when I said I wanna get a feel of the course I meant the real stuff....material we'd be studying during the course not get a feel of the ad industry....
also when you say we dont hafta spend on books does that mean absolutely none....not even Kotler et al
I saw 'Saw' 😃 today...really cool movie get your hands on it if you can....
To experience the beauty of advertising mustafa...try to visit an ad agency...to just observe the organised chaos with which this industry works...to see an idea that you thought of, being transformed into a communication to millions of people....to wonder at the potential of a thought that crossed your mind...and to feel pride in owning a piece of work....
Much like how an artist thinks about his art i must say....
To look at the precision of delivering communication to the right customer in the right place at the right time...and then driving that communication to achieve sales......Thats what great advertising is made of...
And i believe that advertising is something that you need to experience and feel.....like sitting in a cab on your way to college and analysing the different communications you are being exposed to...and figuring out the effectiveness of each...and the thought behind each.
Advertising surrounds you...you do not need a book really to experience the magic of advertising.......
Hope i was able to make you experience even an iota of the passion that tranforms itself into adrenaline and drives this industry that we all love...
Kari...
p.s. sorry if it sounded too much like a sermon...but advertising is my religion~

Hi Al Mustafa and others...
For courses beyond Kotler, there are no standard text books. You get reading material compiled from various sources by faculty.
As for creative side of advertising, the Crafting Creative Course trains you to be ideators and helps you to create ads both print and AV and thus prepare your portfolio.

aftersale service is the most imp factor...you are gonna need onsite service in some Godforsaken village in Gujarat........i dont think acer gives the best aftersale service.....i guess the best deal would be the one mica gets us or if you can get a laptop from abroad.....
Hey Peepal,
As we are inching closer to THE DAY, it would make enough sense to know what we all are doing to get a bite of the dough. I have taken up an assignment with an Integrated Communications firm and have been working my fingers to the bones on above-the-line as well as below-the-line activities. The company that I work for is DesignEFX- started by two guys who branched out of O&M; in 2000 with some 10yrs exp.
I am sure there are a lot of peepal involved with interesting assignments......to name a few pals like Kari, Shru ........ each one of u pls post the company name, U R job profile, accounts u are handling et al.
Hey Shru,
What Al mustafa says is right ......and more so when Acer has no ace in the hole........so be very wary while selecting the model.
Godspeed.

Hi everyone,
The ACER mentioned is offering value FOR IT'S PRICE..The Sempron is like the Celeron, but from AMD's stable..It perorms well and a 2800+ spec is good..The remaining features complete the picture to your satisfaction. Once again, very few of ACER's components are high-end but this deal (if there isn't a catch) is 30K vasool (not beyond it). The ACER travelmate series also offers lotsa brilliant features but is a wallet-pincher at 50K.. Better to fork out 6K more and go in for an IBM..(yup, R51 available for 56K from a dealer I contacted here in Mumbai).
Al Mustafa is right about service in A'bad being a crucial factor, but all those who have purchased a branded laptop would have faced a situation where laptops have been repaired by the under the warranty period but they could keep it in their possession for 3 weeks to a month. That's a regular thing with all mega brands..Dell is not known for great post sales support here n IBM..well..takes a while sorting stuff out.
So I suggest if the price difference is massive (or if someones is hauling in some imported maal), a laptop can be picked ASAP or else it wouldn't be a bad idea to wait for MICA's offering to spring up.
And Karishma..Although your post merits an independent reply..But here goes..Way to Go..Done away with any grievance that may have persisted on this forum coz of the sabbatical u took from posting..And all the best !!

Hi Rainmaker,
Why don't you just mail to any of these programs you are interested in, stating your MICA PGPCM form number. Mark a CC to [email protected]
See what they say. Since they have approached all 5500 (hopefully, minus hte ones who have got thru or WLed for PGPCM) you may not be expected to fill the form - or atleast pay the application fees again.

"WHAT ARE THEY LOOKING FOR,WHAT ARE THE MAGIC WORDS/SENTENSES THEY WANT TO HEAR FROM ME?"
from my experience and based on my judgement I think they really dont like being overwhelmed with Advertising gyan......these guys are the Gods in this field and nothing you say ....even if you are quoting right out of Kotler.....can be good enough for them....instead just try bringing out the basic qualities in you which will help you grow in the field.....
btw I am an electronics engineer ...in my interview I discussed the stock market and the budget with them... had a lot of creative stuff to show for myself....ads posters et al but since they dint ask me I dint bother to bring it up......
Hey peepal,
Well, just to make the profile and work-ex part more exciting.......thought I will put forth a question on portfolio as well. Any fellas out there ........started building a portfolio ?...........we will keep the critic and analysis session of the portfolio at MICA.
Godspeed.
.
"WHAT ARE THEY LOOKING FOR,WHAT ARE THE MAGIC WORDS/SENTENSES THEY WANT TO HEAR FROM ME?"
Hey,
Nothing of that sort ........just bring out your true self and be very discreet........they don't want to hear magic words or argots cos they are submerged in them for their lives.
They want to know whether or not you can fit into their system. Be very consistent in what you say .....do not blow hot and cold. And needless to say, be well informed on the scope of the course.
Have a framework in your mind.....what to say, what not, How to relate one thing to another....analogies (Helps!), and do it consciously.
Godspeed.
Long time since I posted here.My internship takes up most of my life.Nice to see so much activity on the forum.
Heres some advice on many of the FAQs on this forum
1. Laptops:
Go in for the MICA deal. After sales service really matters. Toshibha guys service on very short notice.
A batchmate who has a Dell had a major glitch on the machine. The closest dealer was tucked far away from Shela. It was a nightmare getting assignments done for a whole term.
2. Preparatory reading:
All subjects have either text books or reading material prescribed for each term. Reading material is usually compiled from text books, magazines, case study booklets and the WWW.
Do not buy any books for the course. Unless you already have some texts on basics of marketing or Dilbert that youd like to bring along for reference don't bother.
In addition to websites that were mentioned by the Mican you could also have a look at:
1. Marketing Management-Philip Kotler
2. Advertising Management-Myers and Batra
3. Consumer Behaviour-Schiffman and Kanuk
5. Any text on basic Macroeconomics
Do not buy these books. A breezy read will do.
Also read up on Brands,Media planning and buying,Market Research and Advertising on Brand Equity, www.blonnet.com, www.ephrononmedia.com. Get a feel for how IMC works in the real world. Practical knowledge will really help you crack the course.
Some acad-related problems you might face:
- Economics- you will have this in term 1. Its a real toughie. Watch out.
- Marketingknow your basics, the course can get very theoretical
Short-term courses:
These include the Crafting Creative Communications (CCC), PGP in Broadcasting Management( BRM) PGP in Event Management (PREM) and PGP in Retail Communications (PGP-RCM).
As a thumb rule ,MICA sends out mailers on admission to these courses to all those who have applied to the PGP .
People in these courses generally have work-ex and treat them as added qualifications. Pay packages vary from 1.5 - 4 lacs p.a depending on work-ex and company.
You will see an entirely different set of profiles being offered to PGP graduates as versus the short-term chappies.
The CCC placements are not much to write home about. Most people pitch for themselves. However, MICAs first foreign offers came from Singapore and Dubai for students in this course. Also, its a 6 month course. We have already interacted with 3 batches of CCC students.
Thats all for now. Hope to write in again soon.Drop me a PM if you need more info.
All the best.

almustafa Saysfrom my experience and based on my judgement I think they really dont like being overwhelmed with Advertising gyan......these guys are the Gods in this field and nothing you say ....even if you are quoting right out of Kotler......
I beg to differ, my PI was based completely on my advertising work ex.
I had mentioned that at rmg david I was handling an account all by myself into my 1st month at a trainee, I guess they found that a little tough to swallow and proceeded to ask what I had done on the account I was handling (IMAX Adlabs) and the other account I was assisting on (Cox & Kings) and I didn't disappoint them - went on and on about positioning exercises I had conducted, Brand audits, findings and recommendations of the positioning exercise, why do I think this multiplex is more successful than that multiplex and so on...
Therainmaker, I guess it depends then on who you are and what you are doing/done. Like almustafa said he is an engineer and he discussed the stock market and made it without even mentioning the creative stuff he's done, so it does boil down to being yourself in the interview room but I suppose also there are other factors involved too.
I discovered and so will you if you go through the other thread (Class of 2005-2007), you'll discover that most of the guys are quite interesting ppl, with various eclectic interests and this is something substantiated to me even by some seniors I spoke to...
