Hi
The site clearly specifies that every level requires arnd 250 hours of work. I'll try to put things in perspective over here for u and other CFA Level 1 aspirants as well.
The post is arranged as follows. Try to follow the topics in the sequence given:
Topic Time required
1. Quants: Session 2 & 3 : 2 days concentrated study: 15 hours to master

2. Economics: Session 4, 5 and 6 : 40 hours. (6 days) as the concepts learnt here will go a long way in the CFA program.

3. FSA : Sessions 7 to 10 : 60 hours: (10 days) : very very important topic

4. Corp fin : Session 11 : 1 day

5. Equity investments analysis : session 13 and 14: 3 days, important

6. Derivatives analysis: session 17 : 3 days, very very important

7. Fixed-income : session 15, 16: 3 days, try to grasp the various risks involved and the concept of duration and yield curve.

8. portfolio management : session 12, one day

9. Alternative investments: session 18, 2 days

Try to revise your course twice before may. one can do your course once in one month. so finish your course by 20th march the first time around and by april end the second time.

starting May , just mug up the ethics portion and solve as many papers as possible.

I did it this way and cleared the exam. It sounds very comprehensive but trust me, its possible.

I did with a job, and had no background of fin as such.

Hope this is useful

Cheers

Hope all of u have also started opening ur books, for the june 09 exam.
Level III is very different from the earlier levels. It involves a lot of theory.

Lets see how it goes.

Hi

Well, taking both the exams together can be tricky. I wont pass any judgements as everyone one of us has his/her own caliber.

I'll just want u to ask urself the right questions and the answers will be there in front of u:

1. Wat is more important to u, MBA or CFA.
2. Are u willing to take the risk of not qualifying in this years CAT?
3. CFA program is a costly proposition, and any laxity can rob u of a big amt. Are u willing to risk that?

If i wud have been in ur place, i wud have taken CAT more seriously, cause for me, an IIM was more important. Secondly, I cud have easily taken CFA during my MBA.
Hope this provides some pointers.

Cheers

Hey Akshat

Just enrolled for Level II. Could u provide some pointers to prepare for Level II??? How different is it from Level I as in the amount of effort required on proportionate basis???

Hi,

The syllabus is same for June and December 09 exams.. once you register for the exam you would be getting books from the institute... so if you are talking about CFA books the syllabus would remain same with in the year.. CFA institute changes the books from year to year.. for 08 they had given one set of books and for 09 they have given new books with new changes incorporated.. but majority remains the same...

so you have registered for which month?

Hi Ankit

Level 2 is definitely much more tricky. This is so , becuase of the question sets. U will have 10 sets of 6 questions in each exam.
if u get one set wrong, u basically screw up 6 questions.

I wud suggest u start with the FSA part because it is the most important in this level. Try to spend as much time mastering the concepts in FSA.
The quant concepts are relatively simple, eco is also not tough. Look carefully at the valuation of equity and duration concepts for equity and fixed-income carefully.
Option pricing and route independent and dependent pricing models are important.
The ethics portion becomes tougher, as u have to read caselets. One caselet has 6 questions to answer. So work on the reading speed.
In my case, i had left alternative investments completely and i saw one whole caselet in front of me. I was shit scared but somehow managed to scrape thru.
Be thorough and spend at least 200 hours. I had my mba interviews, as well as an international paper presentation becuase of which i cud give in only 120 hours.
Prepare well

cheers
Akshat
