I am a little disheartened by the way this whole admission process has been handled,too. :huh:

And although it seemed like you weren't interested anyway...what happened to your XIMB results?

Hope u werent one of the ppl affected by the infamous selected->waitlisted fiasco.
I didn't make it to XIMB - I had a pretty low XAT score, and my interview was only 5 mins.....
But u're right, I really wasn't very concerned about it once I had made it thru to MICA.

Hey can anyone tell me some good deals on laptops in india? i have a sis abroad but i dont think she is planning to come anytime soon.. so i guess i have to buy one from delhi itself.. so can any delhites throw some light on this matter...

I did check with my bro in Jersey regarding laptops since he is travelling to India in May. He said he will have to pay duty which thereof would be equal to the sticker price in India. Will check once again and keep u guys posted.

There is a cheaper source............If you guys have an acquaintance in DELL/IBM/ HP ........depending on the level of employment, these companies offer price-offs.

A senior employee is entitled to approx 30% price-off. Check it out!!!!!

As far as i know.. there is no custom duty on laptops anymore.. anyone can get one for personal use..i know this cuz my cousin did the same just a few days back..
but thnx for the tip on price offs.. now i gotta dig up contacts.. 😃

Hey pa-gal.. u shud rename urself know-all-gal 😃 i had sent the dd on friday ie 8th from dtdc.. and i have a confirmed selection but then i guess the dd shud get there in time.. so shud i still send them a confirmation mail or something..
And i m guessing the number of engineers this time will def be higher than 12.. we have already seen some 7-8 on this thread itself..
by the way if anyone is planning to see a movie called paranoia 1.0 then i wud strongly advise u against it.. its out there man.. i dint understand anything in that movie..

Thanks for the compliment :whatthat: . It helps to send an e mail confirmation that you are interested and will be sending the DD soon. What's the harm??

Normally what happens in many insti is that just like all those with confirmed admissions are treated equally (No merit list there) even all on wait-list have an equal chance. Then it is up to the person on the waitlist to take a call and confirm his/her interest by paying the fees. Suppose all on the confirmed list fill up the seats, then waitlisted guys anyways get their fees back. I guess that must be the reason for MICA saying "you have 99% chance of getting in."

And for all the gyan given, I still agree that the admissions process should atleast be more sympathetic and provide clear answers to prospective and some of them cluess (Chillllllll!) students.

How sure are u regarding no duty on laptops? Cos my bro is saying there is certain $ limit on the gadgets that u carry. And u are supposed to declare all the gadgets at the port of entry.

Anyone can get for personal use, but it is registered at the port of entry and they will have to carry the same while returning. So the question here is ........is your cousin back in US with the laptop or has he given it to someone here in India. Or has your cousin stayed back along with the lappy?

Please get this thingie confirmed ASAP.

Now the deal is that my cousin had gone to US and got back one laptop for his personal use(he resides in india only) and there was no duty.. now if ur bro is getting back many things then i dont know..but one gadget is allowed duty free.. thats what i know.. ofcourse the best thing to do is talk to someone in customs..

and that question by almustafa makes alot of sense.. i too wud like to know if any atms are around and accordingly open an account.. but since its in the outskirts i m a little skeptical if any atms are around..

Hey Almustafa.

Considering the fact that MICA has a tie-up with HDFC to offer education loans to their students, a HDFC ATM machine at MICA is something that we can speculate. If otherwise, I don't think you would possibly find another ATM at a place as remote as Shela. In that case u will end up travelling to the city where most banks would have their ATMs. But this is something even I was contemplating for long now......thanks for raising this. It would be better if someone can find this out from inside sources.

Thanks for that. I am gonna have to to speak to some airport/customs authority on the lappy thing cos my bro is not coming for good. So in that case it's imperative to find out whether or not there is any duty, any limit so on .....

I happen to know Smirnoffication, so I asked him about the whole bank and ATM thingy. He told me that while there is no HDFC Bank on campus, there is one nearby (can't remember the exact distance away from campus) and typically when we are into our first week at MICA, the HDFC representatives will come to campus and ask if we want to open savings accounts with them and will help complete formalities for us, debit cards, et al. (I confirmed this too, no letter of introduction or anything of the sort is required as is usually the standard practice for opening accounts)

Additional Information: I also found that those seeking to purchase Reliance cell phone connections and instruments (as I intend to) can do so at a Reliance Web World nearby.

Could any of the seniors help us out with the what the holiday system is like. (What holidays does the institute give whether in the form of term breaks/semester breaks, are we entitled to take any holidays - if so, how many?)

Hey guys,

HDFC bank comes on campus every week (Once a week), you can open your account there. No need for intro etc. The nearest HDFC bank and ATM are about 7km, in a place called Bopal. Also a UTI bank ATM in Bopal.

Reliance connection is not all that good. But the Cell phone guys are smart. The day you land up they will line up with their pre-paid cards - on campus.

MICA has trimister system. You will get a week to 10 days off in end Sept up to first week October. Again in end December, till first week of Jan. From March end - then it depends when your company wants you to join for Summers...

I m waitlisted in MICA. i had a confirmed admission at SIBM-CM. i cancelled it. Currently me in mid air. neither MICA nor SIBM.
n ya about Pillai acting silly, i agree totally. The way things look right now, there is pretty much nothing to do but wait till 21/22 april when MICA declares their final list.

I am no gyani as pa-gal is but happen to be from Ahmedabad and have been to the Mica campus many times...YOU WILL MOST CERTAINLY NEED VEHICLES AT MICA...how else will u get out of Shela for projects and stuff? The only other transportation available are six-seater autorickshaws that will have to be called up from Bopal.

Again, insiders at Mica or our homegrown genius pa-gal should know better...

Hey there,

VipinVN has shed good gyan. He's right - quite a bit. Shela - where MICA is loacted is about 7 km from this town called Bopal where you get most stuff - including ATMs, HDFC bank. Hence, good to have bikes. You are most certainly allowed to keep bikes - and don't forget to get a helmet.

The other alternative is to get an auto (A'bad autos are pathetic, very few RE), from Shela. Some smart auto and 'tuktuk' (Six seater) wallahs carry cell phone. So give them a buzz, they will take you where you want to go, pick you up at a specific time and get back.

And well, since I have it, I flaunt it - gyan, that is. So any comment on that is taken in a stride. Everyone is welcome o share info they have. I have no IPR on MICA:)
