Need some Opinions on CFA

Hi
I am registering for l-1(June 10).I have tried two credit cards. One card is from Standard Charted Bank and the other is from HDFC bank.
Both cards have the VISA logo on them. But each time i get this error:

Transaction was not successful. Please call your credit card company or try another credit card. (SBL-APS-00802).

HDFC doesn't know anything about this.

Anyone had the same problem? If so,What did you do?Please help.

Hi Realboss

I completely agree with what Vivek has mentioned in his post.
To start of in fin, one needs an MBA.
Engineers do get some profiles in I-banking, but thats more of backend modeling work that they do. And thats also available when they are from a top college like an IIT.
As far as preparation for the course is concerned, Schweser is sufficient for any level, ( I read only those for all the 3)
Please make sure that you go through all the key concepts and the exercises at the back of every reading.
If you do that diligently, then you'll definitely make it

All the best
Akshat

I had to pay INR49700 for registering for L1-June10. r u sure that ur credit card limit exceeds this figure? Also, the cfa website doesn't require ur ccv code.. it asks for ur billing address. make sure that u hav put the ryt billing info. otherwise registering for cfa is a cake walk...

want to see myself as investment banker someday...

actually i want to supplement my International Business profile with a highly reputed tool to make an entry into international investments.

and I'm doing the right thingy...

CFA L-1

PS.. any puys from Delhi??? We can form a study group if someones interested..
cool!! good to hear that you like to help CFA candidates.:thumbsup::thumbsup: hav u cleared all of the 3 CFA levels? Also, how do you find the job prospects for people who hav cleared CFA level 2......

What i have heard from most of my friends is that their's overabundance of level 2 cleared people in the market and it is very difficult to make a switch to finance. Comments are :

yes there is overabundance of L3 candidate right now. Actuallly the industry give recognition to CFA chaterholders.....

Hi Te_Quiro,

I am sure that your Masters in IB might land you up in Investment Banking industry. However it depends on which function you want to get in to?

If getting into an IB is what you are looking for then ur MIB should be sufficient.

However if you are looking at certain specific functions like Research or Quant and thats where you see yourself in the future, then i think that a CFA degree might gel very well.

Hope this addresses your query.

All the very best buddy!!!

I am taking CFA level-I in DEC. 09.

ok i'm sorry and this might be the dumbest question posted on this thread but what is a cfa ?? is it like a course or a competetive exam ?? if it is a course what uni's do i apply to ? and if its a competetive exam where do i enroll and what are the study materials for it ?? i'm from a engineering background(mechanical) and i'll be graduating in 2010.And just like the op i understand what bonds, derivatives, investments, mutual funds mean and i've been working in the stock market a bit with my dad. I want to pursue an mba in finance preferably from any one of the IIM's (dreaming of ahmedabad :P) or XLRI.But reading this thread has me thinking .Is this course/exam that good and what are the job options and the salary bracket for one who has finished it and how long is it and can i pursue an mba after this ?? i know the questions are dumb 😛 and quite a few but any help you provide will be deeply appreciated .Help a boy out will you :P
thanks in advance

if you just go through this thread you will get most of your answers, also search the forum for "CFA" and you will get lots of info, anyways CFA is a correspondence course and has got three levels L1,L2,L3.CFA(aimr) is body which awards CFA charter on the completion of all the three levels and 4years of work exp.it is a qualification which adds to your resume,if you want to switch your career from mech. to finance go for MBA (finance) but if you specifically want to go into research analyst role, you can go for CFA.salary etc depend on many things but be assured if you complete all the levels, compensatation won,t be a problem:

thanks for the quick reply the confessor
yeah i've read through this forum and i kinda think i get the general idea of this course .Now i'm motivated. This exam sounds like it could help my mba(fin) out a lot :D.It has me fully fired up.Now all thats left to do is research and then start studying in a couple of months.Oh and btw if any of you guys could post some of the study books i'd appreciate it (not the stallas or schweiser one) just the generaly recommended textbooks or whatever. and if there are any chennaites preparing for this course lemme know .I'm gonna get right to it and hopefully i can do it by dec 2010 right when i graduate :D.I hope i can do it considering that i don't have any fin background and all .
thanks in advance
p.s i love this forum (just found out about it)

Currently CFA(AIMR) is embroiled in court case with ICFAI over the use of the term CFA

The court periodically hears the case n upon request by CFA(AIMR) allows it to conduct exam at Mumbai

so rest assured June'10 exams too will be held at Mumbai...the exam centre list at site currently doesn shows Mumbai as test centre because currently authorities havnt got requisite permission from court . In all likelihood they will be granted such permission during next hearing .Meanwhile most indian students fill kathmandu as test centre as its near n costs less

Icfai carries value only to the domestic sector financial firms whereas cfa(aimr) is an intrnational recognised global financial degree . Its termed as Gold Standard amongst financial exams

Coz they require US bachelor degree or equivalent. i m not able to find whether my degree is sufficent. so ani frm B.com who is pursuing CFA plz plz plz tell me whether i am eligible or not.

Well you are a BCom Grad along with MBA.. you are definetly eligible for CFA.. still if you have a doubt you can write to them and get your doubt clarified..

Create you account on CFA website and after logging in you would get the option of raising your query.. hope that helps..

Thanx. Actually i have already an email to them 2 days back n waiting for the reply. One more thing i want to ask u all especially who are in practice is cfa got good scope in india too.

Hi
sorry for replying late, was busy with college work...
coming back to your question abt ethics, I guess, the only way is to practice as many questions as possible. U should try to get a good grasp on the standards of professional conduct and all the clauses in it. Try to memorise the exceptions to these standards. All this has been given very well in the main course book, which is why I wud recommend ethics to be read from the course material sent by the CFA institute.
As far as derivatives are concerned, dont leave anything, as it forms the fundamentals for Level 2 and Level 3 exams.
The question bank worked for me every time,

best of luck for ur preparations
