Therainmaker, I guess it depends then on who you are and what you are doing/done. Like almustafa said he is an engineer and he discussed the stock market and made it without even mentioning the creative stuff he's done, so it does boil down to being yourself in the interview room but I suppose also there are other factors involved too.
I discovered and so will you if you go through the other thread (Class of 2005-2007), you'll discover that most of the guys are quite interesting ppl, with various eclectic interests and this is something substantiated to me even by some seniors I spoke to...
yeah thts true....about my intrests...I told them I love reading Philosophy....my favourite author being Kahlil Gibran and then they asked me what I liked about his writings...I answeerd pretty well I think.....also to make my interview a lil longer I discussed the MET with hem and pointed out some flawed questions...mebbe tht helped too...btw I am not through yet.....just waitlisted 😞

Guyts when i read about your interviews i don't find it a lot different from mine. Its was just this silly mistake that i made...i think....They asked me that since you know so much abt advtsing.Do you have any role models. And i blatantly told them "no,i think each of the successful campaign had the contribution from a whole team, and its just that creative directors or who ever take the credit. For every i dea that they are being given credit...i know originated in some one elses minds. They were clever to let it go ahead. And they are doing it,because that was what they had faced.Means that what their ideas were their seniors took credit. So now its their time".looks like this was the main reason...and don't contest me on what i said abt plaigiarism because i have seen it myself plus my friends are there in agencies who can dish out testimonies...... why i was not selected.Till that time every thing had been a cake walk.....READING TOO MUCH CORRUPTS MIND....SOMETIMES I REALLY THINK THAT IGNORANCE IS BLISS.........

Hey, I don't know about your background but I'm going to assume based on the statement they made that you were in Advertising / PR / Direct Marketing / Media?

OK my friend, by way of a friendly argument, I will contest what you said. I am assuming from above that you have a background in the industry in which case it surprises me all the more that you're making a statement like this. Let me tell you that while plagiarism does exist, so does pilfering of ideas, shamelessly so at times, it is MOST DEFINITELY WRONG to assume that Creative Directors take undue credit most of the time.
Understand this, if that were the case, Piyush Pandey wouldn't be where he is today (National Creative Director and Chairman, Ogilvy & Mather India). He would never have risen from his humble beginnings and become the giant that he is today. He would never have given the world a "Dum Lagaa Ke Haishaa" (Fevicol) or the landmark Cadbury's Dairy Milk "Girl running onto the cricket pitch" (Kya Swaad Hai Zindagi Mein).
You'd be surprised to the extent which young talent is nurtured in agencies, not only are they protected, they are also given every opportunity to grow and rise through ideas they come up with. The creative team working on the Hutch series of ads is quite young and who can deny the brilliance of the Hutch ads...
Pilfering and misrepresentation of ideas exists in EVERY industry. It's upto you, the originator of the idea to safeguard and yes, it is possible to do so, if you play it the right way...
dear knight, don't get emotional about it.Since you talked about piyush pandey and the ads you talked about.Just please find out that what was the age at which he made these ads...i promise you that you will be surpride....then again find out when he joined o&M...even; more surprises....You see its just like jesus christ. No One knows what he was doing for 32 years of his life and then he became god.
All i am saying is that he created good ads...chances are you don't know them because it was some one else who was winning the awards.Do you honestly think that since he is the creative director he has to think of the ideas....no knight...thats teamwork...Brainstorming.After a brain storming session if you come up with an idea do you say its yours?
i belive some bloke musta have let it out at the watercooler that boy fevicol would surely do campaigns like this...and it became...what it was today....
and one last thing...piyush pandey..i think...arrived at the scene with "CHAL MERI LUNA"...thing

hi dost i am no authority but there is one thing that i follow religiously in inteviews never ever say something that has a negative overtone what they will feel is that this guy is saying something right now abt something that he hasnt actually witnessed ....tommorrow he will be in the industry and will keep talking negative things abt the insti or the company let me tell u, u r not wrong per se what u r stating is right however they want to know the positives why stress on negatives and keep going on abt it and chill ....u have nt commited a crime but definitely if u improve upon it ,it ll help u go a long way rest everything else rests on ur potential and brilliance if u r good no one can stop u from making it big best of luck nikhil
dost, point taken.Thats one thing i too have realized.I am the person to whom its always a half empty glass.Plus rite now i am really in deflated state.......so....well.....er....just thanx and sorry.:)
In fact this is todays secon....this morning itself my dad sent me this forward....i hope you like it.
Two Wolves One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between 2 "wolves" inside us all.
One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.
The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith."
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: "Which wolf wins?"
The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

Hey Rainmaker
Say a BIG THANKS to your dad from me... and to you also, for posting it here... and let me get back to feeing the other wolf...

No, buddy, not getting emotional about it...merely differed with your point of view.
Yes, I am aware of Piyush Pandey's background. I believe he joined OB&M; in 1984 (and has been with them ever since) as a Client Servicing executive. I've heard that prior to that he was a tea taster.
He worked on the Fevicol account at the time and in fact, wrote a lot of the lines for the brand which earned client approval, so he was hired as a copywriter at OB&M.;
From there, he worked his way up the ladder. There is no mystery behind his meteoric rise - it is an example of how an individual can rise above himself and excel so long as he is passionate and dedicated, I say this, because my father happens to know him very well.
While I personally do not consider him to be God, he is definitely an all-time great. At his level, he STILL is actively involved in creating advertisements and is STILL responsible for having created some great ads on Television today - the Titan ad (Aamir Khan), The VIP Frenchex ad (Lingerie flying), etc. , etc.
I understood ur point.Piyush pandey indeed worked as you said. But he joined O&M; in 1982.Worked on LUNA in 1988.That was his first campaign that landed on his lap because(my memory eludes me but i think the boss was away, head hunted or sick or something). Then came cadbury. this was the turning point because that ad won him many awards.then kelvinator, onida, times of india, complan, fevicol, grasim, amaron etc. happened(not in chronological order). He himself says that he(we) would not have been here had ranjan kapoor in 92 hadn't said that we will go by creative excellence.... Plus whatever i am saying...he has said it himself(though not in such strong terms )
"First, let me say that this statement is a wonderful, safe device to go and tell clients and people that, 'Unke paas kya hai, bas ek Piyush Pandey hai.' I have said so before too, if I had to do all this work that you see, I must be Superman. The kind of work that Sagar (Mahabaleshwar) and Pushpy (Pushpinder Singh) have been doing this year I don't even see the Orange work; two youngsters (Mahesh V. and Rajiv Rao) sitting up there do everything on Orange. What Vidur (Vohra) and Mac (Manmohan Anchan) did for Post-its, I saw after it was produced. Prasoon (Joshi) did a lot of the work from O&M; while he was here. 'Goli ke hamjoli' was Prasoon's work. All the work on Yahoo! has been done by Abhijit (Awasthi). Then, in Delhi, there are Saumya (Sen) and (V.) Sunil who have done some great work. So, like I said, 'O&M; is Piyush' is a good party line to demean somebody else. But I say tumhaare paas to woh ek Piyush bhi nahin hai? (Laughs.).
I am proud to say that we at O&M; have some very, very good people, who have done work that I admit I wish I had done.
And one thing If this is a one-man show, how come other agencies are hiring my able colleagues as creative directors, national creative directors and business managers? They must be pretty good, kyon? (Smiles.)" http://www.agencyfaqs.com/news/interviews/data/102.html
NEVER ONCE did I say that O&M; was a one-man show, I am fully aware of what O&M;'s creative people are capable of...
I began this discussion with you, which I still maintain is a friendly one, taking the stand that while plagiarism and pilfering is very rampant, it DOES NOT MEAN that true talent will not find a way, HENCE I went on to mention that if what you did say were true in most cases that someone like Piyush Pandey would not have risen, his ideas would have been plagiarised and pilfered by others (maybe they were too) and he would never have reached where he is today...
This be my first post. I am sitting for cat05, so visiting threads of some bschools i wanna apply
Been following some chat on this thread - lots of talk on results and the pandey bros. I wanna know 1 thing - is there ANYMica Alumni who has made it to top in ad world? Like Rama Bijapurkar from IIM-A and Jagdeep Kapur from JBIMS and Prasun Joshi from IMT. I dont know of any and i think anyone wanna take admission at Mica must ponder on this.
Hi people, sorry to beak all the charged discussion, but what i need to know is this: now that the final list is coming out on the 22nd (thhis is wot i was told. plz correct me if m wrong), all the people on the waitlist, if u do not make it n do not have any other decent back up too, how many are wanting to give MICA another shot next year and go through the entire grind once more? well, as u can guess, i m one of the people in this category, waitlisted on MICA n forget decent or indecent, i have no backup at all!!!! neways, all the gyaani n not so gyaani people plz lemme know wot ur take is on this till then, stay cool n keep rockin cheers Sonu
1) MICA is not just about advertising. Please go through other posts on this forum as also the MICA website at www.mica-india.net
2) Both the B-School alumni you have mentioned are from institutes set up in the 60s. MICA alumni have achieved a lot in its short 11 year history. It takes longer than that to make a Bijapurkar or Kapoor.
3) Are you planning to apply to only those institutes that have alumni who find mention in the media? Wonder when that became a selection criterion.
4) You are right when you say that anyone applying to MICA must ponder about it.Please do.

Gogol.
Facts for you to ponder over:
>> The first batch of PGPCM from MICA passed out in 1996. Rama Bijapurkar is Batch of 1977 at IIMA Jagdeep Kapoor is a 1983 passout and set up Samsika in 1994.
>> The creatives in an agency tend to grab much more limelight than the servicing/planning folks.
>> We have alumni who've been doing extremely well:
@ Arvind Krishnamoorthy (Batch of 2000) who is Regional Sales Producer for Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and Indonesia with Yahoo. He led his team to win both an Abby and an Emvie for Pepsi Online campaigns
@ Basant Rathore (Batch of 1996) who is GM Brand Development for Dainik Jargran - India's most read newspaper in any language.
@ Kaustuv Ghosh (Batch of 1996) who handles innovation & strategy for NDTV
@ Kartik Kumar & Sunil Vishnu who run Chennai's popular theatre group Evam
For a young insti... you could definitely say MICA is on its way to getting there. Plus it's not an "ad school" ... 😉 ... we're into "marketing communications"

man, that last point is quite a diatribe.
may I know WHAT the Mica alumni achieved in last 11 yrs? Fact stays u dont know, nor do many, who all did well enough after passing from Mica. And u a Mica student!
what I meant to say in previous post is that for an institute regarded at par with the best bschools of the country there dont seem to be many high-flier alumni.
and does it really take loooong to make a name if u got "stuff". prasun joshi passed imt ghaziabad in mid-nintys, right? Gogol.

Please don't walk into thread just like that and start commenting - not just about an insti, but about its students. You could do your research before you question people who know a lot more about the place than you do. There has been a lot of discussion about MICAns in industry on various other MICA threads on pagalguy. Do find ur way around before, instead of making uniformed comments.
