a telecom grad with no prior exposure to finance + cfa? to me it doesnt seem like a good combination. now if u wanna do mba in finance later, then doing cfa now will be awesome but it might be a bit difficult for u without having any finance knowledge, 1 of my frnds struggled a lot for his cfa bcas he dint have any prior fin knowledge. but the point here is if u wanna career in fin u cant just do cfa and leave it there, u need to do an mba in finance or an ms in finance or something on similar lines

I would say that it depends on ur interest level in finance..if u find stock markets etc etc interesting, you should go for CFA..
level 1 starts with the basics, so though you might be unfamiliar with finance, with some effort a Btech can definitely clear it...

if you're not confident about ur decision to write CFA, you can begin by downloading schweser CFA notes and going through them..do not care about the basics since, L-1 course material starts right from the basics of accounting (balance sheets, P&L; statements etc)...you can do this by august..going through the notes will tell you if ur genuinely interested (please do not do CFA if you dont find finance interesting, oherwise it will get difficult later)..and if you would be able to clear the dec exams (assuming that one can register by august which was the case last year)...
Hiiii puys
I am appearing CFA level 1 in dec.I am planning to do a one year part-time MBA from scmhrd in Finance along with CFA. I came to the conclusion that CFA along with certain MBA degree is required to switch towards finance career..
I am in IT with 3 years of work exp..Kindly provide your views on doing part-time 1 year MBA from scmhrd.. .Will part-time MBA+ CFA will work to change my domain to finance..?

A CFA charter holder in himself is fit for the finance domain and doesn't need any MBA degree..however people do MBA because becoming a charter holder takes like 5 yrs atleast (counting the 3yrs work ex required)...I don't think that clearing level 1 or even level 2 in itself will give you many opportunities since I know many people who with MBA and CFA l-1 qualification did not get the jobs they deserved...
also (my personal opinion..need inputs from other puys) I dont think that MBA part time is that much respected..you can go for a full time MBA and cfa will complement ur studies in MBA should u take finance as ur specialisation

Hi,

I am Ranjeet Kumar and presently working in a Public Sector Bank for last 10 years as a manager. I have nearly 5 years experience in credit appraisal and delivery. Now I want to do CFA. Whether it will benefit me or should I go for one year MBA (Finance).

As the salary in Public Sector Banks is less so I want to change and go for some senior level position where salary is also good.

Please advise me.

Based on ur experience, you can very well apply to private banks for jobs in corporate banking and credit appraisal..

you should go for CFA if u wanna get into equity research and all those roles..I dont think CFA has got anything in common with credit appraisal...
I think MBA finance would help you more as it would give you more diversity in terms of choice of courses..areas in finance you can get into...

however, my personal opinion is that a person like you doesnt need to go for either if you just want to get into a better profile or a better bank..because they wouldnt add much knowledge value to a person having ur amount of knowledge...

hey i am a fresher..wud start my mba pgdm(finance) this year from ifmr Chennai..also wud be writing cfa l1 this December...
i wanted to know that..the placements that happens in 2nd year of mba wud be completly different in terms of job profiles then equity research that we expect after cfa..
so if we really want to use our cfa then i think the college placements wont be suitable for us rit...
so my question was how and where should we apply for specially cfa based job of analyst or in equity research...after that we wud have cleared l2 or l3 of cfa?????????
(is there any chance that company coming for placements in college sees that ur a cfa and recruit u for equity research and not the general finance profile)

can we get some material to start with till i did not register.
Is it available online (in pdf or doc types)?

for ur last question, there are some companies/banks like ICICI which do not recruit for any particular position..based on ur skill set and education they would put in a profile..so a CFA helps there..in many cases tho you might not qualify for a particular profile (like u might not satisfy the minimum work experience criteria) you would be given a chance because ur a CFA l-2 or l-3 aspirant (have seen this happening a lot in my college)..

apart from that for CFA type profiles..start can be made by uploading ur resume with titles like "MBA fin and CFA l-1 passed"....I got an interview call from E&Y; for their analyst profile based on my resume on naukri.com...

also after getting into a regular finance job, it is possible to switch to a better profile inside the company itself...for ex: u get into HSBC when u have cleared L1..but then u clear L2 while working and then you would be considered for the jobs you want to get into...but yeah that would take time...

try searching for schweser notes for L1 on google

Your best shot is on campus and through campus placements.
A CFA won't hurt, especially since you are so focussed on an equity research job.
There are two basic types of ER jobs in India - backend (for x country) and frontend (Indian companies)
Getting through frontend is tough, you can try after couple of years post MBA exp.
To get through on campus, ensure you get really good marks. This is something that will matter a hell of a lot.

CFA will definitely add value, but not at the cost of screwing up your acads in college. Much easier to take a couple of relevant short term certifications that show your interest in the field.

with a BBA degree one would usually get sales profiles in brokerages...however if you manage to get into research kindaa profiles .where you've got to track a company's stocks and stuff like that..then it would be great...because to tell you the truth the front end jobs where ur actually trading etc. are extremely difficult to get into (which would actually help in ur CFA)...

usually what people do is that they start taking CFA exam in first year of MBA and by the time they graduate they have already cleared L2 (or atleast L1) and then it becomes easier to get into decent profiles..because along with ur CFA ur also a MBA...

in the recent past I came across Finitiatives certifications...I went through their demo...found it quite interesting...

then there is the good old CFA..altho that in any case isnt a short term course..lols..

Hello All,

I have 5 yrs of work exp as a s/w engg in automotive domain....

I am more interested in equity research but with my current domain exp its difficult to change the job...
planning to do mba but ppl suggested with 5yr exp for 1yr mba i can get into only IT/Marketing as finance is difficult and need to prove why i want to shift to finanace after this time....

So i thought of doing some good certifications in finance and get the knowledge on it before moving into the finance domain. so could any one suggest me on the certifications i can take to change the domain?
Thanks in advance
aditya
