation.
salary depends from person to person. good pay is given in U.S. equal treatment all over the world.
preparing during job is difficult. but if one is able to put some 300-400 hours studying i personally feel shud clear level 1. level 2 is li'l vast and requires lot of dedication.
career is way better than mba finance.
icfai is not that renowned all over and holds no firm base.
go for US cfa.
i personally think engineers can do better in finance field just by learning few concepts like accounting which they are not in touch with.
engineers are way better in grasping quants and economics.
wat say?
first of all :- in india CFA career is not better than MBA finance CFA only helps improve the chances but cant assure u a placement with an I-Bank or a research firm.. It will only help pitch for yourself in the interview.. However I banks require mba from top tier (IIM and likes). For equity research Indian and other MNC brokerages require prior financial valuation modelling experience.. or u may get a job of an analyst after completing level 3 which economics or B.com grad easily get.... to sum up if i are an engineer u should go for MBA+CFA for better job prospects in financial sector....
P.S. about that thing engineers do better..... well u will find many successful B.TECH turned MBAs in india and it is unfortuante that i find people with mba degrees in India (from the best of the best) with no understanding of common sensical economics. Its just , answer and in depth whys and blank. anyway, this is not the place so let it be....

buddy as i can see u are preparing for CAT and u have a craving for capital market CFA+ MBA is best option..... its going to be rigorous but it will payoff later.... about average salary for a CFA in india , after completing CFA level 3, u will get the jobs of portfolio analyst or financial analyst with starting packages around 3-5 lacs but since u are an engineering grad , u should not bank upon just CFA , because CFA will take 3 years and till then finding a job in capital market is not going to be easy.... so best option for u is MBA(from a reputed school) +CFA....

Hi Sagar, i will agree with what Mohit said, a MBA from reputted college with CFA will help you achieve your goal. But as he pointed out it will afettr 3 years and i will suggest you should have some plans for the intermediate periods too. So my point is you should also do some small time courses in capital markets which will build your base and also show in teh interview for MBA as well as summers that you are serious about the profile.

dont go for any classroom courses along with MBA..that will be a big mistake..
I've heard that there's not much scope for cfa's in India. They have good future in the US but not India. Is it 2ru? Can someone throw some light on it?

Nah not fully true.
in india mainly finance work is handled by CAs. but looking at the bigger picture investment banking hire proper finance professional like CFA. the bank and all other financial instis hire cfas.
though i am not sure abt sector other then finance. CAs are nowadays doing CFAs. i have seen 3 ppl arnd me.
Hi Guys, I am about to complete my CA and CFA (USA Institute). I have worked for 3 years in research firm. Would like to do an MBA. Let me know if this will be a good option or not.

True with workex of 3 years and CA +CFA, it will be really pity if you are not doing MBA from a premier B-school. Also not much value will be added by other B-schools to a person of our calibre.

i banking jobs are not the prerogative of premier b schools passouts...... by all odds students from premier b schools have an edge over students of other b schools because of campus placements (companies like goldman sachs , mckinsey visit campus of these schools to recruit) but after 3-4 years it is your work that counts even if u are from IFMR or any other B school from this league....
P.S i know a graduate of Fore school who is working as an associate with JP Morgan and he started working with an equity research co. ........ so buddy just work hard and Stop thinking like this, else you'll limit your own performance... ATB:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

cfa is all about analysing the stocks and investing.......what ur mba -ib has relative to it you must be knowing or would come to know.....only do cfa if you are intrested in stocks and can spend time thinking and reading lots of stuff regarding stocks as your passion not bcz you want high salary......it will not pay you then......rather do your mba-ib with full dedication and then see whether you need cfa or is it applicable in your field.rest its your wish......
